NTNU: “Ashamed of being Norwegian…”

Decent Norwegians find the “boycott Israel” movement baffling. Constructive criticism? Sure. Help and assist? Certainly, to the extent that we can. Sympathize with both sides? Of course. But to boycott, of all countries, precisely Israel? To many, it just does not make a lot of sense. Then again, most of us have not been attending NTNU’s seminar series on Israel.

Comments on NTNU rektor Torbjørn Digernes blog have now reached a full fifty. Some are in support of the rektor, the seminar he endorses, and the proposal to boycott Israel which will be discussed at the upcoming board meeting on November 12th. Most are not. Here is an excerpt from the latest comment:

I can’t help feeling somewhat ashamed being a Norwegian. Of all the countries in the world behaving not ”decently” it is not easy to understand why NTNU should go for boycotting Israel early next month. There should be lot af countries more suitable than Israel. E.g China, North Korea, Sudan. Just to name a few. How many democracies do we have in the Middle East, except Israel? Not too many.
