Going back about 8 weeks or so, a story much commented upon both here and elsewhere was the one where it transpired that Norway declined a request from Israel to receive a delegation to study the Norwegian oil industry, its technology and strategies. The following story may explain this puzzling rejection by Norway, we are in cahoots with Lebanon who now has convinced that the oil fields Israel has discovered really should belong to Lebanon Ready for Lebanese oil adventure - with Norwegian assistance The conflict-ridden country is ready to start oil and gas activities in the disputedsea area. Norwegian officials have drawn up regulations - and the Lebanese will have an “oil fund” after the Norwegian model. Lebanon is perhaps a term more often associated with wars and conflicts than oil and wealth. The small country sandwiched between the Mediterranean Sea, Syria and Israel has for decades been a political stage where a number of players have openly played out their agendas - whether they have been Syrian, American, Israeli or Iranian. In the wake of the country’s reconstruction after the civil war, Lebanon has incurred huge debts, which it has had limited opportunities to serve because of lack of natural resources or a strong export industry. But in recent years, the ever-changing governments have spotted an option off its coast: [...]

I am genuinely pleased for the Palestinians in question who now will get their homes reconstructed. However, what is missed from the presentation here, is why the refugee camp was razed in the first place. Could it be that as it was an internal matter in Lebanon, who only tolerate their Palestinians as long as they can serve some perverse political agenda, no Norwegian NGO was sufficiently interested in the matter to raise the awareness of this situation in Norway? It is as if they accepted a priori, that without any Israeli involvement, nobody would bat an eyelid. Not the SV party, not the Labour party, not the Norwegian Church, not even the Palcom in Norway? Our FM Støre has failed to express interest in this matter, and PM Stoltenberg is presently busy nosediving in front of the new wannabe Ottoman ruler in Ankara. And why has not the NRC pressed the Lebanese government to give full citizenship with all its inherent rights, responsibilities and duties to the Palestinians who have been born in their country? Why shall we accept this perpetuation of victimhood, self bestowed or otherwise, of the Palestinians. After all, a child born to Chileans exiles, say [...]

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THOSE NICE WORDS BY NORSK FOLKEHJELP? MIFF 2011 12 07 Conrad Myrland Summary. Norwegian Pro-Israeli website MIFF publishes a letter received from an anguished Norwegian, Jewish woman. The letter is an appeal by Norsk Folkehjelp, Norwegian People’s Aid, for economic support. The text on the envelope was this: “This is what Palestinian refugees want most of all. An address”. This is the letter inside. Translation of the letter: A life without a home. Try to think of yourself and your family being evicted from your home. From now on another family shall live there. You must live as refugees, losing everything- incomes, rights, future. This is the reality to four million Palestinian refugees worldwide. Norsk Folkehjelp has, since 1982, been working for these people to have their homes and futures returned. Two thirds of the inhabitants here in the Gaza strip are refugees. They have been waiting for sixty years to return to their homes and villages. Refugees wearing a key around their necks are not an uncommon sight to us living here. The key is a symbol of not having abandoned hope, though Palestinians are still removed from their homes by force. Many are [...]

Report: The Sri Lankan peace process failed; Minister of the Environment and International Development Erik Solheim brags he thinks Norway has done a good job. Sri Lankan Tamil Tigers were massacred in 2009, UN charges both rebels and Sri Lankan government of war crimes! I guess the good news is that Norway at all has bothered to gauge its track record as a successful peace broker, but which serious minster asks his own government agency to do the research? In glaring contrast to the minister’s self-congratulating babble, the report highlights the major failures. Here is the executive summary, lifted from Norad’s web site. The Palestinians might want to straighten up and take advice, Norway has bitten off more than she can chew and report calls for “careful reflection on whether it is possible for Norway to square the circle of showing a united front with other international players on countering terrorism, whilst attempting to talk with ‘terrorists’ in order to bring peace.” Hm…. wasn’t exactly this the concern revealed in the wiki-leaked cables from the US embassy? Pawns of Peace Executive Summary This evaluation assesses Norway’s peace efforts in Sri Lanka from 1997 to 2009. It tells the story of [...]

No more than 3 days ago, did Liv Tørres the general secretary of the Norwegian People’s Aid say the following in relation to the call for boycotting the annual telethon - The Telethon engages very many and contributes to clearing mines and cluster bombs in 6 countries. The goal of this telethon unites many congregations. We a a party political neutral organization and support a two state solution in the Middle East. The Norwegian People’s Aid has never been an anti-Semitic organization. On the account of party political neutral, everybody was laughing at such a blatant lie, the Norwegian People’s Aid is a subsidiary of the The Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions, which historically happens to be the greatest and most influential donor to the Labour Party. According the NPA’s own site: Norwegian People’s Aid is politically independent but not a politically neutral organisation. We take clear positions in important social debates and our goal of a more just world means that we often choose partners that may be opposed to, or in conflict with, those in power. Popular participation and organisation are important measures in securing human rights and giving people greater influence over their own lives and social development. [...]

Yesterday we reported on an anti-Semitic exhibition at Nesbru High School, and how the school, at the time the local newspaper – Budstikka – wrote the story, had not yet decided whether or not to remove the entire exhibition. Miff.no brings us the latest developments (unauthorized translation): Demonization of Israel removed after student protests Published: Thursday 20 October 2011 By Conrad Myrland The annual solidarity project between Nesbru high school in Asker and Palestinian schools is exploited by political campaigns to tarnish Israel. -”October is not a pleasant month to go to school”, a concerned student wrote to MIFF a few weeks ago. The school project, which is organized by the Norwegian Church Aid, has created an eerie atmosphere for Jewish students at the school before. This year was worse than ever, as arts and crafts students Tuesday presented a political art exhibit in support of a Palestinian state. The political message did not stop there, but also contained a crossed out Israeli flag and the words “murder” underneath it. - Each year, posters are made at my school that say “Free Palestine”, “Fuck Israel” or the like, but this made me really shocked, a Norwegian-Israeli student at the school [...]

I am sure most of you have read it, but just in case, you can read it here – it transpires that eyebrows have been raised in important peoples offices over Official Norway’s cozy relationship with Hamas. Curious to see what else has been going on behind closed doors, I took a look at other cables also released now. Let me just first say that I don’t think the US has anything to be embarrassed by, this is written in a very polite form, sticks to facts and can in no way be said to be so in your face aggressive as seeing a Norwegian minister in office, chatting casually with a guy who holds up a sign that calls the US and Israel the axis of evil during a demonstration that ended up with a massive riot in Oslo! I just wish there was a similarly civicly minded person working at a Norwegian institution handling sensitive information who would think of copying cables sent from Norwegian embassies around the world. I am sure [...]

Today is a day of joy for the people of South Sudan. After one of the most protracted and bloody civil wars on the African continent, with more than 2 million war casualties and over 4 million displaced people, the formal declaration of independence took place yesterday, following the over-whelming referendum where 99% of the mainly Christian South Sudanese, voted to spilt from the predominantly Muslim North Sudan. The cited casualty and refugee numbers do not reflect the victims of the Darfur genocide. Darfurians hope to establish a secular state of their own. Although independence has been declared, a range of difficult and important issues remain to be negotiated, for instance final borders and how to split oil revenues. To add more complications, traditional pastoral lands have been bought up by foreign companies, many of them from neighboring Arab countries. This practice is referred to as land grab and represents a potent risk factor in an area where traditionally, conflicts are solved by gun power. Norway has played an important role in the negotiations, for which we have every reason to be proud. But unlike our meddling in the Israel-Palestine conflict, where the current government clearly has taken sides, Norway [...]

Have a closer look at this map, it features the 17 most oppressive states in the world. According to Aftenposten, who nicked the story from the US based Freedom House. According to this paper, a stunning 1,6 billion of our fellow human inhabitants on this beautiful planet called Earth, do not enjoy basic civic or human rights such as freely expressing thoughts and beliefs. In the context of extreme Israel bashing that has put Israel on top of list of worst country in online, uncontrolled surveys and then widely published in uncritical and unthinking press as if somehow representative of anything at all, it must be really irritating for the pundits and self-professed experts that Israel is not to be seen on this list of repressive states. In fact, Israel gets a good mark, and is equal to France, Italy, Greece in civic liberties, but better than South Africa, and obviously miles ahead of Turkey. But the Aftenposten article is strange for what it omits, they point out that Tibet, South Ossetia and Western Sahara are included on the list of unfree territories. But so is the Gaza strip and West bank too, why is this not mentioned? Norwegian experts had [...]

As our unelected Parliamentary Vice president Akhtar Chaudry (Socialist Left) prepares his bags to travel to the opening of the new swish shopping mall in Gaza (there cannot possibly be any other reason to go, the Red Cross has cancelled the so-called humanitarian crisis), he does take some time out to talk nonsense in public. His latest charge: The Progress party representative Per Willy Amundsen borders very near on being racist after citing official statistics showing that Muslims have the lowest participation in the Norwegian job market. In an interview with Vårt Land, he charges that this comparison is akin to the national socialist party’s agitation in Germany in the 1930s: “substitute Muslim for Jew and you will get an idea of the severity of the [Progress Party] claim.” Lets put this issue into context: On May 10, the Governmentally (yes, that refers to the current govt, where his party is coalition member commissioned report “Welfare and Migration” was made public. On page 135 of said report it says: 5.4.4 Immigrants participation in work related special programs Immigrants make up a larger share of registered unemployed persons. This may in part be caused by political priorities, but may also be interpreted [...]

Considering his great concern for liberty, peace and apparently also human rights (such a fashion item these days), would he consider revisiting Damascus this week? Only in the last 56 hours or so, the lifeblood of more than 120 souls have flooded Syrian streets, and one cannot but to marvel at the lack of political, even humanistic astuteness of such clever manipulators as Gullvåg. How could he have chosen Damascus, how could he have chosen Beirut, even Amman to feature his art? People there have not and will not for a long while yet, be able to express their thoughts, their ideas, not even their desires for a better future for themselves and their children. Gunned down, like cattle for slaughter, that is how Arab brethren with a dream of a dignified life have been killed. And idiots like Gullvåg have kissed the lazy bottoms of those who stole the power, the representation of the Arab street, and danced on the graves of the more than 12 million dead in futile squabbles between Arab dictators with a megalomania issue. I just wonder how Gullvåg and his friends can enjoy the blood-stenched coffee in fancy neighborhoods of Damascus, while behind the [...]

It is laudable that PA prime minister Fayyad now condemns these attacks, but condemning after the fact is not the same as preventing the terrorism in the first place Speaking one way in English, another in Arabic also cuts no ice, we are up to over 60 incidents of terror in less than 2 weeks, comprising the Fogler massacre, barrage of rockets over Southern Israel, and now this blast in Jerusalem. I think Israel exercises super human patience with genocidal Hamas, PA incitement. Maybe we could as comrade Støre to put in a word for Israel, he keeps calling the butchers in Damascus to “promote” peace. Prof. M.
Obviously, on a scale from 1 – 10, events unfolding in Libya, Japan; mounting pressure in Syria, Yemen, Saudi are very valid reasons for press to momentarily have abandoned their otherwise pathological obsession with Israel. On the other hand, maybe the news of more than 50 rockets launched against civil targets in Israel proper is an embarrassing reminder for the press that they have for too long focused on Israel, because it is a convenient target, rather than getting busy with uncovering abysmal human rights crimes in less than democratic states around the world, verbatim Michael White of the Guardian: And us? I have always sensed liberal, middle class ill-ease in going after stories about immigration, legal or otherwise, about welfare fraud or the less attractive tribal habits of the working class, which is more easily ignored altogether. Toffs, including royal ones, Christians, especially popes, governments of Israel, and US Republicans are more straightforward targets. Just as we read that Libyan loyalists (are they really?) have no qualms bringing their tender babes to battlefield, our FM tries to fool us into believing that we are not at war, looking strangely out of tune with colleague Faremo at defense ministry, who tells [...]

Norway has condemned the murder of an Israeli family on the West Bank. Perhaps we should go further. Perhaps we should acknowledge that in our own little, well-intended way, Norway shares a certain responsibility. The clip above shows how PA television glorifies terrorist Dalal Mughrabi. Sadly, this sort of propaganda appears to be standard fare for the PA and Hamas alike. The purpose of such television shows is to strengthen Palestinian resolve to fight, not only against Israel, but against Israeli civilians and Jews. Seeing as how the PA, and as such PA television, is heavily bankrolled by Norway, does not Norway bear some responsibility for the consequences of the propaganda which PA television broadcasts? In 2008, Palwatch noted: One of those misled by the PA into making a false statement has been Norway’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jonas Gahr Støre. In response to a recent question posed in the Norwegian Parliament about hate and terror promotion on PA TV (Fatah) that may be financed by Norway, the FM said: “The [Norwegian] Government dissociates itself from any use of TV programs as a direct [way] of spreading hate or inciting terrorism. It is particularly revolting when such programs are [...]

We Norwegians are no dumdums but sometimes the pure viciousness of life makes us confused and angry. Often, and for no particular good reason, we are instructed to be angry with Israel. Latma pokes us in the ribs twice (above), over support to NGOs and the embassy scandal. In one of the scenes we see blond-haired “Johann” financing Shalom Achshav (Peace now), an organization which Norway is a heavy contributor to. While this is not necessarily a bad thing in isolation, it fills out the picture of how Norwegian foreign policy might be perceived as less helpful than most Norwegian would like to believe. For more fact, visit NGO Monitor on Norwegian NGO funding, excerpt below: The Norwegian government provides tens of millions of Norwegian kroner (NOK) annually to politicized NGOs that operate in the Palestinian Authority and Gaza. Some of these NGOs are involved in anti-Israel boycott campaigns and the Stop the Wall Campaign in Norway. Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), which received NOK 49 million from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) in 2007 for its work with the Palestinians, accused Israel of “war crimes” and “collective punishment,” is active [...]
