If the Boström scandal has a villainous hero, it just might be Swedens ambassador to Tel Aviv. Elisabet Borsiin Bonnier has distanced herself from Donald Boström’s IDF-steals-organs-and-sells-them-story in Aftonbladet through a letter on the Swedish embassy’s website.
“The article in the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet is as shocking and terrible for us Swedes as it is for Israeli citizens. We share the shock which is being expressed by spokesmen for the Israeli government, mass media and public. The Swedish embassy cannot do anything else bu clearly distance itself from the article. Just as in Israel there is a free press in Sweden. Freedom of the press and freedom of expression are however freedoms which carry with them a certain responsiblity. That responsiblity falls upon the shoulders of the editor-in-chief of every newspaper.
One of the entertaining aspects surrounding this entire affair is how the very same people who chastised the artist behind the Muhammed-caricatures now are the defenders of Donald Boström. So freedom of expression is bad if it increases the possibility of someone setting of bombs in your country, but it there is no bomb-threat then freedom of expression is bad. The good ambassador of Sweden was wrong to do what she did, but the benefits do appear to outweigh the drawbacks in a society where criticism of Israel has become virtuous in itself.
The photo above, the ambassador’s letter and the gnist of this post has been lifted from Document.no, Norway’s finest dissident blog.
