Here’s to press freedom in Norway – the Labour affiliated Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions has been doing its Christmas shopping, most of the Norwegian media is now on their hands. I am sure they will prove to be more flexible bosses than Murdoch. Perhaps something like Hugo Chavez? Lifted from Bigpeace.com Here’s The Observer’s translation from Aftenposten: When LO controls the newspapers By Jon Kristiansen A-pressen recently acquired Edda Media, and with this latest acquisition will be the biggest proprietor of local newspapers in Norway, excluding the big regional newspapers in the larger cities. From a strict industrial perspective this is a sound business strategy; in light of the future that the media in Norway is facing, with a handful of big media conglomerates. But this is not in itself the main problem. The big question is whether the large trade unions and the political establishment are going to be allowed to dictate the agenda of Norwegian local newspapers, and in addition how this influence will affect the various local democracies A-pressen is today owned by Telenor (36 percent) and Fritt ord (3 percent), with LO [largest Norwegian labour union] along with other various trade unions owning the remaining 61 [...]

Erling Rimehaug seems to be the only editor who has taken Dagbladet to task on its decision to publish Finn Graffs offensive drawing. After an extensive search in online newspapers I have been unable to find other comments. That reflects poorly on the wider media to acknowledge that the red line is routinely crossed when it comes to coverage of Israel and a denial that growth in anti-Semitic incidents in Norway may have anything at all to do with how the press covers Israel. Nevertheless, Rimehaug’s rejection of Dagbladets use of Nazi imagery to illustrate their view on Israel, is correct and welcomed (unauthorized translation): Israel is taunted by Nazi label Does Dagbladet really think that Israel deserves the Nazi label on the day they set free hundreds of Palestinian refugees? Dagbladet presented yesterday on page 3 a sober analysis of the prisoner exchange – where Gilad Shalit was set free in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. This event was illustrated with a drawing by Finn Graff, where Gaza was cast as the German concentration camp Buchenwald. You can say what you want about Israel’s policies against Palestinians. But to compare it with the Nazi extermination policy, is so far [...]

An article by Vårt Land, explores not only the shock and disgust among Norwegian Jews, but also that of other editors, including Jahn Otto Johansen, the former (and formidable) editor in chief of Dagbladet. Norwegian Jews think Dagbladet demonizes Israel Norwegian Jews react with shock and disgust to a drawing that compares Israel to Nazi Germany Martin Eikeland martin.eikeland@vl.no The cartoonist Finn Graff has caused angry reactions. On the day when 1,027 Palestinian prisoners were released from Israeli prisons in exchange for release of soldier Gilad Shalit, Dagbladet published a drawing in which Graff uses the same insignia as the Nazis used for the Buchenwald concentration camp, “Jedem das Seine”. Freely translated it means something like “Everyone gets what they deserve.” - This is distasteful and is lacking in understanding of history. This is a clear violation. This is demonization, writes Erwin Kohn in a letter to the editor. He is the leader of the Jewish community in Oslo. - It is difficult to understand Graff’s agenda in a manner other than that he wants to stick the Nazi stamp on Israel, [...]

MIFF (With Israel for Peace) reports on its home pages that young communists harassed MIFF members and stole an Israeli flag at a recent rally in Trondheim. This is the second time in a short time, that young communists harass and attack a MIFF stand and tries to shut down a lawful public meeting, and the umpteenth time that the same sorry sods fail to understand what it means to live in a democracy, namely that everybody has a right to express thoughts, opinions and political beliefs. But then again, communism and democracy were always opposite concepts, and all communist states have failed miserably in providing anything that resembles equality, or freedom to their unfortunate underlings. Notwithstanding, these brats with severe behavioral issues, who have enjoyed every freedom the Norwegian democracy can offer, have taken it upon themselves to decide who can and who cannot express their opinions, and resort to harassment, physical threats and thieving in order to show their gratitude for the freedoms they have enjoyed. MIFF members in Trondheim start to feel very uncomfortable with this situation and consider requesting police protection next time they arrange a rally. The matter has been reported to the police who [...]

This appears to be the opinion of the editor of Universitetsavisa, Tore Oksholen. In an oped posted today, he laments that many researchers post 22/7 feel that they are being harassed into silence. See below for an unauthorized translation. As somebody who is intimately familiar with the Norwegian scientific community, may I be so blunt as to say that this rings very hollow. Typically, researchers in the exact sciences have very little time, or even interest in, getting involved in academic boycott proposals or other abuse of the privilege of being a scientist at our top academic institutions. This has created a false impression for others in less exacting academic fields, that they somehow have a free pass to pretend they own the Truth and use the institutions to propel whatever fancy ideas they wish. I was once present at a refereeing committee meeting for a Norwegian scientific journal. That was a very strange experience where surprising comments with no relevance to the article in question appeared to be the norm. The weirdest thing was that even after the meeting, snipe remarks were traded, cheaply, and brought a very toxic effect into the lab afterwards – two research colleagues clashed [...]

Christian and I have received a bit of stick lately, for wanting to keep inflammatory comments to a minimum and avoid being tarnished as Islamophobic bigots or xenophobes by people who are so frightened by dissent that they narrow the field for everybody. Does that mean we should shut down the blog and throw away the key, or even that we are nervous wrecks who at the slightest resistance keel over and succumb to self-censorship? Hardly. The scope of this blog is quite narrow, it examines the relationship between Norway’s – and therefore Norwegians’ relationship – with the Jews, here in Norway and everywhere else in the world, and the State of Israel. This relationship is very strange, whereas – in Norwegian mainstream society – our difficulties in relating to the Jewish people is viewed in an upside-down binocular view, anything relating to Israel is blown out of all proportions. We examine both of these aspects under the microscopic lens, at the highest magnification! I have no doubt that we must be an annoying bug in the soup for many. I can only deduce from comments read in the press that the Jewish community would be happy if we could [...]

Cecilie Hellestvet, researcher at the International Law and Policy Institute was interviewed by Vårt Lands Astrid Dalehaug Nordheim on August 4. At a time when many a Norwegian practices self censorship or feels intimidated by politically correct press in the wake of the horrors of July 22, she has some very wise things to say (Unauthorized translation and transcription) It is probably easier to be labeled as an extremist in Norway than in other democratic countries, says researcher Cecilie Hellestveit. She is our next guest in our series of interviews: How to confront the extremists? One may not deviate very far off the Norwegian, political consensus in order to be labeled an extremist, says Hellestveit. – What is an extremist point of view ? – There are two characteristics of an extremist point of view: the contents of said opinion lies at the margins of what the public opinion accepts as a description of reality. The other deals with how the view is presented, and a reluctance of behalf of the person who holds said views, to consider other interpretations of reality Hellestveit has lived in other countries. She thinks Norwegians are conspicuously united in the big questions. – The lack [...]

We are so terribly pained, we Norwegians. We cannot bring ourselves to believe this horror that took place. It was unimaginable. And it shook us out of the innocent belief that this could not take place here. What kind of beast could place a bomb in the heart of Oslo at a time when people prepare to go home after work? Or murder young kids who participated in a summer camp, full of fun, culture, music, friendship and political debate, each and every one of them putting their share’s worth towards constructing the society we all want? This horrific monster, I don’t even want to write his name – may it be erased from the surface of the earth – wanted to destroy our society, to replace it with dirt. I am very proud to see that the same kids who survived this tragedy dedicate themselves to love, to reconstruction, using the blessed memory of their friends who perished as fuel in order to go through this very painful moment. They are the promise for the future – they are our future. But I read comments that irritate. Some of them are too stupid to be taken seriously, such as [...]

No sooner did NIJ write about how loud moaning about sabotage, bureaucracy, failure to get the final certificates to set sail for Gaza in reality may be a poorly disguised attempt to not look utterly incapable and stupid when the organizers of the flotilla must call it off, then VG brings us the story on how the Norwegian participants now consider calling it a day. After a meeting in the Norwegian delegation, MP Aksel Hagen (SV) confirms that the Norwegians now are considering to call off the flotilla. - Everybody understands that we cannot sit around here for many days to wait for some clarification. It is better that we retreat for now, and make a new attempt at a later stage, says Hagen. - The cause is also not served with us being stuck here for days on end, he says. Although no doubt a useful excuse for failed flotilla sailors, their claim that Greece has relinquished its autonomy to decide if ships may sail or not, sounds surprisingly naive given the particular turmoil Greece finds itself in these days. Are the Gaza activists to removed from reality that they fail to grasp the severity of the financial and [...]

It takes a very special kind of man to attack a disabled person merely for expressing himself. It takes a very special kind of police to refer to such an attack as a “stunt” – carried out by the victim of the attack, the disabled person. Kafka has commented on this incident already. Here is a translation from a newspaper article on the incident. Translated from Drammens Tidende article “Celebration of Bin Laden’s death provoked“, by journalist Alexander Jansen. A ruckus broke out at the Bragernes square as a senior citizen in a wheelchair angered several young men of foreign extraction this evening. At about 3pm on Wednesday, police were requested as a senior citizen in a motorized wheelchair, described as an acquaintance of the police, had provoked the anger of another man in downtown Drammen. The reason for this scene was the wheelchair bound man having several placards of and flags on his motorized wheelchair, to celebrate the death of Osama bin Laden, while driving around the square. This did not receive positive welcomes by one or several young men of foreign extraction, who reacted angrily on the celebration. “A man was strongly provoked by the celebration, leading to [...]

In our secret lair, us operatives in the well-appointed Norwegian field office of the Zionist conspiracy didn’t have much time (nor, for that matter the inclination) to celebrate the well-deserved death of Osama bin-Laden, but apparently an elderly gentleman in Drammen felt otherwise. He mounted a few flags on his powered wheelchair and drove down to the town center (pictures in the article). According to the local newspaper, a gang of youth “of foreign extraction” (must have been one of those gangs of roaming Swedes) didn’t take kindly to this sentiment and attacked the wheelchair, smashing one of the windows. Three police cruisers rushed to the scene and escorted the man all the way home, away from the scene. Just to be on the safe side, they confiscated an Israeli flag attached to the wheelchair. But apparently returned it later. Commenting on the episode, the police said the elderly, disabled man was well-known to the police, and they expected this wouldn’t be his “last stunt.” The police noted that neither the old man nor the young men planned to file any charges. And the police certainly weren’t inclined to pursue things further. (The police didn’t elaborate what legal grievance the [...]
