With reference to yesterday’s post that Norwegian Jews are reluctant to be registered as members of the Jewish congregations. Vårt Land, which prides itself on its high ethical profile, tends to slip dangerously low in actually exercising their own ethical ideals; here is a sample of what passes for polite and suitable opinion on the topic of what Norway can do to protect its Jewish minority, by a man called Per Elias Vågenes (who, as far as I have been able to ascertain, has no professional relationship to Vårt Land, he merely expresses his own personal opinions) There can hardly be one upright person in Norway who does not think that Jews, or other minorities, should enjoy the right to feel safe in the Norwegian society. Information regarding the Holocaust crime is compulsory in the Norwegian school system, and it is quite normal that 6th form pupils travel to Auschwitz to see the memorial over these sites of crimes with their own eyes. But the attitude to the state of Israel has changed. After the war, the slogan was ” a people without a land to land without a people “. The average Norwegian did not know any better.
It is Christmas, so Norwegian priests are busy spreading their gospel. Live must be deliciously simple when all your problems are one dimensional. On his next trip to Jerusalem, I shall be happy to take the Vickar Vaaland along to the Mercaz HaRav yeshiva to meet the kids there. Of how silly of me, they are not there any longer, they were all brutally murdered. Life in the Valley of Death A valley outside Jerusalem has given the name to the biblical “hell”. But is was only after the poet Dante that hell became a place to be reckoned with. Tor Øystein Vaaland (Ordained priest in the Church of Norway From all sides, the mountains plunge into the gouge that has been known as Gehenna for millennia. Matthew writes about the place five times, thus being the disciple who with more frequency cites Jesus on the name of the place. Matthew describes how before the time of the Jews, this pit was used for ritual sacrifice of children, a dump and a place where the bodies of dead people were burned.
They are a special lot, these Norwegian Christians… what will be their next news feed? That the Israelis (which we all know are the Jews) use children’s blood in their matze? This seems too familiar and too low, even for the Norwegian Church Aid. And the Church of Norway wonders why Norwegians don’t really trust them? CHURCH AID: FEAR MORE VIOLENCE AGAINST PALESTINIANS Verdens Gang 2011 09 20 Sigrid Helen Svendsen Summary. Atle Sommerfeldt fears violent settlers will take revenge on Palestinians if Palestinians are given statehood through the UN. Quote: “I fear violence will escalate, the Israeli government introducing punitive measures against the Palestinian state. This may lead to people entering a difficult humanitarian situation”. (On the Israeli government) “I believe they reckons with the settlers movement attempting to provoke more violence, legitimizing Israeli military intervention. Equally, one is prepared on Israelis reintroducing check points, destroying communications in the West Bank and withholding taxes”. (On being in a traffic jam). “This is an example of procrastination and harassment. They make it difficult to move around; and it is nothing but pointing out who is in power her”. Dag Henrik Tuastad, a PRIO researcher is in agreement over these claims. [...]

The leader of the Jewish Congregation in Oslo has posted an oped in Vårt Land on the Children’s Ombudsman’s proposal to introduce an age limit for circumcision, in reality an attempt to ban the practice. Kohn clarifies that the author of this article is Jan Benjamin Rødner, on behalf of the Jewish Congregation in Oslo Kohn’s and Rødner’s article is not substantially different from other articles previously reported on here, but some salient points include: (unauthorized translations of excerpts of VL oped) Serious concern. However, the ombudsman Reidar Hjermann made a submission which gives cause for serious concern. Hjermann maintains the child’s right to decide over its own body, which in principle is fine. On the other hand the Children’s Ombudsman is proposing a ban on circumcision until the child is 15-16 years old. It is worrying that the statement shows no willingness to see the impact of this proposal on minorities’ culture, or their welfare. The Ombudsman mentions in passing and only as a pretext to argue against circumcision, that being circumcised can mean a lot for the child. The submission [to the consultation on regulating circumcision] is made by and for the majority, but the effect will only be felt by minorities. The submission does also not take into account that international conventions are based on the presumption that parents want what is best for their children and that their right and duty to exercise their parental authority, therefore, must [...]

From Vårt Land Anne Sender: The Jews must discuss Israel The former leader of the Jewish Congregation in Oslo criticizes Christian congregations that collect money for settlements Geir Ole Bjartvik geir.ole.bjartvik@vl.no. The former leader of the Jewish Congregation in Oslo says in an open in Vårt Land on Tuesday that the Jewish community in Norway to a greater degree must show that there are many different views on Israel’s policies within the congregation. We must criticize mistakes. She underlines that Israel is of fundamental importance for the congregation in Oslo as a “Zionist congregation”. But Norwegian Jews ought nonetheless criticize Israeli mistakes, she thinks. “There have been so many others with strong opinions”, Sender writes to explain why DMT until now has kept the disagreement on Israel behind closed doors, more than other Jewish congregations elsewhere in Europe. Problematic attitudes. But this ought to end now, says Sender. She refers to how, among others, Israeli group have involved Norwegian Jews into the problems [ME conflict, M. McG]. The last few years, some comments, law proposals and attitudes presented by rabbis, party leaders and members of Government been so problematic, that I believe that we, as Jewish leaders in the Diaspora, must [...]

Just as we have spotted, translated and uploaded stories where Lars Gule seems to have got the wrong end of the stick with regards to Judaism, Israel, we must be equally quick to do ditto when he takes a principled stance, and confronts some aspects of Islam that many find troublesome. Vårt Land has an article on how Gule clashed with Muslims at a recent meeting organized by Islam Net, a Muslim organization in Oslo Unauthorized translation of excerpt of the Vårt Land story: Right to build churches. You shall have the right to build mosques here, but where is your support for Christian’s right to build churches in Muslim countries. Where is i your support for the right to Christian proselytizing?, asked Gule. Gule pointed to the segregation of sexes, where women were relegated to the upstairs, as an example of what he meant is pure suppression. During the coffee break he was robustly confronted by a young Muslim woman. We are free. We are all free women. We have chosen this ourselves, and participate as equals. Islam honors women and ensures gender equality, the women pointed out, only to earn another salvo from Gule: – There were slaves [...]

The leader of Høyre, Erna Solberg has said in an interview with VG that Muslims in todays Norway are being treated like the Norwegian Jews were treated in the 1930s. To be very fair (and this is of fundamental importance in todays Norway), she has underlined that Muslims today are not subject to the brutal repressions as Jews were in the 1930s but thinks that the extreme agitation against Muslims, bears resemblance to hatred against Jews. This is an important clarification. I ask you to keep it in mind. She says (unauthorized translation) I have been in touch with ethnic minority youths, who are born and raised in Norway. Their greatest challenge is that they are frequently met with claims that they are not Norwegians. It ranges from discrimination at nightclubs, to always having to answer where they originally come from. They are met with different expectations based on prejudice, and many individual Muslims are being held collectively responsible for actions of all Muslims. She is careful to relate this to the job market in particular, that if you have a foreign sounding name, your chances of being called in for job interviews become very small. Lets analyze the various [...]

There must be many of us who are struggling to reconcile conflicting feelings about having a wildly multicultural society thrust upon us. I am equally sure that many of those who feel that more time is needed in order to integrate the immigrants into the wider community AS WELL AS preparing the ground in the native community to be accepting of not one, not two, but many different cultures at the same time – do not even for a second entertain the idea of murdering the newcomers. Or, as it is important to underline in these very difficult days, certainly not butcher kids at a summer camp, or workers on their way home from work, even if one may feel that the political platform of a particular political party is somewhat removed from ones own ideas and aspirations. Whereas it is a natural inclination in the wake of a massive tragedy as the one that has hit Norway, to tread more carefully, to avoid inflaming sentiments, even to avoid confrontations on certain aspects of our society until we are ready for such debates, it is not wise, as our former PM Jagland has done, to go out and warn other [...]

We are so terribly pained, we Norwegians. We cannot bring ourselves to believe this horror that took place. It was unimaginable. And it shook us out of the innocent belief that this could not take place here. What kind of beast could place a bomb in the heart of Oslo at a time when people prepare to go home after work? Or murder young kids who participated in a summer camp, full of fun, culture, music, friendship and political debate, each and every one of them putting their share’s worth towards constructing the society we all want? This horrific monster, I don’t even want to write his name – may it be erased from the surface of the earth – wanted to destroy our society, to replace it with dirt. I am very proud to see that the same kids who survived this tragedy dedicate themselves to love, to reconstruction, using the blessed memory of their friends who perished as fuel in order to go through this very painful moment. They are the promise for the future – they are our future. But I read comments that irritate. Some of them are too stupid to be taken seriously, such as [...]

A great troubadour, perhaps the last of his kind, was brutally shot and murdered in Guatemala City this morning. Facundo Cabral, a stellar performer in all of the Americas, but also in Israel and other Middle Eastern countries and in Africa, was declared a world messenger of peace by UNESCO in 1996. Hit hard by life – he survived terminal cancer, suffered diabetes and was blind, needing a cane for walking, and who lost his wife and baby daughter in a plane crash in 1978 – his graceful attitude to life was one of love; I love life so much because it cost me so much to enjoy it. From the cradle to the grave is a school, so if what we call problems are lessons, we see life differently.” His trademark opening to his shows – world wide – would be his philosophical interpretations and variations over the theme lech lecha, or, ‘go for you’, which sent Abraham away from his father’s home to become the founder of three of the worlds greatest religions, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, as a prologue to his most beloved song, No Soy de Aqui. Farewell, beloved friend, now you are an eternal star. linkscolor [...]

Vårt Land, the Christian daily which takes a wait and see approach to Israel, seems to need a little home schooling when it comes to geography, political realities of the Galilean hills. In a short article they inform us that the mayor of Jesus’s hometown refused to put up a christmas tree on the town square. Well, here is a short lesson in local geography and local political history, which they ought to be well advised to study before they proceed to publish utter rubbish in the future. Although Nazareth and Nazareth Illit lie very close to each other, it is Nazareth which is thought of as the hometown of Jesus, not Nazareth Illit. They have got it partially right in their article, they do recognize that Nazareth Illit is a Jewish town, but after that they get it all wrong. Nazareth Illit was built as a result of Arab hostility to Jews living in Nazareth. It caused not a small scandal some 25 years ago, when the first Jews, for the most part secular, but also some observant, simply wanted to build a new a nice neighborhood in Nazareth, bringing (in addition to an already bustling trade) more trade [...]

That the Church of Norway still has to own up to some pretty horrific views on Jews and Israel is already old news. We have previously written about how bishops minister to congregants on how the Jews no longer have a claim to the land of Israel, this on the heels of other howler, where bishops lined up to condemn and boycott Israel, as well as Norwegian Church Aid open and continous call for boycott of Israel. It would be fair to note that the same bishops keep mum in light of other tragic events -their silence after desperate Haitians were shot down and at least one murdered by UN troops is particularly disturbing. Yet, at a time when the Haitians are being held captive in grim prison camps, at the mercy of the UN and all the countries that pledged brotherly love and a bounty of money to help the Haitians out of misery, our top clergy and clerical politicos enjoy fine dining, the good life, and a good dosis of gossip and back stabbing at the meetings that count. Because at the annual Church Meeting, the highest authority of the Church of Norway, some politically correct commission forwarded [...]

The Norwegian Church Aid organized a field trip to Hebron with special invitees: Hadja Tajik, Labor who leg humped unwritten parliamentary rules to not use the Rostrum of the Parliament for cheap populism and sported a kaffiyeh in support of Mavi Marmari Islamic tugs, and is star member of the Friends of Palestine faction in Parliament. She has ignored calls for demanding immediate release of Hamas prisoner Gilad Shalit Inger Lise Hansen, Christian Democrats, who when support for her miniature party was sagging in polls suggested it should drop support of Israel in order to gain new votes. Now the party has dropped even further, and would not have a representative in the Storting if elections were held today. She thinks Israel is responsible for hardship, ignoring PA flagrant corruption even as a possible explanation. The security fence is in her stated opinion extremely suppressive, again ignoring that is was constructed to keep suicide bombers and groups with clearly stated genocidal goals. Torbjørn Røe Isaksen, Conservative who, judging by his blog is capable of balanced thought, his party however, is still under the influence of rabid Israel hater Kåre Willoch, who is on record for saying that the Israelis create [...]

The Rev. Harald Nordhaug, the bishop of Bjørgvin offers new exegetic insights and refers to Palestinian political priest Naim Ateek with whom he cosponsored an event in Bergen this week. According to the Reverend Bishop, the Bible (as in the New Testament) does not hold any particular promise to the Jews regarding the Land, since this was already delivered upon in the Old Testament, and expanded upon after the birth of Jesus. Hence, Jews of today, have no right to the Land of Israel. The Reverend then adds that Christians have no particular revelation by which to understand the Middle East conflict by, and rather than trusting their gut instinct they ought to be guided by ethics and international law. To be fair, the reverend was magnanimous enough to disprove of boycotting Israel, although this appears to be the raison d`être for the Friends of Saabel, the organizer of the event. Following the right reverends logic, where should the landless Jews migrate today? Maybe Spain would see fit to rehabilitate and repatriate some of their old refugees and their descendants, or maybe better yet, the reverend ought to take his own advice? This makes me remember an old joke. An [...]
