It is not only in the Netherlands that prominent people question the failure to apologize to the Jews for deportations and persecution. The former leader of the Jewish Congregation in Oslo, Rolf Kirchner has written an oped (, not online; in translation, to upload soonest) on the matter, but prominent Norwegians such as poet Jan Erik Wold, and writer Aslak Nore have also urged Norway to formally apologize to its Jewish community for persecutions and deportations during WW2. Dutch Urged to Apologize for Jewish Deportations By MIKE CORDER Associated Press Outspoken Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders called on the government Wednesday to apologize for the country’s “passive” response to the mass deportations of Jews by Nazi occupiers during World War II. The move is likely to re-ignite debate about Dutch attitudes to the wartime persecution of the country’s Jewish population. Of the 140,000 Jews who lived in the Netherlands before the war, more than 100,000 were deported and murdered. About 30,000 Jews live here now, out of a total population of nearly 17 million. Wilders is best known for his strident criticism of Islam and also is a strong supporter of Israel. He wrote to Prime Minister Mark Rutte on Wednesday [...]

It is not only Norway that behaves abysmally in the face of the escalating conflict in Syria. Sweden too, tries to sell an image of supreme righteousness, touts their neutrality, but in reality they are just as two faced as they were in 1940, letting their prejudices and commercial interests come before the needs of desperate human beings. It is not only Norway that bends over backwards to be perceived as the most anti-Israeli country in Europe, they are in good company of the Swedes, and also – when they are not busy explaining fiddling their expenses, or in other ways thieving from the British tax payer – several prominent British Parliamentarians. From the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter Sweden softens sanctions against Syria Sweden blocks the EU from imposing sanctions against two telecom companies operating in Syria. Both companies have business with Swedish Ericsson.Ericsson denies that the technology it sells can be used to monitor people. On Thursday, EU foreign ministers agreed to introduce new sanctions against Syria for 11 different companies, whose technology is suspected can be used to monitor dissidents. But Sweden stopped two companies from ending up on the sanctions list, the state-owned STE and the South Africa-based mobile [...]

In addition to being a constant irritation to German authorities for his meddling with domestic German affairs, Turkish prime minister and his government have been accused of war crimes by German scientists, academics and human rights activists. Norwegian media and commentators, politicians and human rights groups have preferred to brush this story under the carpet, lest any anybody should feel tempted to deviate from pet obsession; Israel. Just one more small example of the utter falseness and mono thematic agenda of our fantastic elites… Copied form document.no, which in turn refers to hudson-ny.org. Possibly just a tad false and Adding to the controversy, a group of German scientists, politicians and human rights activists greeted Erdogan’s visit to Germany by filing a war crimes complaint against the Turkish prime minister and nine other senior Turkish political and military officials. The complaint, filed with the Federal Prosecutor’s Office in the south-western German city of Karlsruhe on November 2, is based on 2002 “universal jurisdiction” legislation, which gives German courts the right to prosecute human rights violations committed anywhere in the world. The lawsuit accuses Erdogan and the others for ten acts of war crimes and crimes against humanity, including torture and the [...]

It makes my hair stand on end. Nordic countries concerned about measures against Palestinians You are here: Government.no / Ministry of Foreign Affairs / Press centre / News / Nordic countries concerned about measures against Palestinians The five Nordic foreign ministers discussed the situation in the Middle East today, focusing particularly on relations between Israel and the Palestinians in the wake of this week’s vote in UNESCO. Although the Nordic countries’ positions differed as regards the timing of Palestinian membership of UNESCO, they agree that the way forward must be based on a resumption of negotiations and the vision of a two-state solution. The five Nordic foreign ministers agree on the following: “We are opposed to the punitive measures Israel is currently discussing. Israel’s settlement policy and the expansion of its settlements are illegal under international law. It is completely unacceptable for Israel to withhold tax revenues it has collected on behalf of the Palestinian Authority. This would weaken the Palestinian institutions that the international community has helped to build up over a number of years. These punitive measures would undermine the [...]

It is not only in Norway that mass immigration from very distinct cultures and sets of values over a short period of time triggers a strong reaction from the native population. All over Europe, it seems the gut reaction is to impose rigid top down regulations, curtailing minority rights that the majority find difficult to adjust to. It is far from the first time in Europe’s history that such restrictions are dressed in a cloak of moral concern. Times may change, but not the ingrained xenophobia that characterizes the European nations. During the good times, when the Euro was king and champagne just the right stuff to wash away any lingering feeling of something is amiss, nobody spoke of curtailing the long established rights of minorities who have lived in Europe for more than 1000 years. Now, with the Euro in tatters, state bonds reduced to junk, a native population that resists the cultural and demographic changes that has been imposed on us over a very short time, people with power, smooth talkers with false concern for health and welfare, think they can calm the mood by removing visual signs of differentness. The religious symbols we want to wear on [...]

The leader of Høyre, Erna Solberg has said in an interview with VG that Muslims in todays Norway are being treated like the Norwegian Jews were treated in the 1930s. To be very fair (and this is of fundamental importance in todays Norway), she has underlined that Muslims today are not subject to the brutal repressions as Jews were in the 1930s but thinks that the extreme agitation against Muslims, bears resemblance to hatred against Jews. This is an important clarification. I ask you to keep it in mind. She says (unauthorized translation) I have been in touch with ethnic minority youths, who are born and raised in Norway. Their greatest challenge is that they are frequently met with claims that they are not Norwegians. It ranges from discrimination at nightclubs, to always having to answer where they originally come from. They are met with different expectations based on prejudice, and many individual Muslims are being held collectively responsible for actions of all Muslims. She is careful to relate this to the job market in particular, that if you have a foreign sounding name, your chances of being called in for job interviews become very small. Lets analyze the various [...]

We are so terribly pained, we Norwegians. We cannot bring ourselves to believe this horror that took place. It was unimaginable. And it shook us out of the innocent belief that this could not take place here. What kind of beast could place a bomb in the heart of Oslo at a time when people prepare to go home after work? Or murder young kids who participated in a summer camp, full of fun, culture, music, friendship and political debate, each and every one of them putting their share’s worth towards constructing the society we all want? This horrific monster, I don’t even want to write his name – may it be erased from the surface of the earth – wanted to destroy our society, to replace it with dirt. I am very proud to see that the same kids who survived this tragedy dedicate themselves to love, to reconstruction, using the blessed memory of their friends who perished as fuel in order to go through this very painful moment. They are the promise for the future – they are our future. But I read comments that irritate. Some of them are too stupid to be taken seriously, such as [...]

No sooner did NIJ write about how loud moaning about sabotage, bureaucracy, failure to get the final certificates to set sail for Gaza in reality may be a poorly disguised attempt to not look utterly incapable and stupid when the organizers of the flotilla must call it off, then VG brings us the story on how the Norwegian participants now consider calling it a day. After a meeting in the Norwegian delegation, MP Aksel Hagen (SV) confirms that the Norwegians now are considering to call off the flotilla. - Everybody understands that we cannot sit around here for many days to wait for some clarification. It is better that we retreat for now, and make a new attempt at a later stage, says Hagen. - The cause is also not served with us being stuck here for days on end, he says. Although no doubt a useful excuse for failed flotilla sailors, their claim that Greece has relinquished its autonomy to decide if ships may sail or not, sounds surprisingly naive given the particular turmoil Greece finds itself in these days. Are the Gaza activists to removed from reality that they fail to grasp the severity of the financial and [...]

It seems like a poor joke, but it has taken the Amnesty International all of 5 years to address this ongoing crime against humanity in any serious way. Today, making the 5th anniversary since his capture, the General Secretary of AI in Israel, Rachel Benziman said: “We hope that Gilad soon returns to his family. Until his release, Hamas is obliged [to fulfill] its obligation of ensuring that Gilad is granted personal contact and to provide him with the rights he is entitled to under international law. As such, Hamas must allow representatives of the Red Cross to visit [him].” Further, the J’post article also stated: To mark the fifth year of Schalit’s captivity, the organization said in a press release, Amnesty is circulating a petition to its activists worldwide demanding that Hamas ease the suffering of Gilad and his family. The petition will be presented to Hamas prime minister in Gaza Ismail Haniyeh. Curious to see if this is being picked up by AI around the world I had a look at different AI sites, quite disappointing actually: AI in the UK has no mention of this, and using their own search engine yields 4 previous entries, only one of them [...]

Aside from the polite protest from Norwegian politicians in the wake of Libyan massacre, no public person of interest here in Norway has stood up to call the bluff of some Arab leaders who will use the Palestinian cause in order to cover up for their own crimes at home. Hence, it is refreshing that UK PM Cameron is not afraid of causing controversy. In a Jerusalem Post article he is quoted to have said to a conference in Qatar that: “in too many countries in the Middle East, some rulers say to their people ‘be angry about that, don’t be angry about the fact that you live in a non-open society,’” But he also takes a stab at the way European countries have showered the region with money, without ensuring that true reform came out of it as a result: Future aid to the region must be conditional on more political openness. Europe has given a huge amount to these countries. It hasn’t really insisted on proper conditions,” “We have seen far too much money disappearing into a great big black hole. This is a wake-up call for the European Union to look at the aid that it gives. It’s not acceptable [...]

If it was not so terribly tragic, I might have had a good laugh. All those politically correct, caught pants down. Sadly, there is no cause for joy, far too many Libyans are dead, mowed down in this weeks latest show of evil, or at other times, such as for instance the 1200 inmates at the Abu Salim massacre in 1996. European countries, and no doubt Norway among them, continue to bend backwards to please the mad dictator. Advanced weapons, planes, ships, the more the better, or to quote Libyan opposition activist Guma El-Gamaty on BBC Hard Talk it has been “annoying” and “distressing” to see Western countries doing business with Libya in recent years, in effect propping up the Gaddafi regime. Norway has many business interests in Libya. The decorative paint and coating giant Jotun, Yara, the fertilizer giant, of which the Norwegian state owns just over a third, and Statoil (no introduction required) where the state is majority stakeholder. It is of course no crime to invest in developing countries, but how the State can live with itself knowing that it is accumulating more wealth from blood money from Libya is mindboggling Right now the world awaits the [...]

In an unprecedented press statement the HRW faults the PA for not dealing with cases of torture. As we frequently aim our guns at the HRW’s very selective approach towards the ME conflict, I would just want to applaud this rare display of impartiality, of seriously investigating and condemning serious breaches of human, civic rights also when committed by the PA (or Hamas for that matter). Now, isn’t it funny that this piece just cannot be found in any Norwegian paper today? I wonder how long before it appears, if ever it does. It should in the very least be made known to our FM and our minister of aid and development to know that our tax money goes towards undermining the rights and freedoms of the Palestinians. Prof. M.
While we await the outcome – short term as well as long term – of the ongoing drama in Egypt, you may find it interesting to take 30 minutes to listen to the BBC radio documentary File on 4 Tolerating the Intolerant? Whilst not relating particularly to the unrest in Egypt – nor to the Norway – Israel relationship which is the main axis of this particular blog – it depicts a rather chilling scenario where increasingly extremist views in some Muslim countries may be reflected in these countries’ growing ex-pat communities in the UK (but also rest of Europe). Amid increasing attempts in Norwegian media to find the Israel angle through which to understand the crisis in Egypt, coupled with a naive view that any change must per definition be positive, this program outlines some very troubling scenarios if we continue to pretend that the world would come to rest if we just continue to make obeisance to thugs. Little Red Riding Hood was almost eaten up by the wolf that pretended to be her loving grandma, lets not be so gullible that we think that jockeying for position in Egypt is the same as the velvet revolution of [...]

As the riots in Egypt reach day 7 and no signs of any of the parts yielding to pressure, media outlets around the world seem to be in the mood for a little fantasy, to stoke the flames of discontent and perhaps up the circulation. Al Jazeera claims that Israel has sent anti-riot gear to Cairo to help contain the demonstration, not surprisingly offering any proof at all for this, but then again – Al Jazeera never was too bothered telling the truth… But to see Norwegian media buying into Al Jazeera style journalism is depressing… Today, most online papers have one take or other on Haaretz story that Netanyahu allegedly is calling for the world to support Mubarak, the source for Haaretz being an unnamed official. However, the Haaretz story puts this alleged call for support in a specific context: a power vacuum in Egypt is very dangerous for the whole region. The message from Israel is to preserve stability. Nobody in their right mind would suggest that abandoning ship to leave it to the knife wielding mob that attacked a hospital in any way would contribute to stability. Throughout the day, various versions of Israel’s call for stability [...]
