On August 5, readers of this exotic mini-magazine were delighted with this editorial, a highbrow piece of cultural understanding. HOW The long term way of honoring the victims is to expose the kind of thoughts that poisoned the mind of the perpetrator and put an end to it. The crime must be seen in light of the 20th century, the German editor Nils Minkmar writes in an article we have translated for this weeks edition” We have known Behring Breivik for a long time. We only forgot about him”. Too few have reacted against anonymous, rightist extremist hate-speech in mainstream Norwegian online papers. Many have probably been shocked, but have opted for a de facto silence in the face of the poisonous words, and allowed them to spread. The perpetrator has lived in an online world, where he thought he acted on behalf of many. We must confront what has happened with “more humanity, but never naivety” the Prime Minister said. It is naive to believe that words do not lead to acts. The word is the most powerful there is. “we now know that there is a real danger that our rhetorics can make a mad man go crazy”, Ole [...]

Clearly, we have underestimated Støre’s political acumen. In Dagsnytt 18, he (of course) expressed great consternation at reports of antisemitism but (of course) wanted to separate antisemitism and anti-Israeli attitudes. It was for the sake of the Norwegian Jews, he said, that “certain groups” had to stop trying to defend Israel’s “illegal [sic]” occupation by accusing critics of Israel with antisemitism. And if anyone wanted a character witness for his sincere intention, they only needed to call DMT. I don’t know what his intention was in making this statement, but I have to wonder if he had said this without some idea what the answer would be. And he repeatedly made mention of a small minority dhimmi that Norway has a special obligation to protect. What would Støre say if the leadership of the DMT said something like: As a matter of fact, the way you and the rest of the “political elite” talk about Israel is not just unreasonable in its own right, it also encourages antisemitism. Whether or not that is your intention, it is the reality, and you must take responsibility for it. Would Støre still take the problem seriously? In coming down hard on this distinction, [...]

Morten Høglund in the Progress Party posed a perfectly reasonable question to foreign minister Støre, namely whether the Norwegian government would demand from both the provisional Hamas-Fatah government, and a future Palestinian government, that it comply with the quartet requirement to a) recognize the state of Israel, b) renounce political violence, and c) commit to earlier agreements. Støre needed to go to Berlin first and have a meeting with Abbas, but today he finally provided a very brief response. These are the crucial phrases of his answer, outlining the Norwegian policy toward Israel and the Palestinian authorities. The government has been – and continues to be – positive to all steps that over time will unite the Palestinian population on the West Bank and Gaza under one rule … when Norway in 2007 chose to cooperate with the coalition government at the time, it was based on a government platform that had adequate references to and respected committed agreements and agreement parties. This platform was based on a continuation of the principle of armistice … the government sees no reason to repeat this if we consider that these principles are reflected in the new coalition government’s platform. If it doesn’t [...]

Norway FM Støre acknowledges that Hamas has carried out terrorist actions but refuses to “label” Hams as a terror-organization. Not everybody finds such discrimination wise. Israel’s MFA is not alone in seeing newspeak and doublethink where Norwegian apparatchiks see reason. In a parliament question and answer session on February 9th, Hans Olav Syversen (Christian Democrats) put the following question to FM Jonas Gahr Støre: “Does the government find Hamas to be a terrorist organization or not?” Støre’s answer seems to imply that the word “terrorist” ought to be removed from the dictionary altogether. For Støre’s lengthy answer, read the complete transcript. Israel MFA’s comment to Støre is well put, and reads as follows: In response to comments made by Norway’s Foreign Minister at the debate in the Storting on Wednesday, February 9, the Foreign Ministry of Israel would like to emphasize the following: He who refuses to call a murderer a murderer blurs the distinction between good and evil, which lies at the base of all ethical consideration. Hamas is an organization that has indiscriminately killed civilians, in a deliberate and calculated manner, giving it political, religious and racist justification. If this kind of organization cannot be defined as terrorist, who can? [...]

Hamas flaunts just about all rules and blows up 13 compatriots, including at least 5 children and three women at Kassam training center. None of the relevant Norwegian media outfits finds this remotely intersting, but NRK ought to be congratulated for having dedicated precious press space to the story of 2 year old Nathalie from Ramallah and her somewhat unorthodox choice of companion animal – a 3 meter long python snake. I am however very concerned that this animal has been imported from Israel, as I am sure that in the unfortunate event that somehow a two year old that rides a python should get injured, the Norwegian media will then write about killer snake from Israel, thereby finding yet another proof of absolute evil. The unfortunate 13 persons, including 5 children and 3 women are on the other hand not worthy a mention, not even a question as to why on earth children are brought along to dangerous explosives training? The logical conclusion is clear. If one mentions Palestine in hate speeches and calls for mass murder against Jews, one risks nothing in Sweden.” Posted in April 2006 in Islam in Europe “The following are parts of an opinion article written by four Swedish Jews about a recent decision by the Swedish government not to investigate Muslim incitement against Jews in Sweden. “Discussions about the limits of freedom of expression are running high right now, not least because of the Muhammed cartoons in Danish Jyllandsposten. The EU Council states in a controversial message on the 27th February, that it acknowledges and regrets that these cartoons were considered offensive and distressing by Muslims across the world and that a spirit of respect for religious and other beliefs should prevail. It is a crime in Sweden to express derogatory statements about ethnic, racial, national, religious and sexual minorities or to incite hatred and violence against them.
On February 16th several major Norwegian newspapers told their readers about how Yusuf al-Qaradawi, to whom many Norwegian moslems look for guidance on religious matters, had stated that the holocaust was a divine punishment and that Adolf Hitler had “put the jews in their place”. Many Norwegians interpreted this to mean that Qaradawi actually meant that the holocaust was a divine punishment and that Adolf Hitler had “put the jews in their place”. As it turns out, this is not what Qaradawi meant at all, according to Cecilie Hellestveit in this weeks’ edition of Morgenbladet. Cecilie Hellestveit is a junior researcher at the center for human rights at the University of Oslo, where she is writing her phd on war, international law and peace processes. In her article in Morgenbladet she claims that Qaradawi needs to be read in his own cultural context and that the newspaper headlines of the 16th were consequences of ignorance. An excerpt below: Qaradaqi concluded his appeal with the following words: “The sole thing that I await now that my life is drawing to a close, is that Allah gives me the opportunity to travel to the land of jihad and resistance – in a [...]

Norway’s leading business newspaper Dagens Næringsliv runs a two-page interview with the new leader for the Committee for Palestine, Mrs.Line Khateeb. The interview is titled “Lady of peace” and is a cordial affair where Mrs. Khateeb expresses concern over the high level of traffic accidents in Israel, which she attributes to the high level of anxiety which Isrealis suffer from as a consequence of their occupation of Palestinian land. It is a fact that Israel has traditionally held lower levels of traffic mortality then her neighbors, but let’s give Mrs. Khateeb the benefit of doubt in this case. Some of Line Khateeb’s statements: “Everyone respects eachother in Palestine. Christians and Moslems in the same village visit each other and congratulate each other on ceremonial occasions and holidays.” When asked whether Hamas has as it’s goal to annihilate Israel, Khateeb answeres: “I don’t really think this is Hamas’ goal. They have nothing to benefit from this. It was written in their charter of 1988 during the first intifadah. But Hamas’ statements today indicated that they recognize the existence of Israel.” Note: The Committee for Palestine invited representatives from Hamas to Norway in 2006. linkscolor = "000000"; highlightscolor = "888888"; backgroundcolor = "FFFFFF"; channel = "none";

In a letter to Aftenposten today, a reader comments upon the newspaper’s use of statistics: —–Excerpt begins “In an editorial on Febuary 9th, Aftenposten writes that the war in Gaza, according to a recent opinion poll “has radicalized the population of the Westbank and Gaza, and Hamas is receiving increased support”. The newspaper has at best misunderstood the opinion poll from the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion. 26 percent of the interviewed expressed that “my support to Hamas has increased”. Seen in conjunction with other questions, this hardly indicates anything but that symptathy for Hamas has increased in a minority.
