Lifted from VG. Applause to Skartveit for this eminent oped The great betrayal Synagogue OSLO (AP) We were unable to protect our Jewish compatriots during the war. And today we are unable to give them the security they need. Do we simply not care? OpEd by Hanne Skartveit In the street where I lived for some years, just outside Washington, DC, we had a neighbor that almost every day dragged a large box and out of his car. When he was driving the kids to soccer practice, he dragged the box into the hallway of the house. And when he got home, he put the box back in the trunk of the car. The box was filled with blankets, flashlights, water and dried food. The Jewish family, who eventually became our good friends, had kept the box in the car since the terrorist attack on U.S. 11 September 2001. Al-Qaeda, who was behind the attack, had already urged Muslims to kill Americans and their allies – everywhere. Jews know from historical experience, that those who come with such threats, act according to what they say. Jews also know that anti-Semitism is alive all over the world. It either began or ended with the Holocaust, the industrial [...]

Lifted from Dagbladet, but also mentioned in other media. Faremo to reassess Synagogue security needs – Is in constant contact with police and the Police Security Services. The Minister of Justice Grete Faremo (Labour) is reviewing the safety precautions in place for the Synagogue in Oslo, and is in constant contact with the police and the police and the security services. Earlier this year, the Jewish community asked for support for security measures at the synagogue in Oslo. Previously, the community was denied such support for enhanced access control, as well as physical and electronic protection against intruders in community centers. The Ministry of Justice has now confirmed that it will be carrying out a review of threats made against the community as well as a new assessment for the need for support, Vårt Land writes. Faremo did not say how long time the reassessment will take. The Ministry’s information service does not wish to comment why the reassessment of the security is carried out again. - We cannot comment on the background for our safety assessments. In general, the police continually evaluates the need to implement any special safety and protective measures. Ministry of Justice has an ongoing dialogue with the Police Security [...]

While the Norwegian media rightly now focuses on the ongoing atrocities in Syria, and even our FM has felt compelled to politely tell the naughty Assad regime off for the continuing blood bath, one may perhaps be sympathetic to editors’s decision to not cover news from Israel. However, since coverage of Israel continues to be tendentious and one-eyed, one must really wonder why no news outlet has mentioned that the Islamic Jihad accepts responsibility for a new barrage of rockets over Southern Israel again today. Schools were cancelled and thousands were at risk as the rockets hit random targets. Why this reluctance to analyze the desperation friends of the Assad’s must feel as their previously safe dungeons now have to be vacated? Hizballah-Nasrallah now clearly sees the writing on the wall, and Hamas-Mashaal is now touring potential friendly countries who can host his gang of murders. In fact, Hamas is now in such a bad situation that Mashaal, much to the chagrin of Hamas boss In Gaza, Haniyeh, had to do a bit of canossa style crawling and go to Cairo to suck up to Abbas in the fourth meeting between the feuding Palestinian factions since May 2011. It would [...]

The Embassy refers to the knifings at Solli plass in Oslo on January the 8th[1]; and several assaults taking place in the parks of the city recently. “Be alert concerning your surroundings at present, Observe potential threats before they materialize”, the Embassy writes in a letter sent to US citizens in Oslo. Americans are recommended to follow these five precautionary rules to experience a safe everyday life in the capital. If possible, do not walk alone in evenings. If you are outside in evenings, walk with others or travel by bus, subway or taxi. Stay in well-lit areas, where others are present..
Remarkably balanced and correct, but who is prepared to believe that Leibovich actually called the Gaza terrorists “militants”? It has taken the press a mighty long time to get these facts, easily available for many months now…. maybe I am cynical, but I think these are moves to prepare the ground to once more fault Israel. ISRAEL ARMING FOR A NEW WAR IN GAZA Verdens Gang 201201 09 Erlend Skevik The number of rockets launched at Israel from Gaza has more than tripled throughout the last year. The IDF is now preparing for a new war against Hamas. In 2011 altogether 627 rockets were fired from the Gaza strip at assorted targets in Southern Israel. These are the highest figures of attacks against Israel by militant groups since the war three years ago. “The goal of the 2009 operation was the reduction of the numbers of rockets. We now see militants having increased access to weaponry. Also, the ranges of the rockets have increased from 40 kilometers to 60. This means they can reach not only targets in the South of Israel, but also densely populated areas surrounding Tel Aviv”, says spokeswoman Avital Leibovich of the IDF to VG net.
First an admission – one Norwegian newspaper did report on this incident – the Christian daily Dagen. Excellent as though it is, it is hardly a paper read by your average Norwegian, so for the majority of Norwegians, who rely on NRK, Dagbladet, VG and Aftenposten for coverage of domestic affairs, this one has slipped under the radar. Jewish funeral procession “attacked” in Oslo When the Jewish man Gabriel Philip Stiris (91) was buried in Oslo early in december, an unknown man appeared and shouted «fuck the jews» and behaved in a manner that was threatening. Ove Eikje - We were shocked when this happened, and have never heard of anything like this, his son Morten Stiris tells Dagen. He was about to shovel earth on the coffin when the unknown man expressed his hatred of Jews. The man stood outside the fence of the Jewish cemetery. Maybe he had discovered the obituary in the newspaper Aftenposten, and knew that a Jewish burial would take place at this time? Chase The man raised his left arm to a Nazi salute, and he seemed threatening. This was a very deliberate action, my father was the only Jew who was buried that day, says Morten [...]

Two days ago, we published the story on how Norwegian media reported 3 Palestinians killed in Israeli air raids on Gaza, but without mentioning the context of rocket attacks imminent terror threats against Israeli civilian targets. Today, VG has a follow up story on this, this time focusing on the moment of death of the Palestinian terrorist – the first 2/3 of the article is essentially identical with what I previously reported, but the last bit gives a truly twisted presentation of facts: Father and son killed Thursday last week one of the leaders of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, Issam al-Batsh, was killed when Israeli aircrafts attacked a car in the middle of a busy street in Gaza City. According to Hermann, Batsh was involved in planning a terrorist attack in Eilat in 2007, in which three Israelis were killed. The defence spokesman confirmed that the attack against the car to the al-Batsh was carefully planned, and said Israel had intelligence indicating that al-Batsh was planning a new attack against Israel the day after. - We believe that our attacks on targets in Gaza has prevented more attacks against Israel, and helps to reduce these groups’ ability to hit targets in Israel, he said.
this is NRKs rendering of the story, other news papers have more or less the same angle. Palestinian killed in air strike A 22 year old Palestinian and 5 others injured in Israeli air strikes against targets on the Gaza strip early Wednesday morning. The killed person belongs to the al-Quds-brigades, the armed faction of Islamic Holy War. According to Palestinian eye witnesses, the Israelis carried out two attacks against targets east of the Zeitun neighborhood in Gaza City. The israeli governments army (yes, they actually call it that!) says in a press statement that the attacks were directed against militant (I am willing to bet you anything that the IDF said terrorist, not militant) Palestinians who planned to fire rockets against Israel. Technically, all the information is correct, but why the head line? When will they ever write something like Rocket attack against innocent Israeli civilians averted? linkscolor = "000000"; highlightscolor = "888888"; backgroundcolor = "FFFFFF"; channel = "none";

Now, the regime in Teheran has repeatedly been found with its hands down the yellow cake jar, and has also been hanging out with the shadiest guys in the atomic bomb neighborhood. Iran has consistently refused full insight into suspected sites of nuclear development, insisting that they are only pursuing peaceful nuclear means such as energy, research. Time after time, Iran has refused to even discuss the matter, but doggedly claim they are a peace seeking nation. A peace seeking nation that aggressively is promising to eradicate the State of Israel. And Butenschøn? He seems to think that the West has failed to understand that the Iranians really, really want to dialogue, but takes the opportunity to tell the Norwegians, that in case the conflict between Iran and the West turns into a war, then it is Israel who is [...]

The national debate following the investigation into the terror attacks has been anything but sober – anybody, who at any time may have expressed reservation about the pace and size of immigration, integration and multiculturalism, have found themselves cast in comparison with the mass murderer, and in the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of the Labor Youth has suggested that in addition to freedom to express ourselves freely, we now have the obligation to express ourselves responsibly (according to whose definition is not a problem he has bothered to expand upon). In a similar vein, some activists on the opposite side of the political divide, may on occasion have been a little too sensitive, and read the most sinister interpretations into quite innocent comments from a political opponent.
Credit where credit is due! VG is one of the few mainstream newspapers that reported on yesterday’s rocket attack from Gaza and describes how its impact was widely felt in Ashdod, an indication that the explosive load was powerful. The article does not stop there, but details how missiles smuggled from Libya may have gotten into Hamas’s hands and pose a real danger to Israel: Hamas can attack Israel with Gaddafi missiles by Lars Akerhaug (AP) New terrorist rockets from the Gaza Strip – Israeli air raids last night. Once again, Wednesday night rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip hitting the Israeli town of Ashdod. Residents felt the impact,which means that the rocket was powerful, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. Israeli F-16 aircrafts responded by attacking what the Israeli defense establishment describe as “terrorist targets” in the Gaza Strip. It is not known who was behind the night’s attack, but according to the Israeli newspaper, Hamas recently managed to smuggle powerful and advanced Russian missiles into the Strip, via Libya. The weapons must have disappeared from Gaddafi’s weapons arsenal and been smuggled through Egypt to the Gaza Strip. -The Israeli Defense Ministry says in a statement that the terror organization Hamas bears full responsibility for all terror activities originating from the Gaza Strip. Worrying The new arsenal of weapons in Palestinian hands is worrisome. It is assumed that smugglers took advantage of the chaotic situation in Libya to smuggle weapons into the Gaza Strip. Unguarded The smugglers broke into and helped themselves to large number of weapons from unguarded weapons caches in the aftermath of the last months fighting in the North African country. The anarchy that has characterized the border area between Egypt and [...]

We are all delighted that finally, Gilad Shalit is on his way home. Finally, after more than 5 years in captivity, his nightmare, and that of his family and friends, is finally coming to an end. The story has been widely reported in Norwegian media, predominantly as a very positive development. But some researchers read too much into the situation and seem to think that with this, we finally have proof that the political wing of Hamas (read, the good guys, according to people who are addicted to this theory) has outsmarted the militant wing (note militant, not terrorist). Nils Butenschøn (Norwegian Center for Human Rights) says to Vårt Land: this deal is a very interesting development, which can have positive political consequences…. This deal can lead to an easing of Israel’s blockade of Gaza and contribute to integrating Hamas into the political process. In time this can lead to a changed political climate. Another researcher, Nils Henrik Tuastad at PRIO is even more optimistic: Political victory. – This is a great political victory for the moderate wing of Hamas. Hamas may get a new and strengthened role, and the prisoner exchange may help facilitate Palestinian reconciliation. He points out [...]

Dagsavisen does not in the least worry about allowing extremists having a say on their debate forum. On october 5, they allowed a truly stunning proposal, signed by a Mr. Knut Vidar Paulsen, to dissolve Israel to replace it with a Palestinian state. The letter states among many very very peculiar positions: (I wonder if Mr. Paulsen and his friends remember to take their medication regularly) When the Palestinians present their case at the UN, there are many questions that have not been resolved, among them the status of Israel. The UNGA must solve these through a UN resolution. The Parliament must openly acknowledge this when the Palestinians approach the UN this fall. Another place he writes: More than 62 years of unsuccessful negotiations on a secular two state soluiton has not brough any solutions. Israeli atomic weapons and 62 year occupation of Palestine has prevented a redistributed and fair solution where Palestinian refugeescan return home. It gets better: In this context Norway shall signal to the UNSC and UNGA in October 2011, that we support a atom weapon free and secular one state solution for Palestine, with equal rights for Jews, Christians, Muslims and seculars within the end of [...]

Aside from a short notice in Idag, no other Norwegian newspaper has bothered to write about Assad’s threat to bomb Tel Aviv if the world should have the audacity to intervene in Syria like it has in Libya. Jpost brought a short report on this yesterday: Assad: If NATO attacks Syria, we’ll strike Tel Aviv By JPOST.COM STAFF 10/04/2011 18:32 Syrian President Bashar Assad warned western countries on Tuesday that if Syria comes under NATO attack it would fire missiles at Tel Aviv, Iranian semi-official news agency Fars reported. During a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmad Davutoglu Assad threatened: “If a crazy measure is taken against Damascus, I will need not more than 6 hours to transfer hundreds of rockets and missiles to the Golan Heights to fire them at Tel Aviv.” At the same time, reports that the Syrian regime threatens dissidents in exile has received some attention, but so far Norwegian human rights activists seem lukewarm to the idea of discussing, far less condemning this. In a similar manner, Syria’s detention of over 3000 people in the town of Rastan over the last 3 – 4 days has barely been reported. Unsurprisingly, peace activists who yearn for [...]
