Lifted from miff.no, but also featured in Dagen, although surprisingly not very much reported in mainstream media: Imports from Israel increased by 11 percent to a record level The Norwegian imports from Israel rose more than the overall import from other countries. We bought Israeli goods for NOK 722 million in 2011, compared to NOK 653 million in 2010. by Conrad Myrland The general increase in Norwegian imports, ships and oilplatforms excluded, was 9.3 per cent from 2010 to 2011. Imports from Israel rose by 10.7 percent, according to figures presented by Statistics Norway. Never before have imports from Israel have been greater. The previous peak year of 2008 is off by almost NOK 15 million. Imports from Israel increased more than imports from the Nordic countries (6 %), EU (7.8 %), United States (8.1 %) and the OECD countries(9.6 %). It is slightly lower than the overall increase in imports from Africa(16.4 p%) and Asia (12 %). Also the Norwegian exports to Israel rose from 588 million in 2010 to 622 millionkroner in 2011. - It is very gratifying to see that trade with Israel is increasing, says Conrad Myrland, general manager of With Israel for Peace. - Powerful forces in Norway are working for a boycott of Israel, but Israel has fortunately such strong and competitive goods that embargo supporters can’t manage to get the general population to rally behind the calls for boycott, says Myrland. The Christian daily Dagen adds this information (by Ove Eikje) I am not surprised by these numbers. The main reason is simply that we need electrical components, and they are largely made in Israel, says professor of economics, Ola H. Grytten in a comment. The previous best level for Norwegian imports from Israel amounted to 707.3 million kroner in 2008. The preliminary figures for the Norwegian foreign [...]

Following up on the story from a few days back, when we reported that Jørund Rytman, the new leader of Stortingets Friends of Israel group, had written to the Minister of Health to query why Israeli wines are not readily available in Vinmonopolet’s stores. Today, the NRK has a follow up story, where a radio reporter from the news program Political Quarter joins Rytman on a search for Israeli wines in Vinmonopolet’s outlets in Oslo. Of 4511 different brands of red wine, none are labeled as originating in Israel. One brand of red wine originates from the Golan Heights, but is labeled “other origin”. Rytman suggests this is evidence of a de facto boycott, and asks since when do we categorize this wine as “other origin”, this is politics. The Minister of Health has replied to Rytmans query, and she explains that the lack of Israeli wines has nothing to do with boycott, but lack of demand. This argument, as well as a slip up by a representative from Vinmonopolet, was picked up by Hans Rustad at Document.no (unauthorized translation) Israeli wine is Syrian Hans Rustad The NRK News program broadcasted today a story on why there are no Israeli [...]

WHY ARE ISRAELI WINES BOYCOTTED? Dagen 2011 12 15 p 4, 5, Tor Weibye Summary. Somewhat contrary to its usual policy on alcohol- Dagen is rather abstaining on this issue- the newspaper raises the question over why the Vinmonopolet[1], the state owned Norwegian alcohol sales outlet, is not marketing Israeli wines, as they have to be specially ordered, a time consuming process. Jørund Rytman of the Progressives, chairman of the friends of Israel at the Storting, is on a more serious note: he regrets the way Israel is treated in Norwegian media, and by parts of the public, “bordering on racism”. Quote: “We are not cheerleaders for Israel’s political decisions, but we will defend Israel’s right to exist and make certain their views are heard. When the whole issue is not conveyed to the Norwegian people, this makes me feel resigned and frustrated. I will do my bit through the ‘Friends of Israel’, Jørund Rytman tells Dagen”.
Article pulled from NRK, unauthorized translations Amnesty reacts strongly to news that the Finance Ministry does not wish to pull out from a Chinese oil gigant, even if the Council on Ethics claims that the oil company in questions does not comply with Human Rights. This is the first time that the Ministry of Finance does not take the advice from the Council on Ethics for the Government Pension Fund to pull out of a company. The Secretary General of Amnesty in Norway John Peder Egenæs believes the reason for this is that the government is afraid to further deteriorate the already complicated relationship to China. Constructing oil pipeline The controversy is related to the Chinese oil gigant PetroChina. The Council on Ethics believes that the company is responsible for breaches on Human rights in Burma. The company has constructed an oil pipeline through Burma, and many person with minority background have been forced to move. The Norwegian Petroleum Fund owns shares in a daughter company, But the Council on Ethics thinks the ties between the two companies are so close that it would be necessary to pull out.
As one reader commented yesterday, the “international BDS day” on November 26, does not seem like a randomly selected date. Officially, but perhaps only as some sort of paper exercise, Norway recognizes the enormous betrayal of our Jews: Tale/artikkel, 22.09.2011 Av: Utenriksminister Jonas Gahr Støre Stumbling to Remember Kronikk i Yedioth Ahronoth (Israel), 22. september 2011 On 26 October 1942, the Norwegian police arrested all Jewish men. On 26 November 1942, all Jewish women and children were arrested. Nineteen Jews from Calmeyers gate 15 in Oslo – which also housed a synagogue at the time – were arrested and deported that autumn. Today, this is the home of the Oslo Jewish Museum. Of the 65 who were deported from Calmeyers gate and the surrounding streets, only one returned. The Holocaust – the attempt at total annihilation – was a fact. The worst of it unfolded in the camps. But part of that terrible story took place in Oslo, when the Jews were arrested and driven to the harbor. And we must face the fact that this particular link in the chain of events was the work of Norwegians. This remains even though Norway was under German occupation. We must also remember [...]

Norwegian Rap band with a lefty twist, Gatas parlament, must have a most peculiar muse inspiring their poetic and peace loving music. Here is a sample of their attitudes towards Jews (euphemistically called Israelis….) [Verse 4 Norwegian] Norwegian lyrics: [Intro] All of us are antiracist, don’t accuse us for being antisemmetic, yeah Grenade rain down over the roofs of Gaza. Hits hospitals, hits kindergarden kids, hits everywhere. Of course we’re talking about an apartheid state. They build a wall between themselves and those who should’nt have citizenship. For if you call it blood-palestine then no rules apply and believe that it gives a new macabre meaning to the word blood orange If it’s grown in stolen land and harvested from a dead body. Not in my name, not for my money. It’s not enough to stand around and cry anymore. So we must attack fundamentalists and show Israel Cause they don’t care about resolutions anyway. Just a small piece of a much bigger picture. Like when we boicotted when I was much younger. The responsibility lies with us all so we want everyone with us everyone with concience, Boicott Israel!
The annual NRK telethon this year donates the funds collected to the Norwegian People’s Aid and their work to clear land mines, explosive devices left after war and conflict. The Telethon is a source of national pride, and billions of Kroner have been collected over the years, to in some small measure help ameliorate harsh conditions that unfortunately is a reality for the majority of the worlds inhabitants. This year, several newspapers have informed of an initiative started by a woman on the southern tip of Norway, who sent text messages to friends and contacts, asking them to not give any money to the Norwegian People’s Aid, because they are anti-Semites The long and the short of it, the message was sent wide and afar, ending up at some point with a journalist at Fædrelandsvennen, and from there it was picked up by other papers. The papers’ own reporting on this, can only be said to have been factual, correct and therefore unproblematic. However, reading talkbacks, your hair just wants to stand on end for the sheer hate speech allowed there, which makes the “safety rules” introduced after 22/7, to avoid flaming speech (you must register with full name), look [...]

A few days ago, we reported on Fellesforbundet’s (The Norwegian United Federation of Trade Unions) motion to vote for a boycott of its sister-union, the Histadrut. Vårt Land now reports that the motion was rejected by a clear majority of union members, which is sort of good news. Nevertheless, the union voted for several anti-Israel measures, faulting Israel alone for the break down of talks in peace negotiations, and calling for boycott of Israeli products made in disputed areas. The daily manager of MIFF (With Israel for Peace) Conrad Myrland, questioned the union’s obsession with Israel, calling it incomprehensible that a Norwegian Union engage so intensely with a foreign conflict, while demonstrably ignoring conflicts in other countries, with much greater impact. He calls it a pathological obsession of this conflict and says that many view Israel as the greatest political dilemma in our time. Well put, Mr. Myrland! Now we just need to continue to shine a bright light at all the spots where Israel bashing is perceived as politically correct. It should have a high cost to be able to make a political or professional name for oneself by smearing Israel and the Jews. linkscolor = "000000"; highlightscolor = [...]

The leader of Fellesforbundet (The Norwegian United Federation of Trade Unions), Lars Frøysa wants to boycott the Israeli Histadrut, on the grounds that it is an apartheid organization, according to an article in Vårt Land This is an organization only for Israeli Jews. In our world this is apartheid. We think that the labour movement has an obligation to protect all workers, says Lars Frøysa. He is leader of the local chapter at Celsa Armeringsstål in Mo i Rana, who has submitted the motion. He further claims that in spite of the Union’s rejection of the proposal, he is convinced that they will prosper at the ballot, since members are free individuals. Our old friend Hilde Henriksen Waage, the historian and researcher who on occasion slips into activist mode on Israel related matters, has been consulted (apparently nobody was available at the Histadrut for comments, but that may reflect a certain insensitivity and ignorance on Jewish matters, since probably they were closed for Yom Kippur observation (in addition to the weekly days of rest for workers, in Israel on Friday and Saturday): From its inception in the 1920ies, Histadrut was am important instrument for the Zionist movement in the construciton [...]

This appears to be the opinion of the editor of Universitetsavisa, Tore Oksholen. In an oped posted today, he laments that many researchers post 22/7 feel that they are being harassed into silence. See below for an unauthorized translation. As somebody who is intimately familiar with the Norwegian scientific community, may I be so blunt as to say that this rings very hollow. Typically, researchers in the exact sciences have very little time, or even interest in, getting involved in academic boycott proposals or other abuse of the privilege of being a scientist at our top academic institutions. This has created a false impression for others in less exacting academic fields, that they somehow have a free pass to pretend they own the Truth and use the institutions to propel whatever fancy ideas they wish. I was once present at a refereeing committee meeting for a Norwegian scientific journal. That was a very strange experience where surprising comments with no relevance to the article in question appeared to be the norm. The weirdest thing was that even after the meeting, snipe remarks were traded, cheaply, and brought a very toxic effect into the lab afterwards – two research colleagues clashed [...]

A friend sent me a mail today, with a link to an article by Barry Rubin. In fact the same link as Eric R has shared. I am sure most of you have read it, but just in case, you can read it here – it transpires that eyebrows have been raised in important peoples offices over Official Norway’s cozy relationship with Hamas. Curious to see what else has been going on behind closed doors, I took a look at other cables also released now. Let me just first say that I don’t think the US has anything to be embarrassed by, this is written in a very polite form, sticks to facts and can in no way be said to be so in your face aggressive as seeing a Norwegian minister in office, chatting casually with a guy who holds up a sign that calls the US and Israel the axis of evil during a demonstration that ended up with a massive riot in Oslo! I just wish there was a similarly civicly minded person working at a Norwegian institution handling sensitive information who would think of copying cables sent from Norwegian embassies around the world. I am sure [...]

lifted from wikileaks. Please note that later cables have revealed that the relationship between Norway and Israel has improved, so any heated comments that Israel should sever its relationship with Norway, full stop would not accurately fit the bill as things currently stand. 1. (C) Summary: Norway aspires to be a leader in Middle East peace negotiations and could be a genuine asset in bringing peace to the region. Norway's diplomatic principles, focus on dialogue, and mediation history have helped raise Norway's profile as a peacemaker. Its tense relationship with Israel and anti-Semitism in Norway, as well as its approach to Hamas and Hamas positions, could constrain the effectiveness of Norway's desired high-profile mediator role. Part II of this cable series explores the growth of anti-Semitism in Norway and Part III analyses Norway's Foreign Minister's critical role in elevating Norway on the world stage. End Summary. Norwegian Diplomacy: Strengths and Desire for a Big Role --------------------------------------------- ----------- ¶2. (C) Shaped by FM Stoere, Norwegian foreign policy prioritizes peace promotion. Stoere is a skilled foreign minister, drawing on national traditions of international engagement, and adding his own focus on humanitarian aid and peace promotion to create an appealing portrayal of Norway [...]
