It is likely the role of a broker prevents Norwegian authorities from putting what others refers to as terrorists into this category.
FM Børge Brende (Conservatives) has confirmed Norway is in negotiation with Hamas in the Middle East. Meanwhile, coalition partners of the Progressives opens the door to following the example of the EU; putting this organization on a list of terrorists, as reported by Klassekampen (Translator’s note: Marxist daily) ahead of this weekend.
As of today, Norway relates to the UNs list over terrorists, in which Al Qaeda, Taliban and related groups are listed as terrorist. The EU list is more extensive; including the Hams and the Tamil Tigers (LTTE). Norway is only duty bound to sanction those on UNs list.
If Norway had put Hamas on the list of terrorists; and also the LTTE in Sri Lanka, this would have been in breach of long term lines of Norwegian foreign policy. Good diplomatic connections and work in a far future perspective has given us a role as a peace broker in Sri Lanka and a unique role in the Middle East conflict.
It is likely this broker role has prevented Norwegian authorities from categorizing what other refers to as terrorism.
“Norwegian commitment to peace talks may be somewhat overblown. The self-image may very likely be larger than the role we actually play. We shall contribute to the best of our capabilities; however, protecting our own citizens should be the first priority”, as stated by Christian Tybring-Gjedde of the Progressives, being a member of the Storting’s Committee on Defense and Foreign Policy, to Klassekampen.
We are in agreement with Tybring-Gjedde over the Norwegian self-image being overblown at times; we disagree over his conclusions. Some extra condemnation from small Norway hardly puts any more power behinds demands set by the larger countries. As a bridge-builder and peace broker, we can make a difference.
The Middle East conflict is escalating by every day; taking ever more victims. It is more than important than ever that somebody has credibility, being able to talk to both parties.

A well-researched and commonsensical op-ed on Norwegian media and politicians; being attacked over lacking legal competence in international law, thereby misinterpreting Israeli actions and intentions in the context of proportionality.

“The hospital’s oxygen equipment and elevators are destroyed. It all so absurd, being a new level at this war. Israel shuns nothing. There are are children, women, the elderly and bedridden patients. This is pure butchery, says Gilbert, watching the smoke from the hospital, watching TV reports in the country, to Dagbladet”.
