Two minute hate session: Hate Avigdor Lieberman

In George Orwell’s 1984 , the two-minute-hate session is a daily period during which citizens of Oceania must watch images of their enemies and express their hatred for them. In Norway, citizens are regularly encouraged to express their hate of Israel.

The screenshot above is from the website of Rød Ungdom, the youth wing of the party Rødt (Red), a left-of-centre group. The caption below the picture of Lieberman says “Jerk of the week” while the face is Trond Giske (Labor politico) is massaged with the kinder “Hero of the week”.

Something tells us that this is not the first time, nor the last time, that Lieberman will be elected “jerk of the week” at this particular site.

While Rødt is a small party, it is disproportionately popular with journalists. In fact it is nine times as popular with journalists as it is with the electorate. In 2010, the survey Nordiske Mediedager found that if it were up to the Norwegian media corps, Rødt would be alloted a full 9 seats (out of 169 total). The general electorate would give the party only a single (1) seat.

In their own roundabout way many Norwegian journalists spread the crude message of Rød Ungdom to the general public. Israel, they tell us, is unspeakably bad. So very bad. Perhaps punish, they wink. Perhaps bomb, the Socialist Left suggests.
