“Dear all, This year marks 70 years since the “Danube” cast off from this quay, and embarked on a voyage of shame . 532 Jews were brutally stowed on board. Only nine returned. One of them was Samuel Steinmann. He is the last survivor. I’m especially glad you are here with us. Today we remember the millions of innocent people who were wiped out in History’s most heinous genocide. We remember all of the Norwegian Jews who were murdered. We remember the Roma, the disabled, gays and other victims of the Hitler regime’s cruelty. The Holocaust will forever be a stain in the history of Mankind. Thursday 26 November 1942 the Holocaust came to Norway. One of the many who were arrested that day was Ruth Maier. Her story is well known thanks to Gunvor Hofmo and Jan Erik Vold. At dawn on 26 November heavy boots stomped up the stairs in the rooming house “Englehjemmet” in Oslo. Shortly after, the frightened girlfriends of a humble Jewish girl, saw her being led out the door from her home in Dalsbergstien 3 The last glimpse of Ruth Maier is that she is pushed into a black car by two powerful Norwegian police officers. Five [...]

Unlike his prompt, however misplaced condemnation of Israel back in June, when Syrian demonstrators broke a fence and entered Israel, our good FM Støre has finally found the opportunity to condemn the Jerusalem Mufti’s call for murdering Jews. However, he had to be prompted to do it; it was only after a letter from Dagfinn Høybråten, a member of Parliament, representing the Christian Democrats, that FM Støre officially took a stance. Here is the story, as delivered by dagen.no Støre deplores the Grand Mufti’s statements Norway deplores the statements from the Mufti of Jerusalem that “the day of redemption for Muslims will come when they start to kill Jews.” The Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap) says this in a written reply to MP DagfinnHøybråten (KrF). By Tor Weibye - This is a remarkably positive response because the foreign minister will take this matter seriously, Høybråten says to Dagen.no. The Foreign Minister writes in his response that the Mufti Husein’s statement appears to be hostile to Jews and are not likely to create confidence between the parties. - I will ask our office in Al Ram to meet the mufti to express that Norway is opposed to the statements he made during the ceremony. Totally unacceptable Høybråten maintains that the Mufti’s statements, whether quotes or anything else, are totally unacceptable. - These statements are made by the leadership, from quarters where one would expect a more responsible attitude, and they were made as an intrinsic part of a celebration in favor of the ruling party. This makes it imperative that Norway clearly marks our position. - So I am pleased that the Foreign Minister will take this very seriously and that he has [...]

Lifted from Vårt Land Jews do not dare join Jewish communities The Jewish community in Norway has shrunk by nearly a fifth in ten years. Fear of making themselves visible as a Jew, is one of the reasons, the leader of the Jewish Congregation in Oslo, Ervin Kohn believes. by: Geir Ole Bjartvik Figures from Statistics Norway show that the number of members for the two Jewish congregations in Norway has decreased from 1,015 to 819 members over the past decade. This corresponds to a decrease of almost 20 percent. According to Ervin Kohn, Chairman and Trustee of the Jewish community in Oslo, this decline is due to a mix of different factors: Some members have moved from Norway. Some marry out of the congregations. The Member Register has undergone a clean-up. Members pass away. - As we do not proselytize, we do not have this avenue for growth. Fear visibility. Kohn says that the fear of making themselves visible as Jews, keep some from joining. Others drop their membership because they think it’s too scary to be registered as a member of the Jewish minority. - I just spoke with one person in Stavanger, who said that the desire to keep a low profile was the main reason for not becoming a member, says Kohn. He says [...]

NORWEGIAN ISRAEL SOLDIER: MY FIRST WAR IS APPROACHING Verdens Gang 2012 01 16 Erlend Skevik Norwegian Linn Pérez, serving in the Israeli Navy, told friends on Facebook of Israel intending to attack Iran. She is now being disciplined by the IDF. “It is detrimental to have such messages written, able to create misunderstandings in a tense situation”, says Bjorn Hermann, spokesman of the IDF, to VG Net. Relations between Iran and Israel have become very tense in later months. In last week, the IAEA confirmed Iran has implemented high grade enrichment of uranium deep inside a mountain. The West holds fear Iran is employing this program to make nuclear weapons, something being denied by Iran. Reactions by the IDF. During this, the girl from Sandnes wrote this Facebook message: “My first war is approaching… If my summer gets busted, then!” Throughout the last year, this girl from Sandnes has served with the IDF, now being stationed at a naval base in the city of Ashdod. In her field of comments, she writes over her hope Israel shall “take on Iran”. “But Israel shall take on them. Just you wait. This is gonna be trouble”.
This weekend, as part of the 3 year anniversary for the Gaza campaign, the NRK gave the best prime time slot for Saturday night entertainment to medic Mads Gilbert, portraying him as a life saving hero in Tromsø and Gaza, as usual a one-sided, glorification program designed to make Dr. Gilbert look like a saint. However, they jumped the bit where he personally blocked military medics advanced surgery courses, something which would have allowed Norway to have two full surgical teams ready to be dispatched to conflict areas where Norwegian soldiers are deployed – but which we obviously don’t have now! In Sweden, when the Swedish national broadcaster aired Løkkeberg’s now roundly ridiculed Tears of Gaza, the leader of the Swedish Israel Information Center, Liza Abramovicz, filed a formal complaint with The Swedish Broadcasting Commission. According to Abramovicz; I believe the decision to screeing of the film, Tears of Gaza breaches with journalistic ethical principles. According to the SVT spokesperson, the film is an antiwar film, but it only pot rays one side and that is a peculiarly demonizing view. It is a very strong and uncomfortable film, which shows the suffering of the children of Gaza during the Gaza [...]

Aaron Aby Arrah, a Palestinian who had stayed illegally in Norway for four months has been repatriated by force to the West Bank. The newspaper is in outrage over this, as Mr. Arrah was a patient at the AHUS psychiatric ward as he was apprehended, and also over the allegedly low standards of the Trandum detainment center, where Mr. Arrah was incarcerated ahead of being repatriated. According to the newspaper, these conditions are so bad as to be regarded as “torture like conditions” After first being airlifted to Jordan, Mr. Arrah was transported to the West Bank across the Allenby bridge, where he was questioned by the IDF. He is now reported to be in Jenin, and has received the attention of Palestinian security officials, who has asked him to report in order to be interrogated.
It is not only in the Netherlands that prominent people question the failure to apologize to the Jews for deportations and persecution. The former leader of the Jewish Congregation in Oslo, Rolf Kirchner has written an oped (, not online; in translation, to upload soonest) on the matter, but prominent Norwegians such as poet Jan Erik Wold, and writer Aslak Nore have also urged Norway to formally apologize to its Jewish community for persecutions and deportations during WW2. Dutch Urged to Apologize for Jewish Deportations By MIKE CORDER Associated Press Outspoken Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders called on the government Wednesday to apologize for the country’s “passive” response to the mass deportations of Jews by Nazi occupiers during World War II. The move is likely to re-ignite debate about Dutch attitudes to the wartime persecution of the country’s Jewish population. Of the 140,000 Jews who lived in the Netherlands before the war, more than 100,000 were deported and murdered. About 30,000 Jews live here now, out of a total population of nearly 17 million. Wilders is best known for his strident criticism of Islam and also is a strong supporter of Israel. He wrote to Prime Minister Mark Rutte on Wednesday [...]

This story seems determined to grow new legs every day, keeps spinning… out of control NORWAY POLITICIANS CRITICISE “ISRAEL WINE BOYCOTT”. The Foreigner 2011 12 19 Michael Sanderson Vinmonopolet’s site lists two wines available for order, one of them is Golan Heights’ ‘Gamla’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 red. The supposed scarcity has upset Israel’s Friends MPs in Parliament, who fear this could be a conscious move on behalf of the government-run organisation. Some academic environments in Norway have actively encouraged boycotting Israeli goods. Progress’ (FrP) committee leader Jøran Rytman declares, “I only got hold of a bottle [of ‘Gamla’] when I went into Vinmonopolet’s Oslo shop in Thereses gate,” he tells The Foreigner, “3-4 others I phoned said they didn’t have it.” Shop staff The Foreigner spoke with in Stavanger, Norway’s fourth-largest city, located on the west coast, said delivery would take two days. “I take it for granted that Vinmonopolet will treat wine from Israel as from every other country. Otherwise, it will be an act of discrimination,” Hans Olav Syversen, Christian Democratic Party (KrF) MP, writes in an SMS. Like any business, Vinmonopolet is free to buy any wine it chooses. Nevertheless, customers wanting a particular wine only have [...]

It started with the broadside from the Guardian, where the writer tore into Norway’s carefully crafted image as a goodie two shoe; Four years ago, it promised to act as a “peace nation” to support a “more democratic world order” and human rights. Yet socialist-led Norway – still living on its benign image abroad – has instead become the home of four dirty little secrets. And then he listed them up, like ducks in a row; investing money from our Petroleum Fund into companies and countries with the most scant regard for minor topics like human rights, the environment. On oil he observed the following: Even worse is policy on oil. Norway is the world’s third largest exporter of oil and gas, which provide more than a third of government revenues. Last year, when the doubling of world oil prices plunged millions of people in developing countries into poverty, oil revenues boosted government coffers by 17 times the value of Norway’s overseas aid. StatoilHydro, 67% owned by the government, operates in several countries accused of corruption and dire human rights records, such as Azerbaijan, Angola, Iran and Nigeria, and is eyeing up Iraq. Ministers have been speaking openly about reorienting Norwegian diplomacy to [...]

With this act, Norway is drawing closer to the end of the limb where good relations fall off. We may also suggest to the new director (who, to be accurate, has had no involvement with this decision, he was only appointed this week) for the Cultural Council, Yngve Slettholm, that he familiarizes himself with the EU’s working definition of anti-Semitism. He may see that Sande’s book grossly falls within the scope of these definitions. from Vårt Land Israel is furious over support for Norwegian book for children The Israeli Embassy reacted strongly to the Arts Council has purchased a children’s book by author Hans Sande where Israeli soldiers are portrayed in a bad light. Ambassador Michael Eligal has expressed his frustration in a letter to the Minister of Culture Anniken Huitfeldt (AP), according to Dagens Næringsliv. “The way Israel and its soldiers, a friendly country and a friendly army, are presented in a book for young children, is terrible,” said the letter. Eligal react especially on the book ”Daddy’s pirate” depicts Israeli soldiers as alcoholics. In addition, the reader allegedly gets the impression that Israel denies Palestinians water. The Cultural Council of procurement means that the book is distributed to Norwegian libraries. Eligal suggests that this government support can have consequences for the cooperation between Norway and Israel. The Ministry of Culture promises that the letter will be answered next week. linkscolor = "000000"; highlightscolor = "888888"; backgroundcolor = "FFFFFF"; channel = "none";
