Palestine Committee in politics and press

The screenshot above is from the website of the party Rødt (Red). In the post deputy leader of Rødt Ingrid Baltzersen refers to an article in Aftenposten on how the Norwegian Pension Fund in part is invested in projects which are in violation of international law. The Aftenposten article Baltzersen refers to was written by journalist Lars Akerhaug. As it happens, Baltzersen and Akerhaug know each other from before – they both held leading positions in the Palestine Committee at the same time.

The screenshot below is from a press release from the Norwegian Palestine Committee, dated July 19th 2004, on the occasion of Ariel Sharon’s visit to Oslo. The press release says among other: “The Palestine Committee will arrange as many actions and large demonstrations against Sharon as possible during his stay in Oslo”. The press release is signed Ingrid Baltzersen, leader of the Palestine Committee in Oslo, and Lars Akerhaug, member of the national board.

A pattern spelling hegemony

There is nothing wrong with people meeting up for a short while and then meeting up again at another crossroads. But the extent to which the Palestinian cause, even when furthered by Hamas, has infiltrated the Norwegian journalistic corps goes beyond the odd event and isolated incident. There is a pattern here, spelling hegemony.
