Aftenposten: Jew-hatred runs deep

Elsbeth Wessel's book on Jews in Austria

Aftenposten today runs a full-page op-ed by Jahn Otto Johansen, a well known Norwegian writer, on European Jew-hatred. He points out that an array of new surveys show that anti-Semitism is increasing throughout Europe, points out that Austria has an especially sordid history in this respect, and reviews Elsbeth Wessel’s new book The Jews of Austria – integrated and outcast, which Mr.Johansen finds highly valuable.

Strangely Mr.Johansen makes no mention of anti-Semitism in Norway.  The University College of Oslo is in the habit of inviting guest speakers who are openly anti-Semitic, and one would have thought that this would merit a mention in a full-page article on contemporary anti-Semitism. Hopefully, Jahn Otto Johansen has another op-ed up his sleeve on exactly this aspect.

Aftenposten

Aftenposten has on several occasions lately proved that they are taking anti-Semitism seriously, giving attention to both Eirik Eiglad’s excellent book “The anti-Jewish riots in Oslo” and the grotesque situation in Malmö, Sweden. Even so, critics say, Aftenposten is being very sluggish, lagging behind blogs by as much as entire months. There is some truth to this, yet at the end of the day Aftenposten is publishing stories which other newspapers prefer to ignore.

Hello, I am from Poland. I work and live in Norway since June 2008. I am not Jew. But I am Shabbat keeper Christian. Master in Lutheran Theology. Bachelor of Social Work. Just recently I was invited for Peace for Israel meeting in Oslo. It was a meeting with the Secretary of the Israel Embassy here in Oslo. I was surprised to get to know what is going on here in Norway.
The country which is build on the Protestant Reformation. Which carry throughout the ages the Christian true principles is slowly turning in to the Islamic Republic of Norway. It is amazing. I am world traveler. I have been so far in 61 countries of the world. I was traveling through Arabic, Islamic countries. Over there is no way that Christians or Jews could function. Even the local people if they would like to become Christians or Jews or other denomination members, they will be killed because of changing religion. I am amazed that the Norwegians are so naive believing the Palestinian, Muslim, Islamic people only. If Norway want to be a peace maker in Middle East should seat by the table with the Israel and Palestinian People together. The Norwegians should not listen only one side. There is punishment coming on Norway. Just recently we had example by the Norwegian parliament where the group of Muslim, Islamic demonstration was threatening Norway. Telling that they will do what happened in New York City with World Trade Center. I believe that Norway should keep friendship and helping the believers of true God not of the believers of Allah. Norway is a country with the Christian principles and believe in true God. The God of Christians and Jews not God of Muslim and Islam Allah. We have many examples from the past history, from the Bible etc, that being a friends with non believers I mean believers of Allah not believers of the true God will cause troubles. And Norway will pay for that for sure. Helping Muslim, Islamic people to live on the Christian land will cause problems. They will try sooner or later take over and Norway will become Islamic Republic of Norway. We have not far example what is going on in Malmo in Sweden where there is Ghetto of Muslim, Islamic people. The Jewish people are persecuted there and they have to escape from there.
Sweden have problems with Muslim and Islamic people. Norway will soon have problems with the Muslim and Islamic people too. They feel here like it is their own land. They should be quiet and appreciated that the Christians land accepted them to live here. And they should be quiet and humble, but they are not. They do not appreiate what the Christian Protestant countries offering them. It is sad.

I find the comments from our Polish friend highly divisive, discriminatory and inflammatory. In fact some may describe them as blunt racism. He appears to be doing the opposite of what he is preaching. A human being’s worth can never be measured by their class, birth, religious allegiance or ethnicity. Norway is quite right to be an open civilised society and without any offence to the Polish society, Poland has a lot to learn from Norway. If our Polish friend expects xenophibia and divisive policies that descriminate against the minorities based on Gender, race , religion–then he is very mistaken. Norway has a long history of civil society and well functioning democratic institutions and policies -and it is not going to tear those down by the bigotry of any religious zealot.
