Lifted from VG. Applause to Skartveit for this eminent oped The great betrayal Synagogue OSLO (AP) We were unable to protect our Jewish compatriots during the war. And today we are unable to give them the security they need. Do we simply not care? OpEd by Hanne Skartveit In the street where I lived for some years, just outside Washington, DC, we had a neighbor that almost every day dragged a large box and out of his car. When he was driving the kids to soccer practice, he dragged the box into the hallway of the house. And when he got home, he put the box back in the trunk of the car. The box was filled with blankets, flashlights, water and dried food. The Jewish family, who eventually became our good friends, had kept the box in the car since the terrorist attack on U.S. 11 September 2001. Al-Qaeda, who was behind the attack, had already urged Muslims to kill Americans and their allies – everywhere. Jews know from historical experience, that those who come with such threats, act according to what they say. Jews also know that anti-Semitism is alive all over the world. It either began or ended with the Holocaust, the industrial [...]

By: Lise Marit Kalstad and Olav Solvang Norway set a new record in the import of goods from Israel in 2011. In the last year Norway purchased Israeli goods for NOK 722 million, the corresponding number for 2010 was NOK 653 million, the newspaper Norway Today writes. Also the Norwegian exports to Israel increased, according to figures from Statistics Norway (SSB). - The main reason for the increase is that the Israelis produce high quality products in a number of areas, says the leader Dag Abrahamsen in the Norwegian-Israeli Chamber of Commerce to Norway Today. Increased involvement. Abrahamsen points at the same time that the Norwegian trade with Israel is not particularly high yet. - It is gratifying that the amount increases, but on the other hand, we have still a long way to go before we are in line with our Scandinavian neighbors, he said. The organization With Israel for Peace (MIFF) has nearly tripled its membership over the past five years. They now have over 5,300 members, and the goal is to round 6000 before the summer. - This is [...]

“Dear all, This year marks 70 years since the “Danube” cast off from this quay, and embarked on a voyage of shame . 532 Jews were brutally stowed on board. Only nine returned. One of them was Samuel Steinmann. He is the last survivor. I’m especially glad you are here with us. Today we remember the millions of innocent people who were wiped out in History’s most heinous genocide. We remember all of the Norwegian Jews who were murdered. We remember the Roma, the disabled, gays and other victims of the Hitler regime’s cruelty. The Holocaust will forever be a stain in the history of Mankind. Thursday 26 November 1942 the Holocaust came to Norway. One of the many who were arrested that day was Ruth Maier. Her story is well known thanks to Gunvor Hofmo and Jan Erik Vold. At dawn on 26 November heavy boots stomped up the stairs in the rooming house “Englehjemmet” in Oslo. Shortly after, the frightened girlfriends of a humble Jewish girl, saw her being led out the door from her home in Dalsbergstien 3 The last glimpse of Ruth Maier is that she is pushed into a black car by two powerful Norwegian police officers. Five [...]

Finally, the first real step towards acknowledging our own role in the tragedy. Only after accepting responsibility, can the hard work of forgiveness and the arduous task of reconstructing relations begin. Lifted from Aftenposten (by Elisabeth Rodum and Halvor Hegtun) PM Jens Stoltenberg (Labour) deeply regretted the deportation of Norwegian Jews at the Holocaust Memorial ceremony in Oslo on friday. This autumn marks 70 years since, “the Norwegian Holocaust.” During the WWII, 772 Norwegian Jews or refugees were deported from Norway to the Nazi extermination camps. Only 34 survived. - The murders iare without doubt the work of the Nazi. But it was Norwegians who carried out the arrests. And it was the Norwegians who drove the cars, Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said in his speech. - Without denying the Nazis’s responsibility, it’s time to acknowledge that the police and other Norwegians participated in the arrests and deportations of Jews. It is now incumbent upon us, to t to express our deep regret that this could happen on Norwegian soil, said Stoltenberg. - Many open wounds 50 years after the war, the Parliament established a financial settlement, collectively and individually, for the liquidation of the Norwegian Jews. Just under NOK 200 million was allocated, of [...]

For more details on the event itself, you can go to http://www.holocaustdagen.no/ Thinks Jens will apologize to the Jews Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg is expected to come up with a form of apology to the Norwegian Jews during the International Holocaust Remembrance Day today. Bjørn Arild Hatlem - I think certainly that the Prime Minister should apologize. There are many wounds that are still open and an apology is long over, historian Kjersti Dybvig at University College in London say to dagen.no. The Memorial Day will be marked in many places around Norway and in Oslo PM Stoltenberg will hold the keynote speech at the quayside. Dybvig will launch her book ”Jews and police in Stavanger – the Convenience of Forgetfulness ” on Pax publishers in March. - Most of the Jews who were arrested in Norway, were Norwegian citizens. When they were arrested, they lost their citizenship.
Today, at 3 PM, our PM Jens Stoltenberg is widely expected to officially and formally apologize to the Norwegian Jewish community for the state sponsored persecution and murder of Norwegian citizens with a Jewish background during the WWII. Whatever form that eventual apology finally would be presented as, does not detract from the perception that Norway continues to send mixed signals to our own Jewish community as well as our well documented partiality in the ME conflict. Whilst we as a nation, prepare to possibly apologize to our Jewish minority, former Bishop of Oslo, Gunnar Stålsett led a rally against extremism. In his address, he said among other things Through the years we have paraded against racism and war. We have turned our backs on neo-Nazism anti-Semitism. We stand shoulder to shoulder, Christians, Jews, Muslims, believers and humanists. Today too, we stand together for human dignity and tolerance. Fine words, but actions speak louder than words. Stålsett himself should look in himself before preaching tolerance to others, judging by his own record, he leaves a bit to be desired in that department. To make it even more complex, how can a rally that features Lars Gule as a speaker, remotely [...]

With reference to yesterday’s post that Norwegian Jews are reluctant to be registered as members of the Jewish congregations. Vårt Land, which prides itself on its high ethical profile, tends to slip dangerously low in actually exercising their own ethical ideals; here is a sample of what passes for polite and suitable opinion on the topic of what Norway can do to protect its Jewish minority, by a man called Per Elias Vågenes (who, as far as I have been able to ascertain, has no professional relationship to Vårt Land, he merely expresses his own personal opinions) There can hardly be one upright person in Norway who does not think that Jews, or other minorities, should enjoy the right to feel safe in the Norwegian society. Information regarding the Holocaust crime is compulsory in the Norwegian school system, and it is quite normal that 6th form pupils travel to Auschwitz to see the memorial over these sites of crimes with their own eyes. But the attitude to the state of Israel has changed. After the war, the slogan was ” a people without a land to land without a people “. The average Norwegian did not know any better.
Lifted from Vårt Land Jews do not dare join Jewish communities The Jewish community in Norway has shrunk by nearly a fifth in ten years. Fear of making themselves visible as a Jew, is one of the reasons, the leader of the Jewish Congregation in Oslo, Ervin Kohn believes. by: Geir Ole Bjartvik Figures from Statistics Norway show that the number of members for the two Jewish congregations in Norway has decreased from 1,015 to 819 members over the past decade. This corresponds to a decrease of almost 20 percent. According to Ervin Kohn, Chairman and Trustee of the Jewish community in Oslo, this decline is due to a mix of different factors: Some members have moved from Norway. Some marry out of the congregations. The Member Register has undergone a clean-up. Members pass away. - As we do not proselytize, we do not have this avenue for growth. Fear visibility. Kohn says that the fear of making themselves visible as Jews, keep some from joining. Others drop their membership because they think it’s too scary to be registered as a member of the Jewish minority. - I just spoke with one person in Stavanger, who said that the desire to keep a low profile was the main reason for not becoming a member, says Kohn. He says [...]

First an admission – one Norwegian newspaper did report on this incident – the Christian daily Dagen. Excellent as though it is, it is hardly a paper read by your average Norwegian, so for the majority of Norwegians, who rely on NRK, Dagbladet, VG and Aftenposten for coverage of domestic affairs, this one has slipped under the radar. Jewish funeral procession “attacked” in Oslo When the Jewish man Gabriel Philip Stiris (91) was buried in Oslo early in december, an unknown man appeared and shouted «fuck the jews» and behaved in a manner that was threatening. Ove Eikje - We were shocked when this happened, and have never heard of anything like this, his son Morten Stiris tells Dagen. He was about to shovel earth on the coffin when the unknown man expressed his hatred of Jews. The man stood outside the fence of the Jewish cemetery. Maybe he had discovered the obituary in the newspaper Aftenposten, and knew that a Jewish burial would take place at this time? Chase The man raised his left arm to a Nazi salute, and he seemed threatening. This was a very deliberate action, my father was the only Jew who was buried that day, says Morten [...]

HISTORIC DARKNESS Vårt Land 2011 12 20 p 3, 4 Erling Rimehaug. Not Online Summary. Op-ed on the Shoah in Norway. Mr. Rimehaug points to the Shoah in Norway still not being a fully integrated part of Norwegian history, and anti-Semitism still being very much alive. Quotes: “The genocide on Norwegian Jews is still not an integrated part of Norwegian history on WW2. It has been a separate part, in parallel to the Norwegian part of history, Ervin Kohn of the Mosaic congregation said in a speech at the anniversary for the expulsion of Jews from Norway in 1942 in Oslo on Sunday”. “Two young guys wearing shades and badges reminds us of the unpleasant reminder there still are- or should we say remains- some people hating Jews enough to kill them”. “Kohn reminds us of the fact it was not the Germans sending Jews to Auschwitz. It was Norwegian police who dutifully executed the orders”. “We shall not use these examples to incite against Muslims or Palestinians. Nor can we shrug away the fact hatred of Jews is still alive in this world”. linkscolor = "000000"; highlightscolor = "888888"; backgroundcolor = "FFFFFF"; channel = "none";

The Occupy Wall Street movement has proven to be flash in the pan, but nevertheless, it has managed to inspire some Norwegian nincompoops: “Occupy” movement. HERE, THE NORWEGIAN OCCUPY MOVEMENT Dagens Næringsliv 2011 12 16, Anna Werenskjold Summary. Dagens Næringsliv lampoons Norwegian copycats of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement, among them one Anja Askelund, a student/activist and member of the “Green Party” of Norway. The newspaper seems less than impressed by their efforts and their attempts at “direct democracy”. As for Ms. Askelund, she is the author of this poetic gem: ABC Nyheter 2009 01 19 Dear Jew, dear desperado. Your hands are filled with blood, you are doing the unforgivable. You kill our defenseless brothers and sisters. You send bombs from a distance; they are closed in, and cannot flee. Arms and legs are torn off. Our brethren and sisters die and are mutilated. We, the world community, let it happen. Our brethren and sisters are worthless, their lives mean nothing. Any hope over a decent life is smashed. Dear Jew, dear dewserado. You are scared. Of course, you have done the unforgivable. Now enter Gaza. See these people. They yare also scared, they have lost their dear. They [...]

Following up on the story from a few days back, when we reported that Jørund Rytman, the new leader of Stortingets Friends of Israel group, had written to the Minister of Health to query why Israeli wines are not readily available in Vinmonopolet’s stores. Today, the NRK has a follow up story, where a radio reporter from the news program Political Quarter joins Rytman on a search for Israeli wines in Vinmonopolet’s outlets in Oslo. Of 4511 different brands of red wine, none are labeled as originating in Israel. One brand of red wine originates from the Golan Heights, but is labeled “other origin”. Rytman suggests this is evidence of a de facto boycott, and asks since when do we categorize this wine as “other origin”, this is politics. The Minister of Health has replied to Rytmans query, and she explains that the lack of Israeli wines has nothing to do with boycott, but lack of demand. This argument, as well as a slip up by a representative from Vinmonopolet, was picked up by Hans Rustad at Document.no (unauthorized translation) Israeli wine is Syrian Hans Rustad The NRK News program broadcasted today a story on why there are no Israeli [...]

A couple of days ago, we referred once more to the infamous book, Daddy is a pirate, by medic and author Hans Sande, and how the Israeli embassy was infuriated by the Norwegian Cultural Council’s decision to sponsor this book, which casts Israeli’s as beasts. The Israeli ambassador complained, and today we have the response by the Minister of Culture, Anniken Huitfeldt: From Vårt Land Huitfeldt does not regret pirate book The Government does not want to apologize for the children’s book “Daddy is a pirate” that presents Israeli soldiers in a negative light. This is the reply the Minister of Culture Anniken Huitfeldt (AP) writes to the Israeli ambassador in Norway, Michael Eligal. The letter is a response to the ambassadors complaint that the children’s book ”Daddy is a pirate” was published with support from the Norwegian Cultural Council, which means that the book will now be distributed among Norwegian libraries. The formal complaint did, among other things, state that “The way Israel and its soldiers, a friendly country and a friendly army, are presented in a book for young children, is terrible.” In the letter to the Israeli ambassador, the Minister of Culture Huitfeldt assures that the Norwegian government has a strong commitment to combat all forms of anti-Semitism. The Minister also emphasizes that she has duly noted the ambassador’s views and concerns on this matter, the newspaper Dagen writes. Huitfeldt informs that all the books that are supported by the Cultural Council are carefully reviewed by several expert committees with regards to the [...]

We return to the developing saga of the Norwegian debate on circumcision, and while I take the view that in the name of preventative medicine, i.e. to keep the small, but nevertheless realistic risks of something going wrong under control, it is a good thing that the Ministry of Health has tabled a proposal that circumcision of boys should be done at a hospital and by adequately trained personnel. Personally, I am not convinced that the procedure has to be carried out at a hospital, what with MRSA infested surgeries that would pose an even greater health risk, plus not to say the unnecessary use of surgeries that probably could be put to better use, for instance, giving cancer patients adequate treatment all over the country? But the idea of adequately trained personnel is one that is central at least in Jewish practice, and although I only have a patchy understanding of Muslim practices with regards to circumcision, I would like to see the Muslim mother who gladly would give up her son to a brutal butcher? Jews and Muslims alike, have always regarded personal hygiene as their strongest weapon against disease. For the act of circumcision, the Jews rely [...]
