At a time when the rest of the world are slowly, ever so gradually starting to notice the atrocities that go on in Syria (but also many other places on our beautiful planet), one would have thought that the Norwegian People’s Aid would at least have mentioned the word Syria, somewhere, anywhere, on its web pages. But nope, not a word, yet NRK, who cannot find too much muck to write about Israel, now finally is reporting on the slaughter that goes on in Syria. But the Norwegian People’s Aid rather feel that the focus should be singly put on Israel, so they have published a blog where in addition to the usual “specialist” knowledge, that Israeli settlements are in violation of international Law. Interestingly, this is being repeated ad nauseam, but could we please have the reference to the international court final verdict that confirms this is so – last time I checked, this was far form being an established truth. Nevertheless, on and on they harp, here a translation of one of their blog entries. The author, Kjetil Østnor is a representative of the common committee on Palestine, whilst at the same time being a prominent member of [...]

Unlike his prompt, however misplaced condemnation of Israel back in June, when Syrian demonstrators broke a fence and entered Israel, our good FM Støre has finally found the opportunity to condemn the Jerusalem Mufti’s call for murdering Jews. However, he had to be prompted to do it; it was only after a letter from Dagfinn Høybråten, a member of Parliament, representing the Christian Democrats, that FM Støre officially took a stance. Here is the story, as delivered by dagen.no Støre deplores the Grand Mufti’s statements Norway deplores the statements from the Mufti of Jerusalem that “the day of redemption for Muslims will come when they start to kill Jews.” The Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap) says this in a written reply to MP DagfinnHøybråten (KrF). By Tor Weibye - This is a remarkably positive response because the foreign minister will take this matter seriously, Høybråten says to Dagen.no. The Foreign Minister writes in his response that the Mufti Husein’s statement appears to be hostile to Jews and are not likely to create confidence between the parties. - I will ask our office in Al Ram to meet the mufti to express that Norway is opposed to the statements he made during the ceremony. Totally unacceptable Høybråten maintains that the Mufti’s statements, whether quotes or anything else, are totally unacceptable. - These statements are made by the leadership, from quarters where one would expect a more responsible attitude, and they were made as an intrinsic part of a celebration in favor of the ruling party. This makes it imperative that Norway clearly marks our position. - So I am pleased that the Foreign Minister will take this very seriously and that he has [...]

Israel-bashers do not stand back from serving the dirty lie or two in order to further their case, here miff.no provides documentation from the Sadat-Begin Center that Israel over-complies with its obligations vz water resources. On the other side, the Palestinians routinely breach their agreements. Not sure if this will impress the pathological Israel hater, but for the rest of us it may come in handy to have these facts ready: Israel complies with its water commitments. Israel gives the Palestinians more water than what they have committed themselves to do, according to a new study from the Sadat-Begin Center. The Palestinians accusations against Israel with regards to water resource management are unfounded. The truth is that Palestinians are wasting water instead of making efforts to ensure more efficient water use. In addition, the Palestinians steal water from Israel by illegal wells and by illegally connecting to Israel’s water network. The study also shows how the current negative water situation can be an opportunity for positive cooperation between the two parties. Israel is accused of denying the Palestinians water rights and not to provide enough water to Palestinians in the West Bank in accordance with what was negotiated under the Oslo Accords. A [...]

With reference to yesterday’s post that Norwegian Jews are reluctant to be registered as members of the Jewish congregations. Vårt Land, which prides itself on its high ethical profile, tends to slip dangerously low in actually exercising their own ethical ideals; here is a sample of what passes for polite and suitable opinion on the topic of what Norway can do to protect its Jewish minority, by a man called Per Elias Vågenes (who, as far as I have been able to ascertain, has no professional relationship to Vårt Land, he merely expresses his own personal opinions) There can hardly be one upright person in Norway who does not think that Jews, or other minorities, should enjoy the right to feel safe in the Norwegian society. Information regarding the Holocaust crime is compulsory in the Norwegian school system, and it is quite normal that 6th form pupils travel to Auschwitz to see the memorial over these sites of crimes with their own eyes. But the attitude to the state of Israel has changed. After the war, the slogan was ” a people without a land to land without a people “. The average Norwegian did not know any better.
This weekend, as part of the 3 year anniversary for the Gaza campaign, the NRK gave the best prime time slot for Saturday night entertainment to medic Mads Gilbert, portraying him as a life saving hero in Tromsø and Gaza, as usual a one-sided, glorification program designed to make Dr. Gilbert look like a saint. However, they jumped the bit where he personally blocked military medics advanced surgery courses, something which would have allowed Norway to have two full surgical teams ready to be dispatched to conflict areas where Norwegian soldiers are deployed – but which we obviously don’t have now! In Sweden, when the Swedish national broadcaster aired Løkkeberg’s now roundly ridiculed Tears of Gaza, the leader of the Swedish Israel Information Center, Liza Abramovicz, filed a formal complaint with The Swedish Broadcasting Commission. According to Abramovicz; I believe the decision to screeing of the film, Tears of Gaza breaches with journalistic ethical principles. According to the SVT spokesperson, the film is an antiwar film, but it only pot rays one side and that is a peculiarly demonizing view. It is a very strong and uncomfortable film, which shows the suffering of the children of Gaza during the Gaza [...]

A reader sent me this today: In Aftenposten today: This news piece was on the “Home” web page, but has been moved in to the “Foreign news” section. Notwithstanding our disgust with the brain-drained settlers in question, and justified coverage by news outlets, there are two aspects that are noteworthy: 1. The caption reads: “Mistenker jødiske bosettere for nytt moskéangrep For andre gang på to dager skal ekstremistiske jødiske bosettere ha satt fyr på en palestinsk moské.” “Jewish settlers suspected for the new mosque attack For the second time in two days extremist Jewish settlers supposedly set fire to a Palestinian mosque”. Aftenposten has written op-eds and editorials where they charge Jews in Norway for confusing and mixing up Aftenpostens comments on “Israel” with challenges of “Jews”. It is then ridculously inconsistent of Aftenposten to highlight the assault as beeing done by “Jews”, instead of “Israelis”. (Is this another of “Reuters” takes ?) In comparison, Aftenposten does not generally describe Palestinian terrorist actions as “Moslem Terrorists”. 2. The article ends with: “Israel considers the outposts built without authorization in the occupied West Bank as illegal and often send troops to remove them. The international community, however, considers all settlements in the West [...]

Following todays thunderstorm in the wake of his scandalous article suggesting that Israel may have something to do with the terrible 22/7 tragedy, Tunander now says that it is all a terrible misunderstanding and that he in fact was trying to show that Israel had nothing to do with it. Tunander: – I have been misunderstood. PRIO researcher thinks his critics misunderstood: I argue against Israeli involvement in 22/7. PRIO researcher Ola Tunander received criticism from several quarters after he published the article “inspirers, stakeholders, initiation master and investors in Breivik’s world” in the latest issue of Nytt Norsk Tidsskrift. Journalist Øyvind Stream believes it goes horribly wrong when Tunander insinuates that Israel is behind or was involved in 22/7. Conservative Member of Parliament Thorbjorn Røe Isaksen think it is remarkable that a peace researcher from PRIO can suggest that the terrorist was being manipulated. Writer Jan Arild Snoen is highly critical of Tunander’s lack of source criticism, and put quotation marks around his “research”. PhD student in history at the University of Oslo, John Due Enstad, writes in an article in Aftenposten that he believes the article is an insult to the public.
A couple of days ago, we referred once more to the infamous book, Daddy is a pirate, by medic and author Hans Sande, and how the Israeli embassy was infuriated by the Norwegian Cultural Council’s decision to sponsor this book, which casts Israeli’s as beasts. The Israeli ambassador complained, and today we have the response by the Minister of Culture, Anniken Huitfeldt: From Vårt Land Huitfeldt does not regret pirate book The Government does not want to apologize for the children’s book “Daddy is a pirate” that presents Israeli soldiers in a negative light. This is the reply the Minister of Culture Anniken Huitfeldt (AP) writes to the Israeli ambassador in Norway, Michael Eligal. The letter is a response to the ambassadors complaint that the children’s book ”Daddy is a pirate” was published with support from the Norwegian Cultural Council, which means that the book will now be distributed among Norwegian libraries. The formal complaint did, among other things, state that “The way Israel and its soldiers, a friendly country and a friendly army, are presented in a book for young children, is terrible.” In the letter to the Israeli ambassador, the Minister of Culture Huitfeldt assures that the Norwegian government has a strong commitment to combat all forms of anti-Semitism. The Minister also emphasizes that she has duly noted the ambassador’s views and concerns on this matter, the newspaper Dagen writes. Huitfeldt informs that all the books that are supported by the Cultural Council are carefully reviewed by several expert committees with regards to the [...]

A new Norwegian journal, which incidentally bears just that name (Nytt Norsk Tidsskrift), has published an article by Prio peace researcher Professor Ola Tunander. This article has caused several indignant responses, where respondents question Tunanders mental sanity. A very unusual feat in Norway, and finally one that certainly will rip the shiny wings off that incongruous grotty excuse of a serious scientific institution. I have chosen to translate the reply of PhD student Johannes Due Enstad, but also found Øyvind Strømmen’s article in Minervanett Conspiracies on Israel and 22/7 both entertaining and superbly written. I have rarely read such biting criticism in the Norwegian press. While I shudder at the content of Tunander’s insinuations, I am delighted and grateful that it is not only me who reacts to the horrible stench that emanates from his cave. I invite you to read and enjoy the timely response from a representative of Norway’s future academia. Conspiranoia on 22/7 and Israel Johannes Due Enstad PhD student in history, UiO PRIO Professor Ola Tunander claims in an article in the journal Nytt Norsk Tidsskrift that Israel may have been behind 22 July. The article is a mishmashof insinuations and representations of hidden connections, and raises doubtsabout the author as well as journal editorial judgments. The goal of the new journal Nytt Norsk Tidsskrift (NNT) is be “to provide insight and profiled [...]

The world according to Butenschøn: Time after time, from the rostrum of the UN in New York, then, reiterated in Geneva and just about any other venue that foolishly has provided access to that genocidal lunatic who stole the presidency in Iran, the world has heard how the Iranian leader has promised to wipe out Israel and kill every Jew. Now, the regime in Teheran has repeatedly been found with its hands down the yellow cake jar, and has also been hanging out with the shadiest guys in the atomic bomb neighborhood. Iran has consistently refused full insight into suspected sites of nuclear development, insisting that they are only pursuing peaceful nuclear means such as energy, research. Time after time, Iran has refused to even discuss the matter, but doggedly claim they are a peace seeking nation. A peace seeking nation that aggressively is promising to eradicate the State of Israel. And Butenschøn? He seems to think that the West has failed to understand that the Iranians really, really want to dialogue, but takes the opportunity to tell the Norwegians, that in case the conflict between Iran and the West turns into a war, then it is Israel who is [...]

With this act, Norway is drawing closer to the end of the limb where good relations fall off. We may also suggest to the new director (who, to be accurate, has had no involvement with this decision, he was only appointed this week) for the Cultural Council, Yngve Slettholm, that he familiarizes himself with the EU’s working definition of anti-Semitism. He may see that Sande’s book grossly falls within the scope of these definitions. from Vårt Land Israel is furious over support for Norwegian book for children The Israeli Embassy reacted strongly to the Arts Council has purchased a children’s book by author Hans Sande where Israeli soldiers are portrayed in a bad light. Ambassador Michael Eligal has expressed his frustration in a letter to the Minister of Culture Anniken Huitfeldt (AP), according to Dagens Næringsliv. “The way Israel and its soldiers, a friendly country and a friendly army, are presented in a book for young children, is terrible,” said the letter. Eligal react especially on the book ”Daddy’s pirate” depicts Israeli soldiers as alcoholics. In addition, the reader allegedly gets the impression that Israel denies Palestinians water. The Cultural Council of procurement means that the book is distributed to Norwegian libraries. Eligal suggests that this government support can have consequences for the cooperation between Norway and Israel. The Ministry of Culture promises that the letter will be answered next week. linkscolor = "000000"; highlightscolor = "888888"; backgroundcolor = "FFFFFF"; channel = "none";

Has NRK finally been confronted with the consequences of giving free reins to fantasy and obscure intentions? This is not the first time the NRK has been asked to explain its editorial content, and its ability to comply with minimal standards of decorum. Notably, Israel has requested an inquiry into the institutionalized bias with regards to Israel. The inquiry was badly botched, provoking several journalists and later also the leader of the NRK broadcasting council to condemn it. Somebody said, you start with the Jews, or Israel, but end with something entirely different! UN COURT ATTACKS NRK Ny Tid 2011 11 29, Carima Tirillsdotter Heinesen Summary. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia has sent a letter to Norwegian state broadcaster NRK (And also Swedish state broadcaster Sveriges Radio) over a “Brennpunkt” program, which the court stated has grossly contorted the facts concerning the Srebrenica massacre. The court wants its views to be published in a relevant context. It is of interest to note that this program, which attempted to shift responsibility over the massacre on the Bosnian Muslim leadership also was strongly criticized by the PFU, the ethical board of Norwegian journalists. Nevertheless, the leader of the NRK, [...]

Two days ago, on November 29 2011, the psychiatric evaluation team delivered their recommendations on Anders Behring Breiviks mental health and capabilities to the court. The finding stunned the whole nation, by declaring him psychotic and suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. This means that although the trial won’t change substantially, ABB cannot be sentenced to regular prison, but will in all likelihood be committed to a mental health institution, probably for life. Now it turns out, that the political elites have not felt any obligation to await the findings of the psychiatric evaluation team, or complying with one of the basic checks and balances in our parliamentary democratic system: It is only the court, through its sworn officers and rightfully appointed specialists, that can expand on the mental health and mental capacities of a suspect. It is not a job we have delegated to our politicians, yet, Roger Ingebrigtsen, the State Secretary for the Ministry of Defense did exactly that at a lecture at the University of Ottawa, Canada, on November 25. Purportedly, the topic of the lecture was security challenges in the High North and on Norway’s extensive and important relationship to Russia. Ingebrigtsen will also discuss current NATO issues [...]
