Norway is in so many ways a beautiful country. Norwegian society and culture has so much going for it. But we Norwegians are no more perfect than anyone else, and we cannot blame Israel for this and we cannot blame the Israel-lobby. Not for faults which are our own. Just like the problems of Egypt are the problems of Egypt, the problems in Norwegians society are the product of the Norwegians people. We need to deal with it ourselves and foreigners can not do it for us. The sooner we come to terms with this, the better.
Here is a comment from a concerned NTNU student. This student is neither jewish nor israeli, nor particularly interested in Israel as such. For this student it is merely a matter of self-interest as well as principle – why Israel? Why not Sudan or North Korea or Russia? As the student points out in an e-mail, the Middle East debate is strangely sensitive in Norway and it is best “not to rock the boat”.
Hi, I am a student at NTNU, and I am seriously concerned about this. I’ve seen the posters announcing the lectures and calling for a boycott.
Being myself totally opposed to a boycott as a matter of principle, I furthermore find myself in a situation that my career as a researcher in political science may be damaged because of this. In case the boycott is approved, the credibility of my degree, once I get it, will be severely damaged.
I put myself in other people’s position: If I were to chose participants for a conference, would I pick one coming from a university that officially promotes discrimination of schollars regardless of their intellectual merit???
I’m praying that the board has some sense and rejects this. Otherwise I should reconsider my plans.
