We return to the developing saga of the Norwegian debate on circumcision, and while I take the view that in the name of preventative medicine, i.e. to keep the small, but nevertheless realistic risks of something going wrong under control, it is a good thing that the Ministry of Health has tabled a proposal that circumcision of boys should be done at a hospital and by adequately trained personnel. Personally, I am not convinced that the procedure has to be carried out at a hospital, what with MRSA infested surgeries that would pose an even greater health risk, plus not to say the unnecessary use of surgeries that probably could be put to better use, for instance, giving cancer patients adequate treatment all over the country? But the idea of adequately trained personnel is one that is central at least in Jewish practice, and although I only have a patchy understanding of Muslim practices with regards to circumcision, I would like to see the Muslim mother who gladly would give up her son to a brutal butcher? Jews and Muslims alike, have always regarded personal hygiene as their strongest weapon against disease. For the act of circumcision, the Jews rely [...]

When focus is narrowly on Norways relationship with the Jews and Israel, a false impression that Muslims and Jews tear out each other throats on the streets of Norway, can be made. While undoubtedly there have been some serious anti-Semitic incidents by Muslims, famously the Khaybar war cry in January 2009, for the most part, and in particular on the institutional level, Jews and Muslims collaborate on many issues of common interest. Here in one example of said collaboration, from fritanke.no Jews and Muslims: We cannot live with a ban on circumcision Strong reactions in the wake of Humanist Society resolutions - Many people say this is akin to introducing another Jewish paragraph [referral to article in our National Constitution which banned Jews entry to the realm, this was overturned thanks to the efforts of Henrik Wergeland in 1851] ,said the leader of the Jewish congregation Ervin Kohn. - Ignorant and intolerant, says Mehtab Afsar of the Islamic Council. Afsar emphasize that circumcision is very important for Muslims, and shake his head over Fritanke.no suggestion that one may carry out circumcision as a symbolic symbolically without actually doing the procedure. - It is absolutely unthinkable. The idea is pretty crazy and shows about the lack of knowledge about our religion. Muslims have been performing circumcision since religion began. It is a very important part of Islam. It is not something we can just choose to quit, says Afsar. - What do you think the Norwegian Muslims will do if such a ban should beadopted? - One thing is for sure, this practice is so central to Islam that Muslims are not going to stop it. I fear that [...]

Anti-Semitism ROCKET ATTACKS-LEGITIMATE AND NECESSARY Trond Ali Linstad Summary. Norwegian convert to Islam, Trond Ali Linstad, writes on his own blog, Koranen.no on the necessity of firing rockets at Israel- after all they are colonialists and all adult Israelis are in the military reserve. Legitimate target, courtesy Trond Ali Linstad. Trond Ali Linstad (born 1942) is a former Marxist/Maoist, and now a leading proponent of Islam in Norway. Mr. Linstad started and managed Norway’s first and only Muslim private school which was closed in 2004, after parents and teachers objected to the pedagogical quality there. Mr. Linstad also calls for destruction of Israel as a whole, regardless of the persons killed are Jews, Muslims, Christians, or members of other faiths.
Aside from the robust condemnation from our FM, media coverage of the attack on the Israeli embassy in Cairo has been low scale. In a weekend where the worlds attention is tuned to events in New York and nationally, focus on municipal elections take the front seat. That is perhaps a good thing, but nevertheless, I wonder why there is no indepth analysis as to why the Egyptians think they will build a better future for themselves by destroying the Israeli embassy. Some papers have made fleeting mention of the perceived poor treatment of Gaza Palestinians as the driving factor. This is an insult to Egyptians and Israelis alike. Such simplifications not only dehumanize the Egyptians, but also prevents any deeper analysis as to why Egyptians, who feel that the democratization process is going too slow, and who may feel that the military who now governs the country have been a little hard handed in enforcing the law, with more than 68.000 imprisoned post Mubarak – automatically want to gut Israel? Why are we not debating these very dangerous aspects of Muslim anti-Semitism, which do nothing to encourage Israel to “be sensible and give the Palestinians what they want” Scenes [...]

The editor of Minervanett.no, Nils August Andresen, has published further thoughts on the controversial age-limit for circumcision as proposed by our Children’s Ombudsman. Poor choices on behalf of children? By: Nils August Andresen – 9. september, 2011 12 kommentarer Ombudsman says in its response to circumcision of boys that his duty as Ombudsman for Children sometimes is to make adults dissatisfied. But he overestimates his ability to speak on children’s behalf. First: We thank the Child Ombudsman Reidar Hjermann for giving us the same. The debate is important both in principle and in practice. I feel however that my criticisms of the Ombudsman’s proposal largely unanswered. The Ombudsman writes that there is no proposed ban, only an age limit. This is a special allegation that is not in accordance with normal legal understanding. After this definition is also no prohibition against violence against children, they could even beat themselves when they become 16 years. The Ombudsman has proposed that it should be illegal for parents to choose circumcision for their children. It is always precisely this practice that has been the question, and this practice one now is seeking to prohibit. This is a ban, and the people who by such a ban, would be banned from doing what [...]

Christian and I have received a bit of stick lately, for wanting to keep inflammatory comments to a minimum and avoid being tarnished as Islamophobic bigots or xenophobes by people who are so frightened by dissent that they narrow the field for everybody. Does that mean we should shut down the blog and throw away the key, or even that we are nervous wrecks who at the slightest resistance keel over and succumb to self-censorship? Hardly. The scope of this blog is quite narrow, it examines the relationship between Norway’s – and therefore Norwegians’ relationship – with the Jews, here in Norway and everywhere else in the world, and the State of Israel. This relationship is very strange, whereas – in Norwegian mainstream society – our difficulties in relating to the Jewish people is viewed in an upside-down binocular view, anything relating to Israel is blown out of all proportions. We examine both of these aspects under the microscopic lens, at the highest magnification! I have no doubt that we must be an annoying bug in the soup for many. I can only deduce from comments read in the press that the Jewish community would be happy if we could [...]

A group of prominent North American Muslims has called on Hamas to release Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. I applaud this noble initiative and invite Norwegian groups to follow suit: August 26, 2011 Dear Mr. Mashal: We write to you during this holy month of Ramadan as Muslim-American leaders and scholars across the United States. As Muslims around the world reflect upon their faith and strive for an elevated level of devotion during this blessed month, we urge you to act upon our higher calling to charity and compassion by releasing Israeli Corporal Gilad Shalit. We believe Hamas’ harsh treatment and five-year detention of Shalit is wrong. On many occasions Hamas has stated its opposition to unjust imprisonment. It has said that Israel’s detention of thousands of Palestinians, including women and children who have been held for months or years, sometimes in harsh conditions or without access to genuine due process, is unjust. As Muslims we are guided by the tradition of the Prophet (peace be upon him). He teaches us to follow a higher ethical and moral code, and to set an example ofjustice and mercy, even against enemies and prisoners of war. In Surat Fussilat, Ayah 34, we are [...]

Just as we have spotted, translated and uploaded stories where Lars Gule seems to have got the wrong end of the stick with regards to Judaism, Israel, we must be equally quick to do ditto when he takes a principled stance, and confronts some aspects of Islam that many find troublesome. Vårt Land has an article on how Gule clashed with Muslims at a recent meeting organized by Islam Net, a Muslim organization in Oslo Unauthorized translation of excerpt of the Vårt Land story: Right to build churches. You shall have the right to build mosques here, but where is your support for Christian’s right to build churches in Muslim countries. Where is i your support for the right to Christian proselytizing?, asked Gule. Gule pointed to the segregation of sexes, where women were relegated to the upstairs, as an example of what he meant is pure suppression. During the coffee break he was robustly confronted by a young Muslim woman. We are free. We are all free women. We have chosen this ourselves, and participate as equals. Islam honors women and ensures gender equality, the women pointed out, only to earn another salvo from Gule: – There were slaves [...]

Norway – or to be very precise and specific – main stream Norwegian media have quoted Norwegian vice ministers, leading members of our cultural elite, party congresses that dream of bombing Israel, call for Israel boycotts and buy permission to bomb Libya against a promise to bomb Israel.
The leader of Høyre, Erna Solberg has said in an interview with VG that Muslims in todays Norway are being treated like the Norwegian Jews were treated in the 1930s. To be very fair (and this is of fundamental importance in todays Norway), she has underlined that Muslims today are not subject to the brutal repressions as Jews were in the 1930s but thinks that the extreme agitation against Muslims, bears resemblance to hatred against Jews. This is an important clarification. I ask you to keep it in mind. She says (unauthorized translation) I have been in touch with ethnic minority youths, who are born and raised in Norway. Their greatest challenge is that they are frequently met with claims that they are not Norwegians. It ranges from discrimination at nightclubs, to always having to answer where they originally come from. They are met with different expectations based on prejudice, and many individual Muslims are being held collectively responsible for actions of all Muslims. She is careful to relate this to the job market in particular, that if you have a foreign sounding name, your chances of being called in for job interviews become very small. Lets analyze the various [...]

There must be many of us who are struggling to reconcile conflicting feelings about having a wildly multicultural society thrust upon us. I am equally sure that many of those who feel that more time is needed in order to integrate the immigrants into the wider community AS WELL AS preparing the ground in the native community to be accepting of not one, not two, but many different cultures at the same time – do not even for a second entertain the idea of murdering the newcomers. Or, as it is important to underline in these very difficult days, certainly not butcher kids at a summer camp, or workers on their way home from work, even if one may feel that the political platform of a particular political party is somewhat removed from ones own ideas and aspirations. Whereas it is a natural inclination in the wake of a massive tragedy as the one that has hit Norway, to tread more carefully, to avoid inflaming sentiments, even to avoid confrontations on certain aspects of our society until we are ready for such debates, it is not wise, as our former PM Jagland has done, to go out and warn other [...]

Bruce Bawer is an American citizen residing in Oslo. He sees, and not without reason, trouble looming ahead. Read the entire piece on Ruthfully Yours. Notice how the author calls the police for assistance only to hear that they won’t be able to respond to his call for days. Mr. Bawer is not the only citizen of Oslo to have heard this. The police do an excellent job, but they are stretched thin on the ground. In times such as these, many of us have no choice but to fall back on our own resources – pray that they are sufficient and stick up for your fellow man. Excerpt below: First, you need to know that Oslo is a sprawling, low-lying city, more of a small-scale Los Angeles than a small-scale New York. Out on its eastern flank is a large valley called Groruddalen which, a few years ago, was a sleepy mishmash of industry and suburban apartment blocks. It is now quickly becoming an urban center all its own. It is said that if current trends continue, Groruddalen will, within a couple of decades, dwarf downtown Oslo itself as a population center. One not-so-little detail: the reason for Groruddalen’s [...]

A great troubadour, perhaps the last of his kind, was brutally shot and murdered in Guatemala City this morning. Facundo Cabral, a stellar performer in all of the Americas, but also in Israel and other Middle Eastern countries and in Africa, was declared a world messenger of peace by UNESCO in 1996. Hit hard by life – he survived terminal cancer, suffered diabetes and was blind, needing a cane for walking, and who lost his wife and baby daughter in a plane crash in 1978 – his graceful attitude to life was one of love; I love life so much because it cost me so much to enjoy it. From the cradle to the grave is a school, so if what we call problems are lessons, we see life differently.” His trademark opening to his shows – world wide – would be his philosophical interpretations and variations over the theme lech lecha, or, ‘go for you’, which sent Abraham away from his father’s home to become the founder of three of the worlds greatest religions, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, as a prologue to his most beloved song, No Soy de Aqui. Farewell, beloved friend, now you are an eternal star. linkscolor [...]

Norwegians who read Dagbladets book review of Halvor Tjønns book “Muhammed” will by now probably understand the extreme gravity of the placard in the 2009 Gaza demonstration that turned into a pogrom in Oslo. Several placards had the words Khaybar, Khaybar, ya yahoud, jaish Muhammad saufa ya’ud” painted on them. This means “Khaybar, Khaybar, oh Jews, Muhammeds army shall return” The journalist and historian Halvor Tjønn has taken it upon himself to carefully retell the history of the man Muhammed as written down by contemporaries and historians in the first few generations after Muhammed. For this painstaking work, Tjønn has been disowned by his own newspaper, Aftenposten, where the in house book critic had a particularly nasty fit of sarcasms (Dagsavisen was no better, but they are not Tjønns employer). But Dagbladet seems to have grown a pair of xxxxs overnight (either that or they are trying to recover from a historic low sales volume), and not only has allowed their book critic to have a go, but also printed it. Arne Dvergsdal, the in house book critic at Dagbladet, does not mince words: For the uninitiated, this is a shocking read about a brutal and vengeful despot. The darkest chapter is [...]
