What a glaring contrast. A professor at the University of Bergen as well the University College of Oslo (yes, that is the institution that hires bomb-master Gule), Elisabeth Eide, claims that Muslims are the new Jews, citing Sartre’s essay ” Reflections on the Jewish question”. On her homepage, she provides a greatly embellished version of her CV, omitting from places she visited the fact that she, together with the rest of the Marxist-Leninist outfits of the now defunct Workers Communist Party (now also known as the leftist extremist party Red), was personally invited by Pol Pot to tour his antechamber to Hell in Cambodia (she only lists Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh and India). In contrast, a Norwegian Muslim, Mohamed Abdishazan, has written an oped on NyeMeninger.no, where he argues the exact opposite, the Europe’s new Jews, still are the Jews. Ms. Eide must have been sniffing glue, while Mr. Abdishazan should be a source of eternal pride for his family, for reflecting the strong values they have instilled in him! Below, an unauthorized translation of Abdishazan’s oped: Europe’s new Jews are still the Jews By: Mohamed Abdishazan. McGonagall of Israelwhat comments on the issue. Erna Solberg believes McGonagall is confused. Who isn’t? On August 4th, Verdens Gang published an interview with Erna Solberg under the title “Erna Solberg belives Muslims harassed like Jews during thirties” (above). The same day, McGonagall published a post on the matter. In the very first paragraph of McGonagall’s piece we find the following: ” To be very fair (and this is of fundamental importance in todays Norway), she has underlined that Muslims today are not subject to the brutal repressions as Jews were in the 1930s but thinks that the extreme agitation against Muslims, bears resemblance to hatred against Jews. This is an important clarification. I ask you to keep it in mind. Read through McGonagall’s post and judge for yourself whether or not Erna Solberg receives fair treatment. Erna Solberg herself seems to feel that this is not the case. On August 7th Erna Solberg posts, on her own blog, the following reply to a reader who alerts her to McGonagall’s piece (below): Unauthorized translation of Solberg’s post (Note- [...]

A comment by Vetle Lid Larssen, Aftenposten August 12, 2011, with thanks to Erwin Kohn who made me aware of it. Hunting for votes Every time somebody draws parallels between the fate of the Jews and other forms of racism, I get suspicious. Not because the Jews are the only persecuted people in the world history, or because their story of suffering shall reign alone – but because the industrial mass destruction of 6 million Jews in the midst of the Europe of Humanism remains a particular case in the history of mass murders. Every initiative that tries to draw strength from this catastrophe, the way we now have seen Erna Solberg do, is automatically placed in the heavy shadow of the Holocaust. There can be little doubt that Muslims and other immigrants in Norway are both discriminated against as well as the objects of hateful harassment in Norway and Europe; and that the Europeans – like many other Peoples, religions and cultures – have a long to go to reflect on this. There can also be no doubt about the existence of some muddy brownish dirt here at home, and probably more than what we have been aware. But the [...]

Erwin Kohn, the leader of the Jewish congregation in Oslo was interviewed by Dagsavisen on August 5: – A comparison lacking in historical understanding The leader of the Jewish Congregation in Oslo thinks the real intention behind conservative leader Erna Solberg is to attract attention with her initiative to compare agitation against Muslims with the persecution of Jews. HÅVARD THERKELSEN 05. august 2011, – This is a populistic initiative. I think Erna does this to attract attention, says the leader and daily manager of the Jewish Congregation to Dagsavisen. Yesterday [August 4] the leader of the conservative party, Erna Solberg said to VG that “the way extreme anti-Islam groups characterize Muslims today, reflect the way extreme anti-Semitic groups characterized the Jews during the decades leading up to WWII. Kohn reacts to what he sees a comparison “lacking in historical understanding” and points out that Jews were persecuted by the state in the 1930s and subjected to rasist laws. This is not the case for Muslims today. This is one of the reasons he thinks the conservative leader acted improperly. – The Prime Minister has said there is a time for every thing. Political leaders have agreed to not make politics [...]

ES: Yes, what I told VG today, many of the thoughts, the descriptions these extreme anti-Islamic groups use, [sound familiar and remind me of the extreme anti-Semitic] groups and what they were doing, well, all the time up to the second world war. This, these conspiracy theories – who rule the world? who shall take over the world ?- these extremist groups [simply wont believe] public authorities stating otherwise. She says (unauthorized translation) I have been in touch with ethnic minority youths, who are born and raised in Norway. Their greatest challenge is that they are frequently met with claims that they are not Norwegians. It ranges from discrimination at nightclubs, to always having to answer where they originally come from. They are met with different expectations based on prejudice, and many individual Muslims are being held collectively responsible for actions of all Muslims. She is careful to relate this to the job market in particular, that if you have a foreign sounding name, your chances of being called in for job interviews become very small.
How the mighty fall! Several months back, the leader of the Holocaust center had nothing but scorn, perhaps even outright animosity to Gerstenfelds claim that anti-semitism is a great and growing problem in Norway. Back then he said: One reason to carry out such a survey, is also the offensive which has been waged against Norway by parts of the civilian Israeli society and parts of the Israeli state, where allegations of widespread anti-Semitism has taken the form of a propaganda-offensive, because it lacks empirical proof. Fure believes the Israeli author Manfred Gerstenfeld is partaking in this offensive…. In another interview, a day or two later, the unrepentant Fure had this to say about Gerstenfeld: “He is not worth to be involved in a polemic with; I prefer to relate to serious persons. We do not take this person seriously. To us, his opinions are totally indifferent. What he is saying, is that highly respected researchers are intellectual frauds, this says everything about this person”, Fure says. How interesting then that today in an interview with Vårt Land , the same old Fure had to eat his words; I did not expect this level of harassment against Jews. Unfortunately, in [...]

His latest charge: The Progress party representative Per Willy Amundsen borders very near on being racist after citing official statistics showing that Muslims have the lowest participation in the Norwegian job market. In an interview with Vårt Land, he charges that this comparison is akin to the national socialist party’s agitation in Germany in the 1930s: “substitute Muslim for Jew and you will get an idea of the severity of the [Progress Party] claim.” Lets put this issue into context: On May 10, the Governmentally (yes, that refers to the current govt, where his party is coalition member commissioned report “Welfare and Migration” was made public.
The persecution of the Roma is a serious matter which Europe must attend to, but does it really resemble anything even in the ballpark area of how Europe has persecuted the Jews? The Nettavisen article above, by Thomas Rud, is titled “May become modern society’s persecution of Jews”. This is just another example of how comparisons are of limited use. The Romas are being maltreated and abused, yes, but can one really compare their situation to that of European Jewry, one third of whom were slaughtered during the Holocaust? Remember, in nazi-Germany a law of 7 April 1933 banned Jews from occupying posts in the civil service, the universities, the teaching profession, the judiciary and other government institutions as well. That law did not signal the beginning and it certainly did not signal the end – after 1933 everything got worse very fast. We keep seeing how everyone is somehow “like the Jews”. Coupled with this we see a campaign aimed at undermining the Jewishness of the Jews themselves. linkscolor = "000000"; highlightscolor = "888888"; backgroundcolor = "FFFFFF"; channel = "none";

One cannot compare the situation of Muslims in contemporary Norway with that of the Jews during the thirties. It just cannot be done. Unless you don’t know no history, pe’haps caint read too good, dawg. Today in Aftenposten Trine Skei Grande, the leader of the Norwegian Liberal Party (Venstre) writes an Op-ed on Muslims, stating Muslims are targets of racism, blaming the Progressive Party over this phenomenon. She also blames the media over dispersing “Islamophobia”. Quote: “We have seen it before. Exchange “Muslims” for “Jews”or “Coloreds” in the above quotes; and you shall see an eerie parallel to some of the darkest chapters in European history. Imagine a referendum on synagogues, or a parliamentary decision on the Jewish headgear Kippa. Like anti-Semitism, Islamophobia has a long and bad history, also on our own continent”. Dear Trine Skei Grande, you silly person, the fall of the Weimar republic had nothing to do with petty details like headgear. Only in Norway are we cursed with an intelligentsia who are too illiterate to see just how ridiculous Grande is. linkscolor = "000000"; highlightscolor = "888888"; backgroundcolor = "FFFFFF"; channel = "none";

Young Norwegians of Somali descent are increasingly radicalized, sometimes to the extent that they go abroad to fight for Al-Shabaab. In an Aftenposten article a young muslim claims “Muslims are being treated like Jews after WWII – we are attacked”. The young man, one Omar Benkhriss, is of course partly right. Jews were indeed attacked after WWII. Few people know, but Omar Benkhriss has been reading up on history. Well done so far, Mr.Benkhriss. As for the other part about Muslims being attacked, the statistics tell us – especially when it comes to rape – that it’s the other way around. Aftenposten’s Saturday feature on radicalization among Somalis in Norway is titled “Holy war” with the explaining subtitle: “Youths in the Norwegian-Somalian milieu are worried over how more young muslims are becoming radicals and support acts of terror”. Summary: Somalis are worried over how their young men are radicalized, some even to the extent that they go to Somalia to fight for Al-Shabaab. A police spokesman states that the development is going in the wrong direction – the situation for Norwegian-Somalis is getting worse, not better. One of the young Somalis interviewed in the article is the tattoo-sporting Norwegian-Algerian Omar [...]

Only if you know no history can you compare the situation of Muslims in contemporary Europe to the situation of Jews in Europe during the thirties. Yet once again, here we go. The screenshot above is from Dagbladet today, with journalist Maria L.Kleve interviewing Danish journalist Jens Høvsgaard, who is writing a crime novel casting right-wing radicals and Christian fundamentalists as the baddies. Excerpt: “He (Høvsgaard) believes increased globalization, together with 9/11, has given Muslims a position which reminds of that of the Jews during the thirties“. Is that so now? If Høvsgaard provided an analysis, or even just some few good examples during the interview, they must have been edited out. Chances are he didn’t though, and that Kleve didn’t ask. Seeing as how Norwegian journalists are so keen on writing about Israel and Jews, perhaps it would be a good idea to include history in the curriculum at the oh-so-prestigious Journalisthøyskolen (College of journalism). These people know nothing. Absolutely nothing. linkscolor = "000000"; highlightscolor = "888888"; backgroundcolor = "FFFFFF"; channel = "none";

Claiming that “the Jews” have become “pretty much like nazis” no longer raises eyebrows. Thomas Hylland Eriksen is a professor of social anthropology at the University of Oslo, and if any Norwegian academic can claim household recognition, it’s him. He writes entertainingly and engagingly on a number of topics, and is a chat show regular. He has also recently jammed his foot down his throat. His latest book “Søppel – avfall i en verden av bivirkninger” (“Trash – Garbage in a world of side effects”) is mostly an interesting take on the implications of garbage, and the salient fact that there’s more of it every day. While rambling happily on about the concept of “unclean peoples”, in a manner not unlike, say, a Bill Bryson or a Jared Diamond, he suddenly produces a monumental mound of refuse himself. It all starts innocently enough: (Unauthorised translation) The Jews (were considered) unclean because they were both insiders and outsiders: They had contributed disproportionately to Europe’s fine arts and were culturally competent, but at the same time they were not quite insiders due to their religion, their networks and their propensity for endogamy (they mostly married other Jews). They excluded themselves, and were [...]

Andresen is that very unpleasant fellow we wrote about last week, when we translated verbatim with a copy of his own entry on an internal forum at NTNU Here is his reply to Dershowitz (also only in Norwegian in a paper nobody outside Norway gives a rats behind about): I am not an “antisemite”, Dershowitz TROND ANDRESEN, Trondheim I am being attacked by Alan M. Dershowitz because I have publicly stated my concerns about problematic attitudes in the Jewish global community. The quotes AMD used , were two separate paragraphs taken out of context, from an entry I wrote during Israels bombing of Gaza. but such critique is – regardless of whether it is right or wrong – taboo. It is met with loud protests of “antisemitism”. But I have no racist attitudes against Jews, and I take exception to this label. Let me use another group, Muslims, as an example. For years, public and persistent criticism against not only Islamic terrorism, but also the vast (and peaceful) majority of muslims, has been tolerated – for the attitudes to women, gay, freedom of religion and more. The Opinion is that Muslims as a group must work to reduce this. I [...]

The screenshot above is from a Norwegian site which provides information for Farsi-speakers. The article is on how asylum-seekers and refugees will be required to carry photo-ID on them. The picture is of a Jew wearing the star of David. Seen in isolation, this is a matter of no consequence. It is the pattern which is disturbing: the allegation that the “Muslims are the Jews of today” is rooted neither in reality nor in history. linkscolor = "000000"; highlightscolor = "888888"; backgroundcolor = "FFFFFF"; channel = "none";
