The Norwegian Government’s hypocrisy re-exposed: “the most evil company in the world” is the second largest share holder in “Norsk Hydro” Brazilian Vale, which Norwegian Hydro has a tight partnership with, only accepts the bare minimum of social responsibility, according to a new poll where Greenpeace ranked the Norwegian Hydro partner as the “the world’s most evil company”. Swiss Greenpeace has for the eighth consecutive year, voted for the world’s most evil companies in the competition “Public Eye Award”. In March last year Norwegian Hydro acquired much of the Vale’s aluminum business. In return, Vale received money, got rid of debt and took over Hydro shares. This means that Vale is the second largest shareholder in Norwegian Hydro, with 21.64 percent of the shares. The Norwegian government, the Ministry of Trade and Development, is the largest shareholder, with 34.26 percent of Hydro’s shares. VALE: In the midst of Amazonian rainforest Vale is constructing the Belo Monte dam with devastating consequences for the region’s unique biodiversity and indigenous tribes. The same Norwegian Government excluded Israel’s Elbit Systems Ltd. from the country’s vast global pension-fund portfolio, the largest investment fund in Europe, because of ethical concerns – Why ? The argument was that Elbit makes [...]

Lifted from VG. Applause to Skartveit for this eminent oped The great betrayal Synagogue OSLO (AP) We were unable to protect our Jewish compatriots during the war. And today we are unable to give them the security they need. Do we simply not care? OpEd by Hanne Skartveit In the street where I lived for some years, just outside Washington, DC, we had a neighbor that almost every day dragged a large box and out of his car. When he was driving the kids to soccer practice, he dragged the box into the hallway of the house. And when he got home, he put the box back in the trunk of the car. The box was filled with blankets, flashlights, water and dried food. The Jewish family, who eventually became our good friends, had kept the box in the car since the terrorist attack on U.S. 11 September 2001. Al-Qaeda, who was behind the attack, had already urged Muslims to kill Americans and their allies – everywhere. Jews know from historical experience, that those who come with such threats, act according to what they say. Jews also know that anti-Semitism is alive all over the world. It either began or ended with the Holocaust, the industrial [...]

Lifted from Dagbladet, but also mentioned in other media. Faremo to reassess Synagogue security needs – Is in constant contact with police and the Police Security Services. The Minister of Justice Grete Faremo (Labour) is reviewing the safety precautions in place for the Synagogue in Oslo, and is in constant contact with the police and the police and the security services. Earlier this year, the Jewish community asked for support for security measures at the synagogue in Oslo. Previously, the community was denied such support for enhanced access control, as well as physical and electronic protection against intruders in community centers. The Ministry of Justice has now confirmed that it will be carrying out a review of threats made against the community as well as a new assessment for the need for support, Vårt Land writes. Faremo did not say how long time the reassessment will take. The Ministry’s information service does not wish to comment why the reassessment of the security is carried out again. - We cannot comment on the background for our safety assessments. In general, the police continually evaluates the need to implement any special safety and protective measures. Ministry of Justice has an ongoing dialogue with the Police Security [...]

While the Norwegian media rightly now focuses on the ongoing atrocities in Syria, and even our FM has felt compelled to politely tell the naughty Assad regime off for the continuing blood bath, one may perhaps be sympathetic to editors’s decision to not cover news from Israel. However, since coverage of Israel continues to be tendentious and one-eyed, one must really wonder why no news outlet has mentioned that the Islamic Jihad accepts responsibility for a new barrage of rockets over Southern Israel again today. Schools were cancelled and thousands were at risk as the rockets hit random targets. Why this reluctance to analyze the desperation friends of the Assad’s must feel as their previously safe dungeons now have to be vacated? Hizballah-Nasrallah now clearly sees the writing on the wall, and Hamas-Mashaal is now touring potential friendly countries who can host his gang of murders. In fact, Hamas is now in such a bad situation that Mashaal, much to the chagrin of Hamas boss In Gaza, Haniyeh, had to do a bit of canossa style crawling and go to Cairo to suck up to Abbas in the fourth meeting between the feuding Palestinian factions since May 2011. It would [...]

Lifted from Vårt Land Record Norwegian support to Israel More Norwegians buy Israeli goods, provide financial support and join the pro-Israel organizations. By: Lise Marit Kalstad and Olav Solvang Norway set a new record in the import of goods from Israel in 2011. In the last year Norway purchased Israeli goods for NOK 722 million, the corresponding number for 2010 was NOK 653 million, the newspaper Norway Today writes. Also the Norwegian exports to Israel increased, according to figures from Statistics Norway (SSB). - The main reason for the increase is that the Israelis produce high quality products in a number of areas, says the leader Dag Abrahamsen in the Norwegian-Israeli Chamber of Commerce to Norway Today. Increased involvement. Abrahamsen points at the same time that the Norwegian trade with Israel is not particularly high yet. - It is gratifying that the amount increases, but on the other hand, we have still a long way to go before we are in line with our Scandinavian neighbors, he said. The organization With Israel for Peace (MIFF) has nearly tripled its membership over the past five years. They now have over 5,300 members, and the goal is to round 6000 before the summer. - This is [...]

At a time when the rest of the world are slowly, ever so gradually starting to notice the atrocities that go on in Syria (but also many other places on our beautiful planet), one would have thought that the Norwegian People’s Aid would at least have mentioned the word Syria, somewhere, anywhere, on its web pages. But nope, not a word, yet NRK, who cannot find too much muck to write about Israel, now finally is reporting on the slaughter that goes on in Syria. But the Norwegian People’s Aid rather feel that the focus should be singly put on Israel, so they have published a blog where in addition to the usual “specialist” knowledge, that Israeli settlements are in violation of international Law. Interestingly, this is being repeated ad nauseam, but could we please have the reference to the international court final verdict that confirms this is so – last time I checked, this was far form being an established truth. Nevertheless, on and on they harp, here a translation of one of their blog entries.
“Dear all, This year marks 70 years since the “Danube” cast off from this quay, and embarked on a voyage of shame . 532 Jews were brutally stowed on board. Only nine returned. One of them was Samuel Steinmann. He is the last survivor. I’m especially glad you are here with us. Today we remember the millions of innocent people who were wiped out in History’s most heinous genocide. We remember all of the Norwegian Jews who were murdered. We remember the Roma, the disabled, gays and other victims of the Hitler regime’s cruelty. The Holocaust will forever be a stain in the history of Mankind. Thursday 26 November 1942 the Holocaust came to Norway. One of the many who were arrested that day was Ruth Maier. Her story is well known thanks to Gunvor Hofmo and Jan Erik Vold. At dawn on 26 November heavy boots stomped up the stairs in the rooming house “Englehjemmet” in Oslo. Shortly after, the frightened girlfriends of a humble Jewish girl, saw her being led out the door from her home in Dalsbergstien 3 The last glimpse of Ruth Maier is that she is pushed into a black car by two powerful Norwegian police officers. Five [...]

Finally, the first real step towards acknowledging our own role in the tragedy. Only after accepting responsibility, can the hard work of forgiveness and the arduous task of reconstructing relations begin. Lifted from Aftenposten (by Elisabeth Rodum and Halvor Hegtun) PM Jens Stoltenberg (Labour) deeply regretted the deportation of Norwegian Jews at the Holocaust Memorial ceremony in Oslo on friday. This autumn marks 70 years since, “the Norwegian Holocaust.” During the WWII, 772 Norwegian Jews or refugees were deported from Norway to the Nazi extermination camps. Only 34 survived. - The murders iare without doubt the work of the Nazi. But it was Norwegians who carried out the arrests. And it was the Norwegians who drove the cars, Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said in his speech. - Without denying the Nazis’s responsibility, it’s time to acknowledge that the police and other Norwegians participated in the arrests and deportations of Jews. It is now incumbent upon us, to t to express our deep regret that this could happen on Norwegian soil, said Stoltenberg. - Many open wounds 50 years after the war, the Parliament established a financial settlement, collectively and individually, for the liquidation of the Norwegian Jews. Just under NOK 200 million was allocated, of [...]

Bjørn Arild Hatlem - I think certainly that the Prime Minister should apologize. There are many wounds that are still open and an apology is long over, historian Kjersti Dybvig at University College in London say to dagen.no.
Today, at 3 PM, our PM Jens Stoltenberg is widely expected to officially and formally apologize to the Norwegian Jewish community for the state sponsored persecution and murder of Norwegian citizens with a Jewish background during the WWII. Whatever form that eventual apology finally would be presented as, does not detract from the perception that Norway continues to send mixed signals to our own Jewish community as well as our well documented partiality in the ME conflict. Whilst we as a nation, prepare to possibly apologize to our Jewish minority, former Bishop of Oslo, Gunnar Stålsett led a rally against extremism. In his address, he said among other things Through the years we have paraded against racism and war. We have turned our backs on neo-Nazism anti-Semitism. We stand shoulder to shoulder, Christians, Jews, Muslims, believers and humanists. Today too, we stand together for human dignity and tolerance. Fine words, but actions speak louder than words. Stålsett himself should look in himself before preaching tolerance to others, judging by his own record, he leaves a bit to be desired in that department. To make it even more complex, how can a rally that features Lars Gule as a speaker, remotely [...]

Unlike his prompt, however misplaced condemnation of Israel back in June, when Syrian demonstrators broke a fence and entered Israel, our good FM Støre has finally found the opportunity to condemn the Jerusalem Mufti’s call for murdering Jews. However, he had to be prompted to do it; it was only after a letter from Dagfinn Høybråten, a member of Parliament, representing the Christian Democrats, that FM Støre officially took a stance. Here is the story, as delivered by dagen.no Støre deplores the Grand Mufti’s statements Norway deplores the statements from the Mufti of Jerusalem that “the day of redemption for Muslims will come when they start to kill Jews.” The Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap) says this in a written reply to MP DagfinnHøybråten (KrF). By Tor Weibye - This is a remarkably positive response because the foreign minister will take this matter seriously, Høybråten says to Dagen.no. The Foreign Minister writes in his response that the Mufti Husein’s statement appears to be hostile to Jews and are not likely to create confidence between the parties. - I will ask our office in Al Ram to meet the mufti to express that Norway is opposed to the statements he made during the ceremony. Totally unacceptable Høybråten maintains that the Mufti’s statements, whether quotes or anything else, are totally unacceptable. - These statements are made by the leadership, from quarters where one would expect a more responsible attitude, and they were made as an intrinsic part of a celebration in favor of the ruling party. This makes it imperative that Norway clearly marks our position. - So I am pleased that the Foreign Minister will take this very seriously and that he has [...]

Lifted from miff.no NTB ‘s extreme over focus on Israel II No one knows for sure how many were killed in the climax of the Sri Lankan civil war, but it is estimated to be from 10 to 20 times more than the total number of people killed in the conflict between Palestinians and Israel over the past four years. In the same period, the NTB mentioned Israel six times more often than Sri Lanka. Over the last four years, news agency NTB just mentioned Sri Lanka more than Israel in one of 48 months. Israel is mentioned in a total of 6,851 articles, Sri Lanka in 1152 articles, a search in the media database Atekst shows. MIFF has previously documented NTB extreme cover of Israel in relation to Egypt. The civil war in Sri Lanka has cost up to hundreds of thousands of lives since 1983, among them several thousands civilians. The largest loss of civilian life took place in the last five months of the war, from January 2009 to May 2009. Estimates vary from 3000 to 5000 civilians (Sri Lankan authorities) to 40,000 (Gordon Weiss, a former official in the UN). In addition, large losses of the contending parties, the Sri [...]

Going back about 8 weeks or so, a story much commented upon both here and elsewhere was the one where it transpired that Norway declined a request from Israel to receive a delegation to study the Norwegian oil industry, its technology and strategies. The following story may explain this puzzling rejection by Norway, we are in cahoots with Lebanon who now has convinced that the oil fields Israel has discovered really should belong to Lebanon Ready for Lebanese oil adventure - with Norwegian assistance The conflict-ridden country is ready to start oil and gas activities in the disputedsea area. Norwegian officials have drawn up regulations - and the Lebanese will have an “oil fund” after the Norwegian model. Lebanon is perhaps a term more often associated with wars and conflicts than oil and wealth. The small country sandwiched between the Mediterranean Sea, Syria and Israel has for decades been a political stage where a number of players have openly played out their agendas - whether they have been Syrian, American, Israeli or Iranian. In the wake of the country’s reconstruction after the civil war, Lebanon has incurred huge debts, which it has had limited opportunities to serve because of lack of natural resources or a strong export industry. But in recent years, the ever-changing governments have spotted an option off its coast: [...]

This will make many a ham fisted bureaucrat who has googled a wee bit too much go bonkers; I can virtually hear the gnashing of teeth and furious rejections from academics with tunnel vision… But will this be enough to convince Norwegian legislators that the Jews too, now should have full religious freedom in Norway? ‘Pre-slaughter stunning less humane than shechita’ By JUDY SIEGEL-ITZKOVICH “Anti-kosher meat bill delayed in Dutch legislature due to Israeli research,” TAU psychiatrist says. An Israeli study on electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) for severely depressed or psychotic patients has apparently disproved the claim that the similar process of stunning animals before slaughter is humane and minimizes their suffering. Prof. Rael Strous, a psychiatrist at Tel Aviv University’s Sackler Faculty of Medicine and the Be’er Ya’acov Mental Health Center, has just published an article on the subject in the journal Meat Science together with Bar-Ilan University researcher Dr. Ari Zivotofsky. The researchers reached the conclusion that electric stunning of animals, often advocated as kinder than kosher slaughter, “is in fact cruel and barbaric,” as if one administered ECT without first giving patients sedation and/or general anesthesia. The team studied ECT given to depressed patients – in which a strong electric [...]

Israel-bashers do not stand back from serving the dirty lie or two in order to further their case, here miff.no provides documentation from the Sadat-Begin Center that Israel over-complies with its obligations vz water resources. On the other side, the Palestinians routinely breach their agreements. Not sure if this will impress the pathological Israel hater, but for the rest of us it may come in handy to have these facts ready: Israel complies with its water commitments. Israel gives the Palestinians more water than what they have committed themselves to do, according to a new study from the Sadat-Begin Center. The Palestinians accusations against Israel with regards to water resource management are unfounded. The truth is that Palestinians are wasting water instead of making efforts to ensure more efficient water use. In addition, the Palestinians steal water from Israel by illegal wells and by illegally connecting to Israel’s water network. The study also shows how the current negative water situation can be an opportunity for positive cooperation between the two parties. Israel is accused of denying the Palestinians water rights and not to provide enough water to Palestinians in the West Bank in accordance with what was negotiated under the Oslo Accords. A [...]
