Today, at 3 PM, our PM Jens Stoltenberg is widely expected to officially and formally apologize to the Norwegian Jewish community for the state sponsored persecution and murder of Norwegian citizens with a Jewish background during the WWII. Whatever form that eventual apology finally would be presented as, does not detract from the perception that Norway continues to send mixed signals to our own Jewish community as well as our well documented partiality in the ME conflict. Whilst we as a nation, prepare to possibly apologize to our Jewish minority, former Bishop of Oslo, Gunnar Stålsett led a rally against extremism. In his address, he said among other things Through the years we have paraded against racism and war. We have turned our backs on neo-Nazism anti-Semitism. We stand shoulder to shoulder, Christians, Jews, Muslims, believers and humanists. Today too, we stand together for human dignity and tolerance. Fine words, but actions speak louder than words. Stålsett himself should look in himself before preaching tolerance to others, judging by his own record, he leaves a bit to be desired in that department. To make it even more complex, how can a rally that features Lars Gule as a speaker, remotely [...]

Lifted from miff.no NTB ‘s extreme over focus on Israel II No one knows for sure how many were killed in the climax of the Sri Lankan civil war, but it is estimated to be from 10 to 20 times more than the total number of people killed in the conflict between Palestinians and Israel over the past four years. In the same period, the NTB mentioned Israel six times more often than Sri Lanka. Over the last four years, news agency NTB just mentioned Sri Lanka more than Israel in one of 48 months. Israel is mentioned in a total of 6,851 articles, Sri Lanka in 1152 articles, a search in the media database Atekst shows. MIFF has previously documented NTB extreme cover of Israel in relation to Egypt. The civil war in Sri Lanka has cost up to hundreds of thousands of lives since 1983, among them several thousands civilians. The largest loss of civilian life took place in the last five months of the war, from January 2009 to May 2009. Estimates vary from 3000 to 5000 civilians (Sri Lankan authorities) to 40,000 (Gordon Weiss, a former official in the UN). In addition, large losses of the contending parties, the Sri [...]

lifted from miff.no The news agency NTB covered Israel 208 percent more than Egypt from 2008 to 2010, according to the media database Atekst. Every month, for 36 consecutive months, tiny Israel with its eight million inhabitants was covered more than the world’s most populous Arab country, with over 80 million inhabitants. Egypt was mentioned in 1583 articles. By comparison, Israel was mentioned in 4,883articles. As everyone knows, 2011 was an extraordinary year for Egypt, but even in the year of revolution , in which a president was overthrown, and in which over 800 Egyptians were killed and 6000 injured, and with parliamentary elections held, was Egypt covered only 18 percent more than Israel. In six of the twelve month period (May to October) Israel was mentioned more than Egypt. Overall in 2011, Israel was covered in 1968 articles. While much of the Arab world is in turmoil, NTB has increased the number of articles where Israel is mentioned, from 4.46 per day in the period 2008-2010, to 5.39 in 2011. Egypt was mentioned in 2,324 articles in 2011. Applies also to others Also in other Norwegian newspapers and online newspapers, we see the same excessive focus on Israel in comparison to Egypt. The following figures show the number of articles in which Israel and Egypt are mentioned in the period 2008 to 2010. In the revolution year, 2011, most media wrote more about Egypt than Israel, but only slightly. For many years, MIFF has pointed out how Israel systematically is covered differently in the Norwegian media compared with other countries. Any perceived or real wrongdoing by Israel was more extensively covered than much worse actions by its regional neighbors or other countries’. More searches in the media database Atekst will prove that this is the case. - In December 2009 Odd Myrland wrote in a commentary that the extreme over focus on Israel would “whip up hatred against Israel, against Jews and against Israel’s friends,” .
Two days ago, we published the story on how Norwegian media reported 3 Palestinians killed in Israeli air raids on Gaza, but without mentioning the context of rocket attacks imminent terror threats against Israeli civilian targets. Today, VG has a follow up story on this, this time focusing on the moment of death of the Palestinian terrorist – the first 2/3 of the article is essentially identical with what I previously reported, but the last bit gives a truly twisted presentation of facts: Father and son killed Thursday last week one of the leaders of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, Issam al-Batsh, was killed when Israeli aircrafts attacked a car in the middle of a busy street in Gaza City. According to Hermann, Batsh was involved in planning a terrorist attack in Eilat in 2007, in which three Israelis were killed. The defence spokesman confirmed that the attack against the car to the al-Batsh was carefully planned, and said Israel had intelligence indicating that al-Batsh was planning a new attack against Israel the day after. - We believe that our attacks on targets in Gaza has prevented more attacks against Israel, and helps to reduce these groups’ ability to hit targets in Israel, he said.
That the NRK views the tragic ME conflict through its very own and particular lens is nothing new. But NRK is not only biased in its presentation of the conflict, but is also too lazy to do a decent journalistic job and check its sources. Time constraints, combined with the fact that the NRK correspondent for the ME currently is busy doing a body count in Egypt obliges the NRK to purchase many of its stories, Reuters being a very frequent source for its material. But in the ME conflict, Reuters has famously shown itself to be biased to the core of its bones, with photographers doctoring photos of tragic events. One would have thought that with such a poor track record, somebody, somewhere at the NRK would check the facts delivered from Reuters. Apparently not, even after yet another study confirms that Reuters is anything but neutral on its ME reporting. A new example of NRK sloppiness, or perhaps just plain laziness can be found in this story: Three persons killed in Gaza strip attack Three persons were killed and almost 20 persons were injured after Israeli air raids against the Gaza strip the last 24 hours. Two Palestinian men were killed [...]

Has NRK finally been confronted with the consequences of giving free reins to fantasy and obscure intentions? This is not the first time the NRK has been asked to explain its editorial content, and its ability to comply with minimal standards of decorum. Notably, Israel has requested an inquiry into the institutionalized bias with regards to Israel. The inquiry was badly botched, provoking several journalists and later also the leader of the NRK broadcasting council to condemn it. Somebody said, you start with the Jews, or Israel, but end with something entirely different! UN COURT ATTACKS NRK Ny Tid 2011 11 29, Carima Tirillsdotter Heinesen Summary. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia has sent a letter to Norwegian state broadcaster NRK (And also Swedish state broadcaster Sveriges Radio) over a “Brennpunkt” program, which the court stated has grossly contorted the facts concerning the Srebrenica massacre. The court wants its views to be published in a relevant context. It is of interest to note that this program, which attempted to shift responsibility over the massacre on the Bosnian Muslim leadership also was strongly criticized by the PFU, the ethical board of Norwegian journalists. Nevertheless, the leader of the NRK, [...]

For the NRK it seems they prefer defensive operations with casualties, so they can once again use the big headlines and twist it, as much as possible, in favor of the terrorists. From Israel, but headline makes you believe it is from Gaza, at least if you know your NRK. 2.
This article was published in Norwegian on the ICEJ website in Norwegian, we have got the English version to share with you. Although the article does not specifically mention Norway, it is sadly true that all of these serious shortcomings in professionalism is a hallmark of Norwegian medias attitude towards Israel. A very recent example, the would be suicide bomber Wafa A-Biss, who was released yesterday as part of the prisoner swap for Gilad Shalit, is busy today poisoning Gaza’s children’s minds, encouraging not only terrorism, but in effect asking the kids to kill themselves. Not a pip in Norwegian main stream media. If a settler as much as sneezes, we get the camera crews with idle minded reporters on tow to cover the event… Mainstream Double Standards against Israel Manfred Gerstenfeld The use of double standards against Israel has permeated large parts of the world’s mainstream. One finds this phenomenon at the United Nations and many of its affiliates, among governments including Western ones, in major media – of which the BBC is the one best investigated, academic institutions, NGO’s, liberal churches and so on. The definition of a double standard is rather simple. The Cambridge Dictionaries online put [...]

MIFF (With Israel for Peace) reports on its home pages that young communists harassed MIFF members and stole an Israeli flag at a recent rally in Trondheim. This is the second time in a short time, that young communists harass and attack a MIFF stand and tries to shut down a lawful public meeting, and the umpteenth time that the same sorry sods fail to understand what it means to live in a democracy, namely that everybody has a right to express thoughts, opinions and political beliefs. But then again, communism and democracy were always opposite concepts, and all communist states have failed miserably in providing anything that resembles equality, or freedom to their unfortunate underlings. Notwithstanding, these brats with severe behavioral issues, who have enjoyed every freedom the Norwegian democracy can offer, have taken it upon themselves to decide who can and who cannot express their opinions, and resort to harassment, physical threats and thieving in order to show their gratitude for the freedoms they have enjoyed. MIFF members in Trondheim start to feel very uncomfortable with this situation and consider requesting police protection next time they arrange a rally. The matter has been reported to the police who [...]

Lifted from Jpost. This article highlights the problem of underreporting of serious problems relating to press freedom in Gaza, but also the West Bank. It does not help Palestinians in their quest for statehood that journalists who cover the conflict fail to address these severe shortcomings, or at least – to the extent they interview Palestinian leaders, challenge them on these matters. It does not make you less Palestine friendly, only more credible. Reporters in Gaza will need Hamas-approved ‘sponsors’ By OREN KESSLER 09/26/2011 20:25 Move requires foreign journalists to be accompanied by Hamas-approved “fixers”; Swedish journalist: “This is like Soviet Union.” Talkbacks (4) Hamas authorities in Gaza are requiring foreign journalists to take on regime-approved “sponsors” while in the Strip, the latest sign the Islamist group is determined to keep a tight lid on the flow of information from the coastal territory. Terje Carlsson, a freelance Swedish journalist, left Israel on Sunday for Gaza, first crossing the Palestinian Authority checkpoint at the border of the Strip and a few hundred meters on, the checkpoint run by Hamas. “They usually check your luggage for liquor, write down your passport number and ask where you’re staying,” he told The Jerusalem Post by phone [...]

It all sounds so simple. It is just a matter of Israeli stubbornness, for which they must be roundly condemned. So, if only these pesky Israelis could be brought under control, then all should be just fine? Gaza will sort itself out, and that minor fact that Oslo 2 does not mention anything about not building in areas under dispute? Minor details, but all of this will be resolved as soon as Israel corrects her ways. Funny how they have forgotten every time the Palestinians have gotten up from the negotiating table, thrown all that was offered, butchered Jews and then come back with ever more outrageous claims. No no, obviously must be better to throw the Jews under the bus. Again. According to the wisdom of Norwegian newspaper editors who through some mysterious process have become the holders of Truth. Verdens Gang , Editorial 2011 09 07 PALESTINIANS UN ACHES Later this month, the Palestinians will, as far it as can be judged, go to the UN over their wishes of the Palestinian areas being recognized as a state.
lifted in full from wikileaks 1. (C) Summary: Anti-Semitism in Norway, and the expression of anti-Semitic comments, has increased since the Gaza war. The small Norwegian Jewish community is wary of being targeted, and "Jew" has become more popular as an epithet. While the issue of anti-Semitism is frequently debated in the media, Norwegians society has difficulty confronting it. Compared with Americans, Norwegians generally are more reluctant to accuse anyone of anti-Semitism, more reluctant to judge offense by the standards of the offended group, and more likely not to differentiate between Jews and Israelis. Israeli embassy officials have told us that increased Norwegian anti-Semitism is viewed in Israel as consistent with Norway's general anti-Israel bias, and anti-Semitism's rise further diminishes Norway's ability to mediate in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. End Summary. Public Debate over Rahm Emmanuel -------------------------------- 2. (C) Over the last two months, a former prime minister, Kare Willoch, and a preeminent commentator on U.S. policy, Ole Moen, were accused of making comments that were anti-Semitic. On December 30 in a television debate program, when asked about the prospect for progress in the Middle East with Obama leading negotiations, Willoch said, "it doesn't look good, because he has chosen a [...]

Now that we have the ruling from the UN on the matter, could we please ask the following persons, or organizations to retract their statements or amend their entries so that they reflect reality: SV: Gaza blockade is illegal The International Red Cross Committee: Gaza blockade breaches international Law Professor Geir Ulfstein at the Law faculty of University of Oslo: Blockade breachers International Law Member of Parliament Stine Renate Håheim, who in her blog claims that Israel has repeatedly broken international Law as well as human rights. She may be well adviced to read the section of the UN report which slams organizers of the flotilla and say they: “acted recklessly in attempting to breach the naval blockade. The majority of the flotilla participants had no violent intentions, but there exist serious questions about the conduct, true nature and objectives of the flotillaorganizers, particularly IHH. The actions of the flotilla needlessly carried the potential for escalation.” It is to our eternal shame that one of our indirectly elected members of parliament has so little regard for the People she is entrusted to represent that she thinks she is not only is above the Law, but also independently has the capacity to interpret it.
Here we go again, its the Israeli lobby that blocks Obama from doing what the Europeans want. Isn’t it strange how, in an article that purportedly is about the boycott-act in Israel, bases its argumentation on how the Israeli lobby in the USA can influence Obama? Over an beyond this, as freelance journalist Karin Abrahams points out in one feedback, why is there no mention of the fact that this particular law is now being studied by the Israeli Supreme Court for a ruling on whether or not this law is constitutional or not. For an article that is very well written, with many excellent observations, failing to also mention this somehow detracts from the overall sober tone of this paper. Another puzzling aspect is why Israel should have to ask the US for permission to do whatever they want to do in their own house? The Patriot Act should be more than enough for the North Americans to review, which is why the US has kept elegantly out of the fray on this one. But Norway too bans boycott of Israel -this was the outcome when, in 2005, the South Trondelag county council adopted a decision to unilaterally boycott [...]

Some time ago we wrote on how Vibeke Løkkeerg tried to adorn herself with the dead youth of Utøya by dedicating her trash movie Tears for Gaza to them, as a publicity stunt to get more votes for the Peoples Amanda award she had been shortlisted for. I am delighted to let you know that ordinary Norwegians do not buy such obvious nonsense, and voted for another film instead, The Troll Hunter. Løkkeberg had been shortlisted for best movie, but here too she failed to convince the jury, who instead awarded the price to King of the Devils Island. Mockery aside, we note that while cinema lovers in Norway boycott Israeli films, the Jerusalem Film Festival is happy to screen Norwegian films that present lies about Israel. Maybe there is a material difference between Israeli and Norwegian film lovers? At the time of screening the film, the artistic director of JFF, Avinoam Harpac, was interviewed by the Norwegian Christian daily Dagen: Unauthorized excerpt from the article: Ludicrous During the Gaza war, which is the topic for Løkkebergs film, the Trondheim Cinematheque took down the Israeli film, Waltz with Bashir. This was a protest. Harpac has very little time for boycotts [...]
