Professor in social psychology Arnulf Kolstad at NTNU has a very peculiar take on anti-semitism, here from an interview with the NRK from April last year regarding the leader of the Jewish community in Trondheim public complaint that the word ‘Jew’ is used as an expletive, and that Jewish school children in Trondheim are being bullied for their faith: It is natural that Israel can be viewed in a negative light in an educational setting, but it is important for teachers to teach children that there is a difference between the state of Israel, and Jews as a people. [......] He has therefore no problem understanding the frustration felt by Jewish parents when the word Jew is used as an expletive. The professor then discusses the relative innocence of children using “Jew” as an expletive, saying that he does not think that small kids understand or relate to the anti-semitic significance of “Jew” (to give you an idea of the derogatory meaning it has in common Norwegian parlance, compare it to ‘kike’ prof. M.mcG), but when kids start using the term as an expletive, it will have a contagious effect, but it is not thereby a given that it is [...]

It is against official policy to boycott Israel. Yet 10 percent of Norwegians say they already have initiated a personal boycott of Israel, two boroughs in Oslo have declared a boycott of Israel, dockers have blockaded Israeli ships, and recently the armed forces college chose to cancel a seminar in order to avoid having to let an Israeli officer speak. Now it has come to light that the Minister of Defence Grete Faremo, refuses to accept bids from Israeli companies. Vårt Land reports in the article “Faremo boycotted Israel“: The armed forces are to purchase new combat helmets for its soldiers, and several companies in Israel have received notice that they will not be allowed to partake in the tender. On Israeli supplier has received the following explanation: “The Ministry of Defence has considered the case, and arrived at the decision that Rebinex is not to partake in the tender. The decision has been made on the grounds of the extraordinary situation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict” department director Per A. Christiansen in the Ministry of Defence wrote in a letter of March 9th last year. Minister of Defence Grete Faremo herself confirms to VG that Israeli suppliers have been rejected [...]

FM Støre recently poo-pooed Israeli criticism over Norwegian hostility. Aftenposten has so far refused to comment on JP’s allegation of the newspaper being “viciously anti-Israel”. Many feel that Israel is merely especially sensitive to well-mean criticism. Today TV2 news informs – with an NTB article – us that Rector Sigmund Grønmo of Bergen University is “not ruling out” a boycott of Israel. Unauthorized translation from TV2: – Academic boycott of Israel is at present not viable, but is the subject of debate here at UiB, says UiB -rector Sigmund Grønmo to the University newspaper “On top”. It was during a debate in the Student’s society that Grønmo made clear UiB’s view on an academic boycott of Israel. But management has no plans of furthering such a proposal, any initiative must in such a case come from the staff, says Grønmo. Employees at NTNU in Trondheim proposed a boycott last year, but the board said no. At the time the minister of Research and higher education distanced herself from a university boycott. During the debate Grønmo said that he disagreed with the minister. – The minister cannot impose a stand upon the universities, he said. It is clear to everyone that [...]

Most Norwegians are decent people who do not go looking for trouble. We do however get led astray sometimes. At NTNU a very vocal, well-organized group of Israel-critics have been working hard for a long time in order to bring about an academic boycott of Israel. They have called for a boycott and organized a top-tier seminar series on Israel where the speakers were characterized by Haaretz as being an all-star team of Israel-haters. Now, on November 12th, NTNU’s board will have to decide whether or not to act on the call to boycott. Make no mistake, this will be no pushover. A strong anti-Israel lobby has demonized and criticized Israel for a long time, and there are many intelligent and hardworking people among them. On the 12th, a Norwegian board will have to decide whether a Norwegian university is to boycott the country in the Middle East which scores highest on democracy, women’s rights and freedom of speech – Israel. Now an international community of scholars are saying – enough. Boycott Israel, they state, and we will boycott you. Mark, this is not the Israel-lobby speaking. This is a choir of the voices of decency, and there are many [...]

NTNU is one of Norway’s most prestigious universities. This autumn the university is presenting a series of seminars on the Palestine-Israel conflict where all of the speakers, as well as the members of the organizing committee, are known adherents of the Palestinian narrative. Why is the Israeli narrative not given equal attention? Is Israel so fundamentally evil that her perspective is irrelevant? NTNU rector Torbjørn Digernes says that all speakers at the seminar are required to be objective, and that he as rector stands by the decision to host the seminars. Unauthorized translation from NTNU’s Rector’s Page: One of the universities’ most important tasks in society, is to provide room and opportunity for a free, research based exchange of opinons. We are to provide an accessible pulpit, people shall be allowed to speak and opinions are to be contested. The professional logic behind a research based approach to the conflict in the Middle East, is to be able to communicate and discuss with the researchers who set the agenda for the professional debate. As opposed to the political debate, research builds on documented and transparent analysis and conclusions. It lies in the fundamental ethos of research to contribute to document [...]

Norway’s Finance Minister Kristin Halvorsen (Socialist Left) has ordered oil fund holdings with Israeli companies to be scrutinized, in order to ascertain whether they are in violation with ethical considerations. Upon finding out that the Israeli company Elbit has delivered technology to the separation wall between Israel and Gaza, she kicked Elbit out of the oil fund. From Philosemite: “The officials said that Norway’s decision to divest from Elbit was strange since it was purchasing the US Joint Strike Fighter – also known as the F-35 – which will come equipped with a helmet developed and manufactured by Elbit. Norway has already invested more than $100m. in the JSF program. The helmet, specially designed for JSF manufacturer Lockheed Martin, allows pilots to see all of the plane’s systems and flight data on a heads-up display inside the helmet, without having to look down at a control panel. “It is pretty strange that on the one hand Norway is divesting from the company, but still plans to buy the JSF, which comes with an Elbit-made helmet,” one official said.”" (Norway envoy summoned on divestment) linkscolor = "000000"; highlightscolor = "888888"; backgroundcolor = "FFFFFF"; channel = "none";

The Norwegian Pension Fund is vast. It is placed in holdings throughout the globe. Jerusalem Post now alerts to how Minister of Finance Kristin Halvorsen (Socialist Left) has thrown the Israeli company Elbit out of the Pension Fund. See an unauthorized translation from Norwegian E24 below, here. The reason for the exclusion? The Pension Fund is not to invest in companies which operate in violation of the rulings of the Ethical Guidelines for the Government Pension Fund. The image below shows a page from the holdings of the Pension Fund as of 2007. Here is a more recent listing showing holdings in 2008. Now is this one Israeli company the only one to operate in violation of the Ethics Council? And for what fair reason are Israeli companies scrutinized more than other companies? Recall that as recently as 2005 the Socialst Left’s national meeting voted unanimously in favor of boycott of Israel, a boycott which Ms. Halvorsen has repeatedly endorsed since. Mr. Halvorsen also partook in a demonstration on January 8th where there were calls of “Kill the jews“, even though her party the Socialst Left later denied that such cries were made in a press release. Norway’s ambassador to [...]

Unauthorized translation from E24: Note that the terms oil fund and pension fund are used interchangeably but refer to the same – the Norwegian piggy bank, under this government in the custody of Finance Minister Kristin Halvorsen of the Socialist Left. Throws Israeli company out of the Oil fund The Minister of Finance is excluding an Israeli supplier of surveillance equipment from the Oil fund. The decision of excluding the Israeli company Elbit Systems from the Oil fund is based on advice from the Oil fund Ethics council. The company is delivering a surveillance system which is intended to be a central contribution to Israel’s construction of the separation barrier which runs across occupied territories in Palestine. The Ethics council believes an investment in Elbit carries with it an ”unacceptabel risk of contributing to especially grave violations of fundamental ethical norms”. - Freedom of mobility in the occupied territory has been subjected to unacceptable obstacles. The Haag-court has requested the states which are part of the Geneva convention to counteract this. Norwegian authorities have the same view and support it, says Halvorsen in a comment to the decision.
In some circles there is a conspicious amount of talk about how important it is to boycott, out of all nations on earth, precisely Israel (see Boycott-category). Indeed on May 1st, Israel was the only country to be singled out for criticism by powerful LO (trade union conferderacy) leader Roar Flåthen. It is therefore interesting to see that trade with Israel actually either increases, or decreases disproportionately from that with other nations. “Made in Israel” it appears, is a comforting mark of quality as far as many Norwegian consumers are concerned. Here is a news flash from With Israel for Peace, Norway’s largest pro-Israel organization. Imports from Israel decrease less than imports in general Published: Wednesday July 15th 2009 By Conrad Myrland Aggregate Norwegian imports of goods decreased by 13,5 percent during the first six months of this year. Imports from Israel are only down by 10,7 percent from the first six months of the record year 2008, according to today’s figures from The Norwegian Bureau of Statstics. Since the beginning of this decade several different Norwegian organizations have worked for a boycott of Israel. During the same period of time imports from the jewish state have stablized on a [...]

The photograph above and the article beneath are from an op-ed in the Norwegian daily Dagbladet, written by Sonja Krohn. Krohn argues that “Waltz with Bashir” is, far from being an anti-war movie, actually a piece of pro-Israeli propaganda. —–Excerpt begins—– The Israeli animated movie “Waltz with Bashir” reduces Israel’s trauma, but does not deal with Israel’s Zionist ideology and policy of occupation. The massacres in Gaza have created waves of shock around the world, which the leaders of the west cannot reign, and now an international movement for the boycott of Israel is arising, as it did against South-Africa in order to end the apartheid regime. At the same time the Minister of Culture, Trond Giske, states in Aftenposten on January 8th that he is against a boyctott, and desire to accommodate an expansion of cultural cooperation, “to the extent we can contribute”. Within culture and academia it is most difficult to initiate a boycott, and there is an ongoing ideological battle about this in different fora. Cultural cooperation with the state of Israel has been going on for decades, simulteneously with the ethnic cleansing of Palestine, and we must now raise the question: may this have served as a cover for the occupational advances, rather than an impediment? At the same time [...]

This weeks’ edition of Morgenbladet (February 20-26th) runs a full page article under the title “Boycott Israel. Speed up the dialogue”. Ramson refers to the Israeli film Waltz with Bashir, and finds support for the necessity of a cultural boycott in quotes from Israeli authors and journalists Uri Avnery, Norman Finkelstein and Gideon Levy. The first excerpt below refers to the massacres at Sabra and Chatilla: In 1982 an Israeli commission found Ariel Sharon, then Minster of Defence, indirectly guilty for the massacres. In 2001 he was elected prime minister. To date, our cultural cooperation with Israel has flourished. The same has the criminal settlements, barbed wire, check points, torture of prisoners and murders on civilians. On January 12th, the New York Times writes that surveys show that almost 90 percent of the Israelis supported the war in Gaza (whether Palestinian Arabs participated in the survey is uncertain). Some know-it-alls have claimed that the war also was aimed at the election. What does it say about Israel when the country’s leaders believe [...]

NTB today report that Norway imported goods for NOK 71,3 million in January 2009, an increase of 24,4 percent from January of 2008, according to the Norwegian Bureau of Statistics. Several policians argued for a boycott of goods from Israel after the war on the Gaza-strip in January this year. – I’ll be the first to admit that the call for a boycott of Israel hasn’t been a hit here in Norway, so far, says Parliament representative Bjørn Jacobsen (Socialist Left) to Vårt Land. He still stands by the call for boycott. – We still encourage for a boycott of Israeli goods and ask Norwegian consumers not to select Israeli products when they go shopping. We are not giving up on this issue just because of statistics, says Jacobsen. linkscolor = "000000"; highlightscolor = "888888"; backgroundcolor = "FFFFFF"; channel = "none";
