The Norwegian Government’s hypocrisy re-exposed: “the most evil company in the world” is the second largest share holder in “Norsk Hydro” Brazilian Vale, which Norwegian Hydro has a tight partnership with, only accepts the bare minimum of social responsibility, according to a new poll where Greenpeace ranked the Norwegian Hydro partner as the “the world’s most evil company”. Swiss Greenpeace has for the eighth consecutive year, voted for the world’s most evil companies in the competition “Public Eye Award”. In March last year Norwegian Hydro acquired much of the Vale’s aluminum business. In return, Vale received money, got rid of debt and took over Hydro shares. This means that Vale is the second largest shareholder in Norwegian Hydro, with 21.64 percent of the shares. The Norwegian government, the Ministry of Trade and Development, is the largest shareholder, with 34.26 percent of Hydro’s shares. VALE: In the midst of Amazonian rainforest Vale is constructing the Belo Monte dam with devastating consequences for the region’s unique biodiversity and indigenous tribes. The same Norwegian Government excluded Israel’s Elbit Systems Ltd. from the country’s vast global pension-fund portfolio, the largest investment fund in Europe, because of ethical concerns – Why ? The argument was that Elbit makes [...]

While the Norwegian media rightly now focuses on the ongoing atrocities in Syria, and even our FM has felt compelled to politely tell the naughty Assad regime off for the continuing blood bath, one may perhaps be sympathetic to editors’s decision to not cover news from Israel. However, since coverage of Israel continues to be tendentious and one-eyed, one must really wonder why no news outlet has mentioned that the Islamic Jihad accepts responsibility for a new barrage of rockets over Southern Israel again today. Schools were cancelled and thousands were at risk as the rockets hit random targets. Why this reluctance to analyze the desperation friends of the Assad’s must feel as their previously safe dungeons now have to be vacated? Hizballah-Nasrallah now clearly sees the writing on the wall, and Hamas-Mashaal is now touring potential friendly countries who can host his gang of murders. In fact, Hamas is now in such a bad situation that Mashaal, much to the chagrin of Hamas boss In Gaza, Haniyeh, had to do a bit of canossa style crawling and go to Cairo to suck up to Abbas in the fourth meeting between the feuding Palestinian factions since May 2011. It would [...]

Today, at 3 PM, our PM Jens Stoltenberg is widely expected to officially and formally apologize to the Norwegian Jewish community for the state sponsored persecution and murder of Norwegian citizens with a Jewish background during the WWII. Whatever form that eventual apology finally would be presented as, does not detract from the perception that Norway continues to send mixed signals to our own Jewish community as well as our well documented partiality in the ME conflict. Whilst we as a nation, prepare to possibly apologize to our Jewish minority, former Bishop of Oslo, Gunnar Stålsett led a rally against extremism. In his address, he said among other things Through the years we have paraded against racism and war. We have turned our backs on neo-Nazism anti-Semitism. We stand shoulder to shoulder, Christians, Jews, Muslims, believers and humanists. Today too, we stand together for human dignity and tolerance. Fine words, but actions speak louder than words. Stålsett himself should look in himself before preaching tolerance to others, judging by his own record, he leaves a bit to be desired in that department. To make it even more complex, how can a rally that features Lars Gule as a speaker, remotely [...]

Unlike his prompt, however misplaced condemnation of Israel back in June, when Syrian demonstrators broke a fence and entered Israel, our good FM Støre has finally found the opportunity to condemn the Jerusalem Mufti’s call for murdering Jews. However, he had to be prompted to do it; it was only after a letter from Dagfinn Høybråten, a member of Parliament, representing the Christian Democrats, that FM Støre officially took a stance. Here is the story, as delivered by dagen.no Støre deplores the Grand Mufti’s statements Norway deplores the statements from the Mufti of Jerusalem that “the day of redemption for Muslims will come when they start to kill Jews.” The Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap) says this in a written reply to MP DagfinnHøybråten (KrF). By Tor Weibye - This is a remarkably positive response because the foreign minister will take this matter seriously, Høybråten says to Dagen.no. The Foreign Minister writes in his response that the Mufti Husein’s statement appears to be hostile to Jews and are not likely to create confidence between the parties. - I will ask our office in Al Ram to meet the mufti to express that Norway is opposed to the statements he made during the ceremony. Totally unacceptable Høybråten maintains that the Mufti’s statements, whether quotes or anything else, are totally unacceptable. - These statements are made by the leadership, from quarters where one would expect a more responsible attitude, and they were made as an intrinsic part of a celebration in favor of the ruling party. This makes it imperative that Norway clearly marks our position. - So I am pleased that the Foreign Minister will take this very seriously and that he has [...]

Lifted from miff.no NTB ‘s extreme over focus on Israel II No one knows for sure how many were killed in the climax of the Sri Lankan civil war, but it is estimated to be from 10 to 20 times more than the total number of people killed in the conflict between Palestinians and Israel over the past four years. In the same period, the NTB mentioned Israel six times more often than Sri Lanka. Over the last four years, news agency NTB just mentioned Sri Lanka more than Israel in one of 48 months. Israel is mentioned in a total of 6,851 articles, Sri Lanka in 1152 articles, a search in the media database Atekst shows. MIFF has previously documented NTB extreme cover of Israel in relation to Egypt. The civil war in Sri Lanka has cost up to hundreds of thousands of lives since 1983, among them several thousands civilians. The largest loss of civilian life took place in the last five months of the war, from January 2009 to May 2009. Estimates vary from 3000 to 5000 civilians (Sri Lankan authorities) to 40,000 (Gordon Weiss, a former official in the UN). In addition, large losses of the contending parties, the Sri [...]

With reference to yesterday’s post that Norwegian Jews are reluctant to be registered as members of the Jewish congregations. Vårt Land, which prides itself on its high ethical profile, tends to slip dangerously low in actually exercising their own ethical ideals; here is a sample of what passes for polite and suitable opinion on the topic of what Norway can do to protect its Jewish minority, by a man called Per Elias Vågenes (who, as far as I have been able to ascertain, has no professional relationship to Vårt Land, he merely expresses his own personal opinions) There can hardly be one upright person in Norway who does not think that Jews, or other minorities, should enjoy the right to feel safe in the Norwegian society. Information regarding the Holocaust crime is compulsory in the Norwegian school system, and it is quite normal that 6th form pupils travel to Auschwitz to see the memorial over these sites of crimes with their own eyes. But the attitude to the state of Israel has changed. After the war, the slogan was ” a people without a land to land without a people “. The average Norwegian did not know any better. Lifted from miff.no, but also featured in Dagen, although surprisingly not very much reported in mainstream media: Imports from Israel increased by 11 percent to a record level The Norwegian imports from Israel rose more than the overall import from other countries. We bought Israeli goods for NOK 722 million in 2011, compared to NOK 653 million in 2010. by Conrad Myrland The general increase in Norwegian imports, ships and oilplatforms excluded, was 9.3 per cent from 2010 to 2011. Imports from Israel rose by 10.7 percent, according to figures presented by Statistics Norway. Never before have imports from Israel have been greater. The previous peak year of 2008 is off by almost NOK 15 million. Imports from Israel increased more than imports from the Nordic countries (6 %), EU (7.8 %), United States (8.1 %) and the OECD countries(9.6 %). It is slightly lower than the overall increase in imports from Africa(16.4 p%) and Asia (12 %). Also the Norwegian exports to Israel rose from 588 million in 2010 to 622 millionkroner in 2011. - It is very gratifying to see that trade with Israel is increasing, says Conrad Myrland, general manager of With Israel for Peace. - Powerful forces in Norway are working for a boycott of Israel, but Israel has fortunately such strong and competitive goods that embargo supporters can’t manage to get the general population to rally behind the calls for boycott, says Myrland. The Christian daily Dagen adds this information (by Ove Eikje) I am not surprised by these numbers. The main reason is simply that we need electrical components, and they are largely made in Israel, says professor of economics, Ola H. Grytten in a comment.
NORWEGIAN ISRAEL SOLDIER: MY FIRST WAR IS APPROACHING Verdens Gang 2012 01 16 Erlend Skevik Norwegian Linn Pérez, serving in the Israeli Navy, told friends on Facebook of Israel intending to attack Iran. She is now being disciplined by the IDF. “It is detrimental to have such messages written, able to create misunderstandings in a tense situation”, says Bjorn Hermann, spokesman of the IDF, to VG Net. Relations between Iran and Israel have become very tense in later months. In last week, the IAEA confirmed Iran has implemented high grade enrichment of uranium deep inside a mountain. The West holds fear Iran is employing this program to make nuclear weapons, something being denied by Iran. Reactions by the IDF. During this, the girl from Sandnes wrote this Facebook message: “My first war is approaching… If my summer gets busted, then!” Throughout the last year, this girl from Sandnes has served with the IDF, now being stationed at a naval base in the city of Ashdod.
So, it seems Norway is prepared to ignore Turkeys abysmal and worsening human rights records. Our PM manages to praise Erdogan for work well done in the area of human rights, conflict resolution, when in reality, more and more journalists are facing persecution and imprisonment, the Kurds continue to suffer heavy casualties on Turkish as well as Iraqi side of the border due to Turkish military actions, and while all of this is going on, life is not exactly a party for the Christian other non-muslim minorities in the country….For a moment I thought our PM was being sarcastic, but then I noticed how much money that was at stake for us.
lifted from miff.no The news agency NTB covered Israel 208 percent more than Egypt from 2008 to 2010, according to the media database Atekst. Every month, for 36 consecutive months, tiny Israel with its eight million inhabitants was covered more than the world’s most populous Arab country, with over 80 million inhabitants. Egypt was mentioned in 1583 articles. By comparison, Israel was mentioned in 4,883articles. As everyone knows, 2011 was an extraordinary year for Egypt, but even in the year of revolution , in which a president was overthrown, and in which over 800 Egyptians were killed and 6000 injured, and with parliamentary elections held, was Egypt covered only 18 percent more than Israel. In six of the twelve month period (May to October) Israel was mentioned more than Egypt. Overall in 2011, Israel was covered in 1968 articles. While much of the Arab world is in turmoil, NTB has increased the number of articles where Israel is mentioned, from 4.46 per day in the period 2008-2010, to 5.39 in 2011. Egypt was mentioned in 2,324 articles in 2011. Applies also to others Also in other Norwegian newspapers and online newspapers, we see the same excessive focus on Israel in comparison to Egypt. The following figures show the number of articles in which Israel and Egypt are mentioned in the period 2008 to 2010. In the revolution year, 2011, most media wrote more about Egypt than Israel, but only slightly. For many years, MIFF has pointed out how Israel systematically is covered differently in the Norwegian media compared with other countries. Any perceived or real wrongdoing by Israel was more extensively covered than much worse actions by its regional neighbors or other countries’. More searches in the media database Atekst will prove that this is the case. - In December 2009 Odd Myrland wrote in a commentary that the extreme over focus on Israel would “whip up hatred against Israel, against Jews and against Israel’s friends,” .
I am genuinely pleased for the Palestinians in question who now will get their homes reconstructed. However, what is missed from the presentation here, is why the refugee camp was razed in the first place. Could it be that as it was an internal matter in Lebanon, who only tolerate their Palestinians as long as they can serve some perverse political agenda, no Norwegian NGO was sufficiently interested in the matter to raise the awareness of this situation in Norway? It is as if they accepted a priori, that without any Israeli involvement, nobody would bat an eyelid. Not the SV party, not the Labour party, not the Norwegian Church, not even the Palcom in Norway? Our FM Støre has failed to express interest in this matter, and PM Stoltenberg is presently busy nosediving in front of the new wannabe Ottoman ruler in Ankara. And why has not the NRC pressed the Lebanese government to give full citizenship with all its inherent rights, responsibilities and duties to the Palestinians who have been born in their country? Why shall we accept this perpetuation of victimhood, self bestowed or otherwise, of the Palestinians. After all, a child born to Chileans exiles, say [...]

Am I the only one who thinks our PM is a wee bit false for praising Turkey, while the rest of his Government makes a hash out of Israel? NORWAY AND TURKEY DISCUSS HUMAN RIGHTS Fædrelandsvennen 2012 01 10, NTB Summary. Jens Stoltenberg visits Turkey, Stoltenberg insist on dialogue, however, he has been dismissed when attempting to talk about journalists in jail. In meetings with Cerril Cisek, President of Turkey’s national assembly, Stoltenberg was told: “These persons are not accused over anything related to their jobs; but over membership in terrorist organizations”. Never the less, Stoltenberg praise Turkey over “major progress” in human rights.
Remarkably balanced and correct, but who is prepared to believe that Leibovich actually called the Gaza terrorists “militants”? It has taken the press a mighty long time to get these facts, easily available for many months now…. maybe I am cynical, but I think these are moves to prepare the ground to once more fault Israel. ISRAEL ARMING FOR A NEW WAR IN GAZA Verdens Gang 201201 09 Erlend Skevik The number of rockets launched at Israel from Gaza has more than tripled throughout the last year. The IDF is now preparing for a new war against Hamas. In 2011 altogether 627 rockets were fired from the Gaza strip at assorted targets in Southern Israel. These are the highest figures of attacks against Israel by militant groups since the war three years ago. “The goal of the 2009 operation was the reduction of the numbers of rockets. We now see militants having increased access to weaponry. Also, the ranges of the rockets have increased from 40 kilometers to 60. This means they can reach not only targets in the South of Israel, but also densely populated areas surrounding Tel Aviv”, says spokeswoman Avital Leibovich of the IDF to VG net.
This weekend, as part of the 3 year anniversary for the Gaza campaign, the NRK gave the best prime time slot for Saturday night entertainment to medic Mads Gilbert, portraying him as a life saving hero in Tromsø and Gaza, as usual a one-sided, glorification program designed to make Dr. Gilbert look like a saint. However, they jumped the bit where he personally blocked military medics advanced surgery courses, something which would have allowed Norway to have two full surgical teams ready to be dispatched to conflict areas where Norwegian soldiers are deployed – but which we obviously don’t have now! In Sweden, when the Swedish national broadcaster aired Løkkeberg’s now roundly ridiculed Tears of Gaza, the leader of the Swedish Israel Information Center, Liza Abramovicz, filed a formal complaint with The Swedish Broadcasting Commission. According to Abramovicz; I believe the decision to screeing of the film, Tears of Gaza breaches with journalistic ethical principles. According to the SVT spokesperson, the film is an antiwar film, but it only pot rays one side and that is a peculiarly demonizing view. It is a very strong and uncomfortable film, which shows the suffering of the children of Gaza during the Gaza [...]

It would provide a bit of credibility for Norway in the ME, if we also were seen to worry about the wellbeing of Turkish journalists, and not alway look for faults in Israel. Careful with the hamams though – floors may be slippery and you never know what you will fall on! Charges Against Journalists Dim the Democratic Glow in Turkey By DAN BILEFSKY and SEBNEM ARSU ISTANBUL — A year ago, the journalist Nedim Sener was investigating a murky terrorist network that prosecutors maintain was plotting to overthrow Turkey’s Muslim-inspired government. Today, Mr. Sener stands accused of being part of that plot, jailed in what human rights groups call a political purge of the governing party’s critics. Mr. Sener, who has spent nearly 20 years exposing government corruption, is among 13 defendants who appeared in state court this week at the imposing Palace of Justice in Istanbul on a variety of charges related to abetting a terrorist organization. The other defendants include the editors of a staunchly secular Web site critical of the government and Ahmet Sik, a journalist who has written that an Islamic movement associated with Fethullah Gulen, a reclusive cleric living in Pennsylvania, has infiltrated Turkey’s security forces.
