Yesterday we published the ynetnews.com’s version of Manfred Gerstenfeld’s oped article “Insanity and Demonization”. Now it turns out that the same article has also been published in the New York based, Jewish Press, both in print and electronic; Sane and Insane in Norway, the latter being slightly longer than the ynet version. The printed Jewish Press has a weekly circulation of approximately 50 000, whilst I have been unable to find the number of individual readers of the online version. But it does not stop there – the same article has also been made available in French, Italian German (will appear tomorrow), and Hebrew (not online, in Makor Rishon. So perhaps the powers that be in our current government will start to appreciate the speed at which our very own hate fest against Israel, rapidly can turn against us and make us look real bad in the eyes of the world? linkscolor = "000000"; highlightscolor = "888888"; backgroundcolor = "FFFFFF"; channel = "none";

Insanity and demonization. Op-ed: Aftermath of Norway massacre raises questions about terror, anti-Israel feelings. Manfred Gerstenfeld Last month, two court-appointed forensic psychiatrists concluded that ideological mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik – who killed 77 Norwegians in July – is mentally insane. Other experts disagree. One poll found that 48% of Norwegians believe that he has no severe psychiatric disorder. Breivik himself was insulted by the claim of insanity. However, many more questions should be raised internationally. One is: If Breivik is declared schizophrenic, can anyone who commits extreme violent acts, based on “ideology,” be considered normal? There are answers to this question elsewhere. The Venezuelan terrorist Ilich Ramirez Sanchez – better known as “Carlos the Jackal” – sits out a life sentence in a French jail. Mohammed Bouyeri’s Muslim worldview led him to murder Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh in 2004. He received a life sentence in The Netherlands. The question about the mental sanity of terrorists should be posed primarily in the Muslim world. How many of those who killed and mutilated thousands of civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan are normal? The same question is valid concerning the tens of millions of Jihadi Muslims and their spiritual guides who support [...]

Dr. Manfred Gerstenfeld has published an extensive essay on anti-Israelism and anti-Semitism in Western schools. It is well researched and well documented and gives concrete examples from various countries in Europe. Below I have copied in some selected examples from Norway. It seems we are merely copying other countries, but in some areas upping the ante and trying to outdo the others. Sadly we seem to excel at it. You can read the whole essay here. Anti-Semitism and anti-Israelism in schools or places related to them are significant problems in a number of Western countries. A third related topic concerns Holocaust education in a variety of European schools. When such education is part of the curriculum in some schools, problems may emerge with students. The few reports available on some key aspects of these topics all concern single countries. In the United States and France, textbooks have been studied. In the Netherlands, Belgium, and Norway, polls are available on some aspects of anti-Semitism in schools. Programs to combat anti-Semitism in schools have been developed in the Netherlands and Canada. Systematic research is required on a number of subjects. These concern, first, the neutrality of textbooks and curricula. The second aspect [...]

Op-Ed: The Hierarchy of Murder Promoters By Manfred Gerstenfeld The logical approach to the issue of attributing ideological responsibilities for inciting to kill should start with those who make the strongest direct calls for murder. The horrific murders committed by Norwegian Anders Breivik on 22 July led to huge debates in many countriesabout who has laid the ideological infrastructure for his crimes. In his lengthy treatise he quoted a large number ofsources. There seemed thus to be many potentialcandidates to blame. Numerous commentators did so gladly. The accused included people who have never called for violence, such as for instance Dutch anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders and the author Bat Yeor who coined the term “Eurabia.” Both had strongly condemned the Breivik murders. Another accused was Robert Spencer of the Jihad Watch blog who mentioned Norwegian sourcesblaming him and others for instigating the murders. This debate should have been at most marginal in a far broader context. The logical approach to the issue of attributing ideological responsibilities for inciting to kill should start with those who make the strongest direct calls for murder. The dominant environment for people with such world views is in a number of Muslim societies. According to a study in 2009 by the Pew [...]

The state terrorism myth Op-ed: Arab leaders falsely accuse Israel of state terrorism to hide their own crimes Manfred Gerstenfeld Threatening its own civilians is a traditional mode of state terrorism in parts of the Muslim world. A second type of state terrorism – the murderous one – has recently increased significantly. A few among many examples: On July 11th, Syrian soldiers shot and killed 10 participants in a funeral procession in the town of Homs. During the funeral of Kurdish leader Mashaal Tammo on October 8th in Qamishli, Syrian security forces fired indiscriminately at the crowd and killed five mourners and wounded three. A day later, 24 Copts were killed by Egyptian security forces in Cairo and more than 100 were wounded. One can add many more examples of homicidal state terrorism, including in Libya or Yemen. The principle remains the same: Arab government forces not only threaten their own civilians, but also kill them intentionally. A third type of state terrorism is trying to murder foreign civilians abroad. Recent examples were the planned attacks on the Saudi ambassador and the Israeli embassy in Washington, both ordered by Iran. Murderous state terrorism has extremely vicious precedents. In 1982, the [...]

This article was published in Norwegian on the ICEJ website in Norwegian, we have got the English version to share with you. Although the article does not specifically mention Norway, it is sadly true that all of these serious shortcomings in professionalism is a hallmark of Norwegian medias attitude towards Israel. A very recent example, the would be suicide bomber Wafa A-Biss, who was released yesterday as part of the prisoner swap for Gilad Shalit, is busy today poisoning Gaza’s children’s minds, encouraging not only terrorism, but in effect asking the kids to kill themselves. Not a pip in Norwegian main stream media. If a settler as much as sneezes, we get the camera crews with idle minded reporters on tow to cover the event… Mainstream Double Standards against Israel Manfred Gerstenfeld The use of double standards against Israel has permeated large parts of the world’s mainstream. One finds this phenomenon at the United Nations and many of its affiliates, among governments including Western ones, in major media – of which the BBC is the one best investigated, academic institutions, NGO’s, liberal churches and so on. The definition of a double standard is rather simple. The Cambridge Dictionaries online put [...]

23 Aug 2011, Jerusalem Post (not published online, but can be seen on Jpost e-paper) Revising the truth Sir, – In his recent Jerusalem Post op-ed (“Norway is proPalestinian – and pro-Israeli,” Opinion & Features, August 18), the Norwegian ambassador in Tel Aviv, Svein Sevje, continues to revise the truth by claiming that his government follows a pro-Israel policy. He should have limited himself to thanking Israel for the outpouring of sympathy for Norway after the despicable murders by Anders Breivik. The expression of Israeli empathy was all the more impressive since after this tragic incident, hate-mongering directed at Israel by mainstream Norwegian society came again to the fore. Even if the Middle East had only one item on its agenda, the AUT camp at Utoya where Breivik murdered many could be characterized as an anti-Israel hate camp. More information has since become available regarding how “successful” the demonization of Israel was at Utoya. When Breivik started firing, some youngsters thought it was a demonstration of how Israeli soldiers shoot at Palestinian civilians. When I first read this story by German journalist Ulrich Sahm, it seemed unbelievable. I thereupon contacted Sahm, and he provided me with several sources for his story. [...]

Just over a week ago, Vårt Land ran an article on the Jewish community in Oslo, and how they disagree with foreign criticism with regards to Norway’s relationship with Israel and the Jews. Now Vårt Land has given Gerstenfeld right of reply, of sorts, but editing his rebuttal (with the paragraphs that were edited away in parenthesis): Anti-Israelism in Norway Manfred Gerstenfeld Terror The despicable murders by Anders Breivik have shocked many Israelis. Empathy with Norway has not only been shown by Israel’s president, prime minister and the government, but also by many Israeli citizens. Those with Norwegian friends have probably, like me, expressed their sympathy to them directly. The huge publicity surrounding the murders has also drawn major attention to the highly negative attitudes of parts of the Norwegian political and cultural elite toward Israel. This has been aggravated by the Norwegian Ambassador in Tel Aviv Svein Sevje Different kinds of terror. In an interview with the Israeli daily Maariv he is quoted as seeing a fundamental difference between anti-Norwegian terror and Palestinian terror against Israel. Deputy Minister Espen Bjarth Eide claims that Sevje was misquoted, yetMaariv has not published any correction. (The Jerusalem Post was also very critical of Norway [...]

Why do you think this is? Gerstenfeld: Norway is ruled by persons who are totally unfamiliar with the concept of self-criticism. They do not ask themselves: “Who am I, what shall I do, what are my values,” I’ve worked in 20 western countries and can say: Many Norwegian journalists are of such low level, that I have not seen the likes of it anywhere else.
Following the campaign to demonize or otherwise exclude those with a more critical view on Norway and her reluctance to owe up to, and deal with our particular tendency to nourish anti-Israel sentiments to such an extent it becomes “good old anti-Semitism”, we now seems to be on the receiving end of the stick: Norway and Anti-Semitism Manfred Gerstenfeld, August 16, 2011 A huge international debate has developed around who is responsible for influencing the thoughts of the despicable Norwegian mass murderer, Anders Breivik. His acts have also generated much unusual international publicity about Norway. This is therefore an appropriate time to investigate another type of Norwegian hate mongering: the major anti-Semitism and anti-Israelism there. There are many indications that anti-Semitism, partly manifesting itself as anti-Israelism, is widespread in Norway – which has less than 2,000 Jews. Many acts of anti-Semitism and anti-Israelism occur in this country with a population of less than 5 million. In June this year, a quantitative study was published on racism and anti-Semitism in Oslo high schools. It was the first official report on an aspect of anti-Semitism in Norway. The study revealed that one third of Jewish children were physically or verbally harassed at [...]

Jpost is much more generous with Norwegian ambassadors posted in Israel, than Norwegian media is with Israeli diplomates posted in Norway, and has awarded our ambassador with generous press space for him to put across his points of view (which should be interpreted as the Official Norwegian Point of View) Is it only my imaginations, or is he really criticizing foreigners right to have an opinion on Norway post-22/7? Norway – or to be very precise and specific – main stream Norwegian media have quoted Norwegian vice ministers, leading members of our cultural elite, party congresses that dream of bombing Israel, call for Israel boycotts and buy permission to bomb Libya against a promise to bomb Israel. At no stage has there been any concern for the pain and mourning felt in Israel and anybody who has tried to suggest that maybe rhetoric should be more muted, has been brushed away with claims that a good friend is one who will confront a friend with his or her “wrong doing”. Sevje should think about the double standards he seems to get involved in. Likewise, the claim that Israel shot and killed unarmed demonstrators on the Golan heights remains controversial, we [...]

In the course of the last few days we have debated back and forth whether or not foreigners can opine on Norwegian domestic matters. In relation to this, we have mentioned and commented on persons like Gerstenfeld, Dershowitz, Glick and others as if they were commodities, not real persons. Gerstenfeld has provided this comment, and I think it is only fair that he gets a say since he has become the hot piece of pastrami we are having this discussion over: I would like to point out to you that I have been subject to a huge demonization campaign in Norway in the past two and a half years. I cannot see why that should not be called anti-Semitism. 1) In March 2009, Fredrik Graesvik interviews me on TV2. He translates most of my text but then interjects himself which I have never said – that the Norwegians are “barbarians and unintellectual.” He knows that what I have really said is that Norway forbids Jewish ritual slaughter, but allows the cruel killing of whales, which really is barbaric. I added somewhere else in the hour-long conversation that the debate in my book on Norway was not intellectual. Graesvik manipulates this in [...]

The Christian daily Dagen, has followed up the interview with Kohn with a reply from Gerstenfeld: The Norwegian government takes lightly on anti-Israeli terror, and indirectly supports such terror. This is a double standard on behalf of the Norwegian cultural elite Norwegian double standards Chairman of the Oslo DMT claims in Dagen that I present a distorted picture of anti-Semitism in Norway. Last year I met his predecessor Anne Sender and several of her colleagues in the Oslo Jewish community building, to discuss Norwegian anti-Semitism. They did not succeed in refuting even one of my arguments and facts. Before the visit, I had offered DMT to give a free lecture to their members. They turned my offer down. If they believed that they could show in the debate that I was wrong, they should have accepted my offer. The second edition of my book in English “Behind the Humanitarian Mask, the Nordic Countries, Israel and the Jews” can now be downloaded at no cost from the internet. In the footnotes are the sources of the facts I mention, which are not what Kohn falsely claims: extremists. If he read my book Antisemmitismen I Norge he would see who spread the [...]

The Christian daily Dagen has picked up on the discussion between the Jewish community in Oslo, represented by its leader Erwin Kohn on the one hand, and Manfred Gerstenfeld. Important points of views in both articles – perhaps both help to clarify the greater picture, that Norway is far from the worst country in the world with regards to anti-Semitism, nor is it as innocent and humanistic as it likes to represent itself. As usual, the truth is probably to be found somewhere in the middle, but it is high time we deal with the serious problems Gerstenfeld, and other foreign commentators have identified regarding Norway’s slipping standards: They don’t eat us alive on the streets Erwin Kohn describes Gerstenfeld’s and Dershowitz’s description of Norway in Israeli media as unbalanced and untruthful. By: Christina Furnes redaksjonen@dagen.no Star lawyer Alan Dersho-witz and author Manfred Gerstenfeld have recently written several controversial articles in Israeli media in which they claim Norway is the most antisemitic country in Europe. Ervin Kohn of the Jewish Religious Community (DMT) characterize their bombastic ideas as biased and untrue. “Norway is a major supplier of Israel hatred and anti-Semitism” and “there is considerable anti-Semitism in Norwegian schools” are some [...]

From time to time, talk-backers here suggest that Israel should respond to Norway’s anti-Israel policies by breaking off diplomatic relations, or even bomb Norway (so, how would that make Israel any different from the blood thirsty Fiskaa?) Setting aside for the moment the fact that we here at NIJ are neither the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, nor the Norwegian ditto; we merely provide a picture of what goes on in our Norwegian media concerning Israel – here is a different and in many ways more constructive suggestion: For Israel to modify Norwegian perceptions of it would require suicidal risk-taking. Any successful policy must, therefore, be based on a radically different approach: the continued public exposure of Norwegian hate-mongering, so that its government’s international image becomes as tarnished as its reality. Here the onus is put on Norway’s elites to stop their one-sided and biased approach to Israel, make concrete steps to apologize for, and avoid future repetitions of, transgressions that are detailed below: Comment: How Israel should face hostile Norway gov’t By MANFRED GERSTENFELD 08/11/2011 21:21 In order to develop a new attitude toward the Norwegian gov’t, one must understand characteristics of country’s “progressive elite.” In recent years, there have been [...]
