JP: Norway drops Israel war crimes lawsuit

Nobody who enters into a war may leave it unscathed and Afghanistan might be bringing this home to us Norwegians. The Jerusalem Post reports that Norway drops Israel war crimes lawsuit.

Unauthorized excerpt from the article:

Prosecutors have dismissed a complaint filed by a group of Norwegian lawyers accusing Israeli leaders of war crimes over its incursion into Gaza last winter.

Chief prosecutor Siri Frigaard said Friday she is dismissing the complaint, which was lodged on April 22, because “there is no good reason” for Norwegian authorities to investigate further.

The lawyers filed the motion under Norway’s universal jurisdiction law.

Dropping the lawsuit may very well be a wise move. Our own boys are in the thick of it in Afghanistan and we can be sure of one thing only – our enemies will hit us with everything they have got.

Frigaard said Norway “must show great care” when deciding whether to investigate alleged war crimes committed by individuals with no connection to Norway. A 2008 law allows foreigners to face charges in Norway for war crimes committed anywhere in the world.

This may very well prove to be a wise move by Norway. We are tangled up in a war ourselves, in Afghanistan, and we can be sure of only one thing – our enemies will hurt us every way they can. Norway must never surrender her soldiers to foreign courts, not for doing what we sent them out to do. If Norwegian soldiers violate the law, they must be tried before a Norwegian jury. Our politicians must make it understood that other countries must show great care indeed, before bringing charges against our lads.

Coincidentally, Aftenposten editor Harald Stanghelle has told the population that the Jerusalem Post is run by right-wing extremists and has no credibility left to it. As opposed to Aftenposten of course, which has yet to report on the NTNU circus which has been open for months now.

Mr.Stanghelle, he will have us believe, will not be bullied into anything.
