Israel has sent a letter of complaint to the NRK, pointing out that Israel is consistently being cast in the role as a villain. In the DN article below a spokesman for a PR company -which turned down an offer to work for Israel in Norway – agrees that the media is placing Israel in a very difficult situation. The article “Understanding of Israeli criticism” ran in Dagens Næringsliv today. Journalists: Bjørn Eckblad, Knut Selsjord. Not online. Oslo: Geelmuyden-Kiese recently said no to be Israel ’s PR agency in Norway , due to Amnesty International already being a customer with the agency. Partner and the leading senior councilor, Hans Geelmuyden, points out he is not against representing Israel on principal grounds. He is not acquainted with the Israeli PR strategy; however, Geelmuyden says the complaints concerning NRK must be seen in the light of the country’s history. “To such a degree as I dare speak of foreign policy, I will state much of Israel ’s actions must be seen in the light of the demanding situation the country is in. Such a complaint can easily be explained by paranoia. On the other hand, it is easy to understand a people [...]

Well-reputed Dagens Næringsliv today tells us that Israel is unhappy with the state broadcasting authority NRK, which consistently and predictably casts Israel in a negative light. The article informs us that the embassy of Israel has sent a letter of complaint to the NRK, but feels that this letter has not been taken seriously. It probably hasn’t. There are people up at Marienlyst (NRK main offices in Oslo) who seriously believe that Israel is “similar to” nazi-Germany. For them, a letter of complaint from the Israeli embassy is an endorsement. Professor McGonagall of this site has previously suggested that it is the Norwegian public who ought to take action, and that we ought to do so not with a letter of complaint but by taking NRK to court. In order to carry out something like this we need legal counsel and money. If you are in a position to offer assistance or advice, please contact us. Things are not going to improve by themselves. The article “Israel reprimands state broadcaster” is not online yet. Journalists are Bjørn Eckblad and Knut Selsjord.
On Wednesday this site glumly predicted that the anniversary of the Syrian army’s massacre at Hama would go unobserved by the Norwegian media. Today’s editorial in Dagens Næringsliv is on… how the massacres of Sabra and Shatila are well known while the massacre at Hama is virtually forgotten. The editorial is written by Kjetil Wiedswang, who is perhaps one of the three Norwegian journalists who know enough about Hama to write about it. Wiedswang actually wrote about Hama in July in 2009 too, when he suggested that Cast Lead was “almost” like Hama. Today he points out that the massacres of Sabra and Shatilla, which are associated with Israel, are well known. Meanwhile, Wiedswang observes, Syria’s massacre at Hama is all but forgotten. Understanding how this reflects a double standard, Wiedswang suggests, is crucial to understanding Israeli grumpiness and paranoia. It is highly commendable of Wiedswang to point out what in a better world be perfectly obvious to everyone – that remembering Sabra and Shatilla while forgetting Hama is part of a pattern where Israel is singled out for special treatment for events which go unobserved when they occur in her neighboring states. It is less commendable of Wiedswang to [...]

In Norway, the only democracy in the Middle East is routinely lambasted for actions that go without mention when they occur elsewhere. The Palestinian narrative is as popular as the Israeli narrative is ignored. Now Dagens Næringsliv tells us that Norwegian PR firms will not take Israeli money. Unauthorized translation from Dagens Næringsliv below. Notice how the newspaper mentions the parliamentary group “Friends of Israel” which totals 27 members among the opposition, while making no mention of the “Friends of Palestine”, which is backed by government and completely outguns and outnumbers the former. Blames this on unconscious fear ”I did not believe those agencies shared one hundred percent the views of their employers”, says the leader of friends of Israel in the Storting, Hans Olav Syversen (Christian Democrats). “Probably, some unconscious fear of reactions by other customers who will not employ them”, Syversen says. He says this is symptomatic of the climate Israel is met with in Norway. “Press coverage of Israel is biased. There is depressingly little talk of Israel as a dynamic and modern society, leading in technology, science and culture, says Hans Olav Syversen. The Friends of Israel at the Storting counts 27 members. The Member of [...]

The Norwegian establishment will not allow Israel the right to fight against Hamas, except in no-mans land. They will not allow Israel to blockade of Hamas, which has vowed to annihilate Israel. They will propagandize against Israel, but they will not allow Israel’s embassy to maintain a security fence against the attacks which this propaganda incites. Now Israel, seeking to repair the damage the mass media has done to her reputation, has sought the advice of Norwegian PR firms. The PR firms refuse to assist her. The front page of well-reputed Dagens Næringsliv today reads: Norwegian companies slam doors. PR-NO TO ISRAEL” (see above). See below for an unauthorized translation of the article: Closed doors: The State of Israel wants to hire PR-agencies; Norwegian communications people refute this. Fears over reactions: “Israel is an extremely controversial project, says Sigurd Grytten of Burson-Marsteller. Israeli FM Avigdor Liberman has a wish to hire PR-agencies in ten European countries in order to improve the reputation of the country, Israel’s major newspaper reports.
Norway is doing well. Jeffrey Sachs is warning us not to let our successes go to our heads. Dagens Næringsliv published two pages on Sachs’ warnings yesterday (Saturday January 29th). Sachs points out that Norway is not immune to the following: 1) Corruption: when money enters politics it displaces the public debate 2) Immigration: Norway has been a homogenous society for a long time, but immigration is changing Norway 3) Unipolar politics: Rather than being dominated by the extremes, Norway appears to have succeeded in anchoring politics in a rational centre 4) Economic risk: Norway has done well so far but this is a wild, wild world. All in all this is pretty generic stuff. Which stands to reason, Sachs is a man with many qualities but it is unlikely that he had the time to develop any indepth knowledge on Norway. It’s not that his advice is bad, it’s just that it is pretty vague. Still useful. This weeks’ edition of the Economist (January 29-February 4th) offers an intersting article titled “A waxing cresecent” on Islam and demography. The article points out that Europe’s Muslims will grow from 6% today to 8% in 2030, and suggests that this is [...]

Dagens Næringsliv is primarily a business newspaper but its journalists are generally a cut above the rest. To put it this way, a DN journalist who reads Ilan Pappe and Norman Finkelstein will also read Benny Morris and Alan Dershowitz. In today’s editorial Kjetil Wiedswang, who just might bear a grudge against this site for an old fracas, identifies Gaza’s problem as so: too many people benefit from status quo for it to change. Wiedswang proceeds to tell us how this is the case. BRAVO Wiedswang BRAVO. Wiedswang then tells us that Gaza fell to Egypt “after WWII” which is nonsense, it fell to Egypt after the 1948 war which Wiedswang mentions in the very next paragraph. Wiedswang also manages, while comparing the naqba to other refugee waves, to avoid mentioning the Jewish refugees who were driven away from Muslim lands. LESS BRAVO Wiedswang, LESS BRAVO. But still good. Another DN man who does his paper proud today is Bjørn Gabrielsen, who very correctly points out that authors Erlend Loe and Henning Mankell are hardly the first Scandinavian intellectuals to, in their mistaken belief of doing good, become pawns of totalitarian movements. Well done, Gabrielsen. Gabrielsen then mars his own [...]

With radical one does not mean standing to the left of Labor, but that one is in favor of violence as a tool in order to further political gain. - The threat of terror has the highest priority with us, as in all of Europe. We see that there are groups in Europe which are clearly radicalized. There are groups which assist foreigners by financing terrorist activities. We have not had any impact in Norway yet. That does not mean we are forgotten. She pronounces the last sentence slowly, contemplatively and with a sombre emphasis on the word forgotten. - The war on terror has just begun. Unfortunately.
In the last week of October journalist Kjetil Wiedswang in the prestigious business daily Dagens Næringsliv commented on the strained aspects of Norway-Israeli relations . In doing so he unfortunately relied upon “chinese whispers” about Israeli academic Manfred Gerstenfeld, including a misquote which has been bandied about by both the Norwegian and Swedish News Agencies (NTB and TT) ever since Mr.Gerstenfeld made the mistake of participating in an interview with Norwegian TV2. Mr.Wiedswang is an intelligent man who writes well, but he made the mistake of relying on his colleagues in the Norwegian journalistic corps to provide him with the correct information – at which they failed. Upon reading a translation of Mr. Wiedswang’s article Mr.Gerstenfeld wrote a letter to Dagens Næringsliv alerting to the mistake, and the newspaper – one of Norway’s finest – did the right thing and published it. False Quote on Anti-Semitism Manfred Gerstenfeld Kjetil Wiedswang states wrongly that I consider Norway “the most anti-Semitic nation in Europe.”[1] To be fair: not he, but TV2 invented this fake quotation and NTB spread it widely. This bogus passage was even mentioned in a parliamentary question to Foreign Minister Stoere. It is absurd to define a country as [...]

(Originally published on October 27th – republished on request on November 5th) Mr.Kjetil Wiedswang is no fool. A prominent and respected Norwegian journalist in the employ of Dagens Næringsliv, a well-reputed business daily, he can often seize the attention of the country’s elites (read more by Mr.Wiedswang here and here). On October 24th this weekend he alerted his readers to the steady detoriation of Norway-Israel relations with this article. This is commendable indeed – there is no reason for Norway to have strained relationships with any nation, least of all the one nation in the Middle East which scores highest on democratic traits such as freedom of expression and women’s rights. How on earth the Norwegian government has managed to do so, many citizens would like to know. The intention behind the article is praiseworthy, and there can be no doubt that Mr.Wiedswang wields one of Norway’s sharper pens. Sadly,in this article the good journalist stumbles over some erroneous facts and makes unverifiable allegations regarding jewish and Israeli paranoia, although he does manage to end up pointing vaguely in the right directions – at the prejudices of his readers. Unauthorized translation below: Even paranoid Israelis may be under persecution. If [...]

Despite this unfortunate affair, DN remains one of Norway’s finest newspapers and Mr.Wiedswang one of our sharpest journalists. The only mistake Mr.Wiedswang made was to believe the information provided to him by his colleagues. In the climate offered by the Norwegian debate on the Middle East, this is not advisable. Below; letter from Manfred Gerstenfeld of the JCPA to Dagens Næringsliv, Norway’s leading business daily (and the finest newspaper in Norway), printed in the paper edition on November 5th: False Quote on Anti-Semitism Manfred Gerstenfeld Kjetil Wiedswang states wrongly that I consider Norway “the most anti-Semitic nation in Europe.”[1] To be fair: not he, but TV2 invented this fake quotation and NTB spread it widely. This bogus passage was even mentioned in a parliamentary question to Foreign Minister Stoere. It is absurd to define a country as the most anti-semitic in Europe as no accurate measurements for this exist. The history of this false citation, attributed to me, is a small illustration of how some key actors in the Norwegian media world distort information and lack professionalism. My book Behind the Humanitarian Mask, the Nordic Countries Israel and the Jews, mentions many examples of recent pioneering acts of [...]

Saturday July 4th, 2009. Journalist Kjetil Wiedswang writes the commentary “Obama’s first war” in Dagens Næringsliv, Norway’s largest business newspaper. Wiedswang claims that there are two basic strategies for defeating a wellequipped and motivated guerilla army; the al-Assad way and the Briggs way. The first and most widely used strategy consits of using raw and unrestricted violence. It was demonstrated by Syria’s president Hafez Al-Assad in 1982, when the regime was almost toppled by The Muslim Brotherhood. Al-Assad sent the army to the city of Hama, the centre for the rebels – and used heavy artillery to level it. Between 10 000 and 25 000 dead, including women and children. The mosque, which was the Brotherhood’s symbolic headquarter in the city, was torn down and the site made into a parking lot. The military leaders of the murders where decorated and promoted. After this the rebels lost their taste for battle. The Al-Assad method has been used, on an irregular basis, since the roman slave rebellion under Spartacus suffered defeat in B.C.71 and 6 600 of his followers were crucified along Via Appia. Stalin used it, Hitler used i, and a pack of dictators in Latin-America have used it. The problem is that is has to be carried out really [...]

Norway’s leading business newspaper Dagens Næringsliv runs a two-page interview with the new leader for the Committee for Palestine, Mrs.Line Khateeb. The interview is titled “Lady of peace” and is a cordial affair where Mrs. Khateeb expresses concern over the high level of traffic accidents in Israel, which she attributes to the high level of anxiety which Isrealis suffer from as a consequence of their occupation of Palestinian land. It is a fact that Israel has traditionally held lower levels of traffic mortality then her neighbors, but let’s give Mrs. Khateeb the benefit of doubt in this case. Some of Line Khateeb’s statements: “Everyone respects eachother in Palestine. Christians and Moslems in the same village visit each other and congratulate each other on ceremonial occasions and holidays.” When asked whether Hamas has as it’s goal to annihilate Israel, Khateeb answeres: “I don’t really think this is Hamas’ goal. They have nothing to benefit from this. It was written in their charter of 1988 during the first intifadah. But Hamas’ statements today indicated that they recognize the existence of Israel.”  Note: The Committee for Palestine invited representatives from Hamas to Norway in 2006. linkscolor = "000000"; highlightscolor = "888888"; backgroundcolor = "FFFFFF"; channel = "none";
