Once more, we gather under our flag to celebrate our freedom. Each 17th of May, the Jewish community in Oslo organize a formal and serene commemoration of Henrik Wergeland, the son of one of the member of the Constituent Assembly for our Constitution. In its original version, our Constitution was shamed by the exclusion of Jews and Jesuits in Norway, something Henrik Wergeland fought tirelessly to overturn. His had work was crowned with success in 1851, 6 years after his death. The Jewish community erected a memorial soon after his death, in deep gratitude over his tireless struggle for human as well as civic rights and freedom. This year, after the gruesome events of 22 of July, let us just rejoice in the childlike simplicity and heartfelt joy Henrik Wergeland also inspired us – our unique way of celebrating our Constitution Day – with children armed with flags symbolizing the strong faith we have in liberal values such as personal freedom and tolerance. linkscolor = "000000"; highlightscolor = "888888"; backgroundcolor = "FFFFFF"; channel = "none";

The synagogue in Oslo – already one of the most fortified structures in Norway – applied to the government for additional funds to secure its congregation. They asked for NOK 21 million but got NOK 7 million. After all the speeches Støre and Stoltenberg with no end to the flowery assurances, this is what it comes down to: Jews should be content feeling pretty safe. Norway’s national budget is running enormous surpluses, but we can’t afford to keep Jews safe when they attend religious services or community events. The supposed reason? It’s the landlord’s responsibility to secure its buildings. In this case a congregation of just over 1000 souls. The alternative would be to shut down. It is impossible to know where the NOK 21 million came from, or what the NOK 7 million will accomplish. What threats the synagogue faces is partly unknowable, partly a secret. Likewise is it difficult to know what vulnerabilities remain with the NOK 14 million shortfall. Faremo throws the synagogue a rubber bone, though: a consultation with PST, the wingclipped Norwegian “security police.” Which is probably worth as much as the coffee offered to these cops after the synagogue (we hope) has had a [...]

The Government proposes in the revised national budget to allocate 7.2 million forsecurity at the Jewish Religious Community (DMT). - No one should have to be afraid to exercise their religion in Norway, Justice Minister Grete Faremo says.
Aftenposten today published an op-ed from “Daniel,” a 17-year old Norwegian student who happens to be Jewish. He feels surrounded by antisemitic attitudes, ranging from comments by a fellow video game player (“just pretend they’re Jews when you aim at them”), to the inevitable “so you support killing babies?” when he mentions he supports Israel, to the inability of his teachers to do anything – anything at all – about the use of “Jew” in classroom settings in the same way as “fuck.” What do you figure are the chances this young man will stay in Norway when he grows up? I am sure everyone – absolutely everyone – will gasp in horror at this letter. It will be “sad,” “unacceptable,” etc. A few will say this publicly, and many will say it in public: Israel must take at least some of the blame, being such an awful country and all that. In other words, Israel should recognize its responsibility for Jews worldwide, and stop defending itself do less of whatever it is that pisses people off. Now the people who say these things will readily concede that the 17-year old can’t be held responsible for Israel’s (real and imagined) [...]

By Conrad Myrland
Published: 16/05/2012, at. 9:18 am, Updated: 16/05/2012 at. 12:28 pm - The fact that MIFFs police complaint was publicly known in advance gave positive results and contributed low participation in the action, says a source. On the organizations Facebook about 70 participants had registered as attending, while more than 30 people had said “maybe”. The actual number of participants was about 10 people .
- The protesters caused some minor vandalism, which will be reported, says the source.
Odd Karsten Tveit wins the Gullruten lifetime award for his propaganda news coverage from the Middle East. When it comes to correspondents in the Middle East sent by NRK (the governmental broadcasting organization financed by a surcharge on owning a television), it’s a bit like watching the Eurovision song contest: you can endlessly discuss who is worse. But listening to (Odd) Karsten Tveit is an experience on its own, because this is a guy who has long since come to the conclusion that verifiable facts matter far less than his interpretation of them. It would be accurate to say that he’s a mouthpiece for the rejectionist wing of Fatah, but it would be an incomplete characterization. He’s too glib, too self-righteous, and too overconfident to be the kind of spokesperson who puts up a brave front. He’s oblivious to the fact that human events are full of uncertainty. The only excuse for giving him any kind of award but a pink slip is that the pickings are slim. There are excellent Norwegian journalists, of course, but only a few. And those who are good are largely craftsmen, plying their trade by putting news first, their own faces second. But like [...]

SIX IN TEN JOURNALISTS VOTE LEFTIST TV2 Nyhetene 2012 05 10, No stated author Summary. Political views of Norwegian journalists have been polled, shows clear left wing slant. Leftist fringe party “Reds”, with no mandates in the Storting would have 13 mandates if only journalists had voting rights; Progressives (in real life having 41 mandates) would receive none.
ISRAELI UNION, OVER WHAT? Aftenposten 2012 05 11, Kjell Dragnes Divisions. The heat has been turned up yet one more notch in what is usually a hot-tempered political debate. Opinions are divided as what the purpose of the recent Center-Right coalition really is. Israeli politicians are not known over using kid gloves when referring to opponents and their policies. The newly created government, endorsed by the Knesset on Wednesday is no exception. Verbal attacks on PM Benjamin Netanyahu of the Conservative Likud have flourished; and even more attacks have been launched at Shaul Mofaz of Centrist Kadima. “Mofaz has sold his soul to the devil”, Benjamin Ben Eliezer of the Labor party thundered. The leader of left wing Meretz, Zahava Gal On, attacked both. Her representation of Mofaz’ Kadima: “A rotten apple”. Such statements are telling something about just how controversial the new grand coalition between these political opponents is; however, it also reflects on the fundamental uncertainties over to what is its purpose. External and internal. Is this a preparation to an Israeli attack on the Iranian’s nuclear facilities? Is it an attempt to meet the Palestinians over a deadlocked conflict? Are internal political issues, like the disputed settlements [...]

The mind boggles. Does His Excellency really think that newspaper readers around the world suffer from some massive reading comprehension deficit, or is he just trying to take the mickey? Whereas I too, am proud of my country, and sincerely believe that the anti-Israeli sentiments expressed by our political echelons (as well as a few mad professors) Only days after the ADL lambasted our PM for his participation in May Day events which featured vile anti-Israeli sentiments, and after minister Kristin Halvorsen responded with self-righteous fury in stead of arguments when confronted with claims that the the political Left in Norway passively accepts anti-Semitism skimpily dressed up as anti-Israelism, and at a time when it is wonderfully easy to refute his claims, simply by providing references to actions and words by our own ministers and political advisors in the current government or other representatives of our political and intellectual elites. A small sample: Our FM lies about extensive contacts with Hamas, also refusing to label it a terror organization Extensive funding of Palestinian organizations that glorify terrorism and spreads anti-semitism Our PM calling Gilbert and Fosse as they were shielding Hamas operatives within the Sheba hospital in 2009, to let [...]

Norwegians are so damn touchy. Svein Sevje, the Norwegian ambassador to Israel’s largest city (the Norwegian government knows better than the Israeli people where Israel should have its capital), presents a litany of complaints to the Jerusalem Post. He complains bitterly that the Post “persists in regularly publishing strongly anti-Norwegian articles.” He thinks it is unfair when contributors to the Post confuse the Norwegian government with the Norwegian people, and takes pains to point out how insulting it is when people who write in the Post compare the Norwegian government to Nazis. Ouch. One can scarcely imagine how that must feel for the ambassador. His chief complaint, though, is a number of inaccuracies in one particular op-ed by Michael Sharnoff. Sevje gets unlimited column space in the Post to correct the record. Which he does, after a fashion: Here are his “facts” Even a brief glance at the website of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs shows that Norway’s commitment to human rights, democracy and peace is worldwide, not confined to one country or part of the world. This is no naive it beggars belief. A brief glance at any foreign ministry’s website would give you that impression. It is [...]

Ignorance is Bliss in Norway Bell Martin Breivik is a horrible criminal. His trial sofar has not only provided information on his misdeeds As a byproduct the reactions to it have helped illustrate some characteristics of Norwegian society. The lack of self criticism and freedom of speech for true critical debate are two major shortcomings. To a certain extent the notion of “debate” has been misunderstood in Norway; the cultural elite silence those with ‘out of the ordinary opinions’ and label them as “extreme”. Someone like Hanne Nabintu Herland is considered “extreme” because she has a different view. I recently watched a debate where she claimed it would have been better if Breivik had been killed on the spot; the replies were harsh and the host only gave her one minute to reply. Yet everyone else had had ample time to summarize the court case rather than debate it. No one agreed with her opinion and they therefore did not want to spend time on it. This is what they misunderstood; this is a basis for great debate. Another issue which is affected by this attitude is the debate on the Arab Israeli conflict. There is little room in Norwegian [...]
